Well guys, here's the kicker: I sent the bounced tracks to my laptop, where they play with no artifacts at all. It doesn't explain it, but at least it tells me that it's just a local problem.

Sample rate is 48000... I've tried bouncing at both 16 and 24 bit but the weird artifact I hear is present for both.

Yeah, I have 4 slots total so adding two 1GBs would bring me up to 2.5GB total.

Follow up: Did a little research and according to crucial.com, my system can handle up to a 4GB RAM upgrade. That seems like a heck of an upgrade so I wasn't sure if that was overkill... would PT...

Guys, I just can't seem to beat this problem.

After about ten minutes of working in a session, PT gradually takes upwards of 30 seconds to simply play a track - or to give me a stupid buffer...

Thanks for the idea... I do have all the unnecessary stuff unchecked from msconfig though.

One thing I tried turned out to be tremendously helpful: I had earlier disabled my ethernet network...

in the middle of a mix i've found my audiosuite functions to no longer affect my tracks. i can select a region and tell it to increase the gain or shift the pitch, yet hitting "process"...

my gain increases are on individual audio selections within each track. basically i set an overall (fader) level for each track and then toggled the gain on all the different sound elements found...
