FAT 32 blunder

My partner unwittingly archived a project onto a brand new firewire drive that was formatted in FAT 32. He didn't realize that the drive needed to be re-formatted for Mac OS, because the drive...

Re: Time adjuster & passing material onto a Mixer

I think this is for multi-mic'd and DI'd tracks. I use time adjuster quite a bit for manipulating the combfiltering effects of recording a single guitar or bass through multiple paths.

Re: HD Digi i/o unit 16 i/o at one time?

Jules,

Yeah, it's possible to make the HD192 a digital 16 i/o box. You have to get an extra digital i/o card. Then you've got a box with 8 analog i/o and 16 digital i/o with AES, TDIF, and...

Re: All smashed up. Distortion techniques.

As for as something in ProTools that's non-conventional (i.e. not Amp Farm or SansAmp), Renaissance EQ distorts rather nicely.

Re: Distortion "masking" in monitors?

As far as the volume thing goes, yes that's pretty much the deal. Your auditory system has limits to how linear it is, just like a mic preamp.

Listening at louder volumes makes it harder to...

Help! Low-level format hard drive snafu

One of the other engineers at my studio couldn't remember the procedure for re-intializing the hard drives, so he accidentally did a low-level format on one of them. Now we can't record or playback...

Re: Noise when doing punch-in/out

Are your punches occuring in the middle of phrases, i.e. while the talent is singing/playing/speaking? This is caused by a discontinuity in the waveform that happens during the sudden transition...

Re: Rewqinding in PT

I think you missed the point Corey.

CFS is looking for a way to have built-in work breaks in his Pro Tools operations the way working with analog tape does (i.e. tape winding).

CFS,

I think...

Re: Universal Audio 2-610 Mic Pre

Felix,

We've got both the UA and an original V72, and you're right, the V72 lacks some things, like variable gain or at least a pad, but that is solved pretty well with a Shure variable in-line...

Re: Guitar tone in pro tools

First of all, why the tube screamer? Those things developed a reputation for having some sort of magical tone quality and now everyone thinks they can just plug it in and have the same results. ...

Re: Would a top notch comp/preamp \'cause clicks...

I've noticed that compressors using feed-forward VCA designs can add weird little pops and distortions on fast transients. Have you tried something with a feed-back design like an 1176? It could...

Re: mixing out of PT with a console

We've been mixing through our console as opposed to Pro Tools. I'm thinking about leaping back to an all PT mix though.

When we first got Pro Tools at the studio, I had never mixed digitally...

Re: Compressor hardware opinions

I would have to second the Crane Song STC-8. It's very transparent and can really keep overheads under control without making them weeze too much.

It also has a mode of operation that adds some...

Re: Lets dicuss hi-hat bleed problems

A bottom mic on the snare can help. It can provide some nice brightness and "fizz" to the sound. This somewhat eliminates the need for boosting the highs on the top snare mic, which exaggerates...

Re: DeEssing basics....someone please help me!!!!!

Some of the large diaphram condensers out there that are aimed at the home/project/lower-budget studio have a significant rise in frequency response around 4k-6k and above. This gives the intial...

Re: How do you mix drums?

Don't forget that if you're using plugins on certain tracks but not others, you need to compensate for the DSP delay. Use the Time Adjuster plug-in or the DLA plugin to make all the delays the same...

Re: Is it worth it at all?

I used the Analog Channel on a project I did not too long ago. I only used the tape simulator, as I have plenty of analog preamps to choose from. The tape simulator was somewhat useful on drums. ...

Re: that\'s it! i need the meanest analog sounding pre

blake eat world,

I've never used the Vintech 1272 model, but from the looks of the controls on the front panel, it seems like you can still probably do controlled overdrive of the mic pre.

Re: that\'s it! i need the meanest analog sounding pre

The Brent Averill Neve 1272's are cool because you can adjust how hard the mic signal hits the preamp. This allows you to sorta simulate tap saturation.

The Telefunkens are cool, but we've had...
