Question sample rates

I have a digi 002. And for the 1st time I notice that my sample rate is 48. Usually it's 44.1. How did that change without me doing anything?

I notice with pro tools 8, you can tweak your bounces more. What conversion quality setting do you recommend. And what is "Tweak head (slowest)"

And why can't you change the conversion quality...

I did all the above, and wasn't even using an external pre, but this brings up another question, I thought you could bypass the external pre in input 1-4 using the line input?

I did, in fact I simplified it to

mic straight to digi 002, no external preamps or compressors

pro tools 7.4.2

My problem is when using certain mics I get noise in the signal line and it's very frustrating. Not everybody can hear it,...
