changing the size of the tracks (mini, small, medium) did not do anything...

in Sound Forge there is a Volume adjuster, often times i bump it to 125%, i then compress and EQ and can come up...

yep, i think you need to bounce a stereo interleaved file at 16 bit...then you will have one .wav file that Nero and other programs can handle
