Re: Interfaces considered a "step up" from the Avid I|O?

I can only speak to the Avid HD vs. Prism Titan but there was an appreciable improvement moving to the latter. More detail and presence. I don't think one is more or less balanced -- both seem to...

Re: Interfaces considered a "step up" from the Avid I|O?

The Titan arrived and is installed and sounding superb. I'm sure there were several strong choices I could have made but this feels like the best for me. The very first recording (a vocal) made my...

Re: Interfaces considered a "step up" from the Avid I|O?

Re: Interfaces considered a "step up" from the Avid I|O?

As I'd mentioned above, I think the Avid HD converters are very good (Ferraris), and there's nothing wrong with them per se, but I've heard better (Bugattis?) and wanted to explore any areas where I...

Re: Interfaces considered a "step up" from the Avid I|O?

After a tireless search, I ended up purchasing an Atlas. This can become the new Master (via Digilink) and the existing Avid HD can clock to it and be used for add'l ins/outs. It's more than I'd...

Re: Interfaces considered a "step up" from the Avid I|O?

Anyone familiar with the Prism Titan?

Re: Interfaces considered a "step up" from the Avid I|O?

Jan from DAD had some interesting things to say about the difference(s) between the MTRX and the MTRX Studio. It was copied here -- some of you may have seen it. In a nutshell, he was suggesting that...

Re: Interfaces considered a "step up" from the Avid I|O?

Any time I'm close to pulling the trigger I find a shortcoming. There are several great sounding A/Ds but any scenario, so far, is just not quite right. I have some complex monitoring paths that I...

Re: Interfaces considered a "step up" from the Avid I|O?

One of the guys I was talking to uses an RME and he swears by it. And also mentioned Totalmix as a plus.

Re: Interfaces considered a "step up" from the Avid I|O?

I've been talking to a couple people today -- all of them are happy having gotten rid of their HD Native Thunderbolt boxes and prefer their new interfaces. Seems that I need to get rid of my (hard to...

Re: Interfaces considered a "step up" from the Avid I|O?

Oh lord... I wouldn't buy a mousepad from Antelope. They make such amazing hardware but lack the technical savvy to support it. It's a shame, really, but that's how it has been for many years and if...

Re: Interfaces considered a "step up" from the Avid I|O?

The guys I've talked to about Black Lion/Avid HD I|Os weren't endorsers, just regular folks. I trust that their opinions are honest, but I can't say that their opinions would match mine. I'd have to...

Re: Interfaces considered a "step up" from the Avid I|O?

This is for my home studio so I wouldn't need more than 64.

Would the Red 16 be considered a sonic upgrade over the Avid HD I|O? I have no experience whatsoever with the Focusrite.

Re: Interfaces considered a "step up" from the Avid I|O?

MTRX options start at $5k, which isn't making sense at the moment. I can upgrade the current Avid I|O via the Black Lion mods for $2K. I'm not seeing evidence that the MTRX would sound better, though...

Re: Interfaces considered a "step up" from the Avid I|O?

Thanks for clearing that up James!

Though a former DSP loyalist, today (and in the foreseeable future) I'm enjoying as much plugin horsepower as I could need with Native, so DSP isn't even on my...

Re: Interfaces considered a "step up" from the Avid I|O?

Nice write-up, James! You said:

"Another issue is a lack of Native/Thunderbolt support for the MTRX (and the MTRX Studio for that matter)"

I use HD Native. Are you saying that the MTRX doesn't...

Re: Interfaces considered a "step up" from the Avid I|O?

Digilink is what I meant, yes. No AES might be a dealbreaker. I'd have to see if there are alternate ways to deal with digital.

Re: Interfaces considered a "step up" from the Avid I|O?

Yes, a strong contender. A few friends have been happy with theirs.

Re: Interfaces considered a "step up" from the Avid I|O?

That was the obvious one to me as well but if memory serves it lacks the I/Os I'd need. I'll take another look.

Interfaces considered a "step up" from the Avid I|O?

I've had the Avid HD I|O (w/ 8-channel A/D card added) for many years, and there's certainly nothing wrong with it -- it's clear and detailed and covers the sonic gamut rather well -- *however* I do...
