I meant approved plugs, so AAX DSP before or after the i/o plug in DSP mode will work but native in either order wont.. right?

Yep. It would mount as any external drive if used only for media.
(I cant find my sources right now but am pretty confident)

IMO NVMe will be fine for non boot duties with similar read/write speeds but I have 256G SM951 + Lycom DT120 that may be avail soon. Pm me if interested..

Running a PCI-E SSD as a boot drive will give you great speed for loading sessions and caches, bootup, etc

Correct you need AHCI to boot OSX but the Samsung SM951 version is getting tougher to find. Kingston has a cheaper and ready to use although slower version here
...
