Sometimes it helps to knock the resolution down while you are doing the transcode. I've found that even 720p isn't objectionable on my monitor during a mix. The smaller file size will help with PT...

Maybe you know this trick, but you can hit * on the numerical pad, and then use the arrow keys to move to the digit you want to change and type.

I've gotten pretty damn quick at jumping to a code....

It's been done, you can find examples of it. But it has the risk of bricking your machine and obviously any trouble you run into Apple won't help you. Definitely not recommending that here.
