I've been getting this one quite often as well -

The MIDI playback stops on various MIDI instruments as the CPU load rises to circa 50% approx. Audio tracks are NOT affected.

I've been through this and it's frustrating.
Try a different USB port for your MIDI controller. That seems to be where most of my MIDI issues had come from.

I've just updated and have the same issue of codecs missing for video as well.
Was fine in 12.7.1.
I'm also on Mavericks and a bit reluctant to update at the moment.

I do what PT Lover does.
If you decouple VEPro from ProTools you won't get a long save time.
VEPro has helped me get a little more time out of the old G5 HD2accel system :)
