Not sure about the clean install - I did a direct upgrade and it worked just fine. The installation will automatically convert your startup drive to APFS, leaving the others untouched. You can...

You mean potentially downgrading to Sierra for example? Not a problem at all. I've had the new boot ROM for a while now (MP51.0089.B00) and reverted back to Sierra without any trouble. I am now back...
