Thanks Jeff, the mode was the problem. Note that it needs to be in SUM mode to have a panning slider, not switched. but that did it, thanks!

I noticed in one of Jeff's videos that one of his mono monitor sources ("LB") had a "center" pan fader on the top of the strip in the monitor profile. I assume this is to pan the mono channel across...
