You might try an Oktava MK 319. I use it for voiceovers, but I heard someone demo it for vocals at guitar center. Sounded pretty good, and it's in your price range.

Sometimes you have to wait a minute before the mac finds the hard drive. Try giving it a few minutes with your original drive hooked up, and see if the blinking "where the heck is the hd" icon goes...
