I had the same issue. I had 512 mb RAM installed, and when I added 256 more it worked fine. For some reason going to 6.4 had a large effect on my playback and record. It was great with 6.1 with 512.

I put in another 256MB of RAM and that made a trmendous difference. Its performing great now. Thanks again for all the answers. This was driving me nuts!!!
