sure you can install the HP drive without all the extras. Win98 SE should recognize it without HPs drivers.

I like Easy CD Creator for some things, WavLab for others. Don't know about Nero.

We've tried 'em all, and the hands-down consistant winner is Plextor.

Yamaha is a close second.

I would avoid "Smart and Friendly" (it is neither) and any brand you can't pronounce, or never...
