Re: Mixer to use for Mixing Down to my mBox

I would choose a Mackie over the Soundcraft Spirit anyday. I prefer the layout, and the pres in the VLZ-Pro series are underrated (even better if you go direct out:)

Re: subjective: which External FireWire HD is best

Buy a good drive and an enclosure, save some money. Added bonus, flipping a dying drive into an enclosure can get you another boot. Saved my bacon last year:)

Re: Recording acoustic guitar

only when the acoustic is part of full band mix (ie you'd never do that if recording solo guitar, set at 100Hz is already starting to cut into the room sound)

there's usually not a compelling...

Re: 002 vs octopre pre-amps: comments

forget the low end focusrite crap...go with the Cranesong Spider! It's a lot more money, but heck you'll be trading in the Octapre in 2 years to get something better, so take the plunge now, get...

Re: $1600 to upgrade my LE studio. Please help guy

Do the right thing, with the 001 converters you won't ever sound pro. it's a crucial link in the chain, do some reading and find out. (I strongly recommend The Art of Digital Audio by Watkinson)

Re: $1600 to upgrade my LE studio. Please help guy

Mytek Stereo96 $1000 2 chanel AD
AKG C414

$1600

Presto. Solid front end with no weak link.

I don't know [bleep] all about voice overs, but for sure you can pick a decent mic for that money...

Re: $1600 to upgrade my LE studio. Please help guy

Peneslapepe - not to be harsh or anything, but I think you're missing something.

Holy trinity of digital recording:
1. mic
2. pre
3. conversion

You have a good pre. You have a [bleep] mic...

Re: $1600 to upgrade my LE studio. Please help guy

He's got a really decent preamp. I still say the weak link is that mic. I mean putting that mike with $1600 preamp doesn't make a hell of a lot of sense to my mind.

Re: $1600 to upgrade my LE studio. Please help guy

I'd say your first priority would be to upgrade that mic (your current pre should totally outclass it)

Muzza,

The G5 has a optical digital in/out, so customizing your front end one piece at a time could be a really good way to go (especially if you only need 2 channels).

There are tons of...

Re: Clipping at A/D shows up on master fader?

even peaking at -3db through the 001 can give you clipping at the converter. i try to peak MAX -5db when using the 001. Love to hear what other people do.

Re: Recommended Firewire Drives

buy a good disk (7200rpm, 8Mb cache) and an enclosure. They work great and you'll save money.
