ok heres the work around I found,
it appears LE/pt5.2.1 and the 32 beta may be bugged...I think I saw quite a few posts from people backing up sessions (even TDM users!)who had this exact problem....

found the answer:

uncheck the lacie firewire driver in extensions manger, restart, and the mac displays the lacie d2 icon as any other mac hd icon, then all systems go...
