Why would you get a feedback loop, assuming you turned the knob all the way to playback, and muted the track that's getting recorded? You won't be able to hear the track until after you record it,...

I don't know how good the quality of the ProTools mp3 encoder is, but I've found that the best sound MP3s I've heard used the LAME encoder.

I ended up using the AT4033 and the SM57 in an XY pattern. Couldn't hear any phasing, and I'm really happy with how it came out. Hear for yourself:

iTunes itself might not be better. But iTunes plus LAME encoding is better. LAME just uses a better algorithm. You can get the LAME encoder for iTunes on versiontracker.com

First of all, upgrade to 6.1. You'll be happy, and it's free.

Second, I never use ProTools to convert to mp3. I always bounce to AIFF, then import that into iTunes. Then download the LAME encoder...

How do you think the xy pattern would sound with two different mics? I only have one condensor, so I'll be using the AT4033 and an SM57.

But there is no real general rules of thumb. The amount of compression you'll want is going to vary depending on the style of the song, how you set up the mics, how the musician played the part.......

If you switch it over to mono, you should hear if there's any really bad phasing. Basically you'll hear some frequencies drop out in mono that sound fine in stereo. However, it would be a lot easier,...

I'm recording a guitar track soon, and I want to use two mics. Last time I did this, I clicked my mbox over to mono and listened for phasing. I didn't hear any, but I'd really like to check for sure....

I'm definately going to track the vocals and guitar seperately. That's how I did the other track. I recorded a guide take of her singing and playing, and she listened to that while playing both parts...

I'm pretty sure that protools shows the red light right before clipping. I heard it's at -0.3 or something. Modern pop songs are compressed to hell and back, so they're basically sitting near 0db all...
