I'll just comment quickly on the windows sounds thing (aplogies if you already know some of this)

I just use my motherboard's onboard sound for all my Windows Sounds (media player, TV card etc)...

One thing I have thought of doing (but haven't got 'round to it yet) is to use a load box or attenuator with a line level out. Run the line out straight into your recording chain...

check that the little led on the front of the mbox is on Instrument. Not Mic or Line.

check you haven't mixed up inputs 1 and 2 with their respective controls.
