Re: Best Desktops for PTLE

That's the one... Looks like the price has dropped again! That's a great deal, currently, at newegg.

Re: Best Desktops for PTLE

OCZ Platinum revision 2 will OC clock very nicely with that board. Sometimes the price drops below $200 for a 2x512 kit.

Re: Allenstein machines et al with 24/96

I've done 24+ tracks of 24/96 on a variant of the higher-end Allenstein system, but not using Protools LE software (so I can't tell you if there's anything protools specific that's problematic). No...

Re: Best Desktops for PTLE

For portability, I've had good luck with Bytecc 740U2F external firewire/usb2 enclosures and the Hitachi Deskstar 250gb IDE hard drives. They're fanless and quiet - the enclosures are only $45 at...

Re: Best Desktops for PTLE

1) There is a fix for SP2 posted on the first page of this thread. It sounds like you haven't run that yet - try it out.

2) Also, make sure the digi 001 isn't plugged into one of the PCI-E/PCI-X...

Re: Best Desktops for PTLE

512 mb sticks are the best with Athlon XP series processors. 2 sticks is ideal - when you go to three sticks, you drop from DDR 400 to a lower memory speed. Likewise, 1gb sticks are slower than the...

Re: Best Desktops for PTLE

The zalman 7000b-cu is quite a bit heavier than the 7000b-alcu. I'd go for the aluminum-copper hybrid, since it cools just as much while lessening the risk of cracking the motherboard if you need to...

Re: Best Desktops for PTLE

I would think a 3200 would be more-than-fine. I've gotten great results from a 2500+ Barton when building a "previous incarnation" of the Allenstein machine - heck, I'm still working with that...

Re: Allenstein Dream Machine !?!

Depends on the size of the fans - if they are 60mm, that will explain the loudness. It's essentially impossible to have a quiet fan smaller than 80m, and 120mm is preferred for low noise.

Sounds...

Re: RAM issues - A7V600-X, A7V880 & K8 Platforms

Not at DDR 400, though. You'll lose a lot of memory speed with 4 chips, unless you have a stepping E (I think... someone correct me if I'm wrong!)

You actually do get 3gb capacity on the 754 mobos...

Re: RAM issues - A7V600-X, A7V880 & K8 Platforms

You can go over 1gb of ram on socket 754 motherboards depending what revision AMD chip you have. The memory controller is supposed to be upgraded on the "series E" chips (becoming available as we...

Re: Best Desktops for PTLE

If you want quiet you want the smallest amount of heat generation from the components so that you need fewer fans running. Mobile Athlon chips use lower watts, making them good contenders. Fanless...

Re: Best Desktops for PTLE help help help

DFI just released a BIOS update for that board for the upcoming Turion Athlon 64 mobile processors. They run at such low wattages (25-35) with the same processing power, it makes them real good...

Re: Best Desktops for PTLE

I was under the impression that a few more 754-compatible chips would be rolling out through the year... I think Allen's reasoning (as he's stated it before) is that by the time you want to replace...

Re: Best Desktops for PTLE

P4s have been problematic with Pro Tools LE (and other programs as well). I think that's why they're not listed as configurations in the first thread.

It's all AMD around these parts...

Re: Best Desktops for PTLE

Alternatively, see if you can find Antec brand cases... I have an Antec Sonata for my Allenstein machine and have seen a K8V fit smoothly in other Antec case models. Very well laid out, nice extra...

Re: Best Desktops for PTLE

I'd add to this: see if you can find an XP2500+ which is "unlocked." AMD is now shipping factory-locked processors in their Barton line, meaning that they can't run at higher frequency multipliers...

Re: Best System for PTLE for under $1000.00

I was wondering if anyone had any experience with these AMD/ Asus systems (in my case, barton 2500+ and Asus A7V8x deluxe mobo) with both a Digi 001 and other audio cards (we're thinking about the...
