Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

I have added a new song to my slow, but dedicated webspace. This song was basically am experiment in...feeling. I went home for lunch today, I had an hour to burn, but was feeling pretty [bleep]. So, I wrote some lyrics out, did some music, and a little beat, and slapped her together. The result is interesting. I think it sort of captures the feeling a LOT better than some of my other stuff that takes days, weeks, or even months to finish.

Ben:

Love the tune...Great work with the Loops. When you first started singing, I felt the vocals needed to be a bit louder...However, after listening to the words, I see what you were aiming for.

Not bad for a lunch break project...

Thanks for the Listen

Also, I finally posted two things at my site:

Jake001,
Finally got to listen.....I love em both...'Gilda' and 'Song for Julia'.....Each one is very unique and very well done. Some very fine picking on 'Gilda'(just a fine country song too), and a great vocal by Steve Dostal (I assume) on 'Julia'.
Great stuff, IMO...

Hey Dr. Jake. My bro is doing pretty good. He still cant get the rig up and running, but hes having conficts on his system, and hes been doing a lot of testing at school, so he admits he hasnt been able to fully delve into his system. He expects this weekend he should be able to get to it.

Thanks for listening to the tune. It has some interesting elements to it, including a not so perfect guitar track, but it sort of fit the chaotic 6/4 nature of the song. You probably noticed the drums are clean at the beginning, and then mutate over to really distored throughout the course of the song...

Listened to both of your tracks posted. I really like the drums on Song for Julia. The voice reminds me of Erasure; which is cool, I love them. Im listening here at work, and the mixes sound very good through these speakers. So, I assume that wasnt you singing on Gilda What did you do though? All instruments and such? How is the 002 unit working out? Nice stuff, very clean sounding and mixed well.

Anyway, appreciate you listening, have a good one!

Roy:

Thanks for the listen, I appreciate it greatly. Steve (song for julia) does have a wonderful voice. He wrote, sang and played the guitar on that piece. I had him play to a click and then we sent the files to my buddy in Iowa. He programmed the drums, percussion and played the bass. He also mixed and mastered it as well.

Ben:

I thank you too for the listen. I have listened to your song a couple more times...I see what you mean about the drums...Great effect. I love it! I didn't notice the time signature at first (I'm not too good at that stuff) but after listening to it, I see what you mean...is that you singing? cool Voice.

Those two songs were recorded at my house on the old Digi 001 as well as at my friend's houe in Iowa. he had an 001 set up as well. I usually record the acoustic instruments and vocals at my house and then send them to my friend, Mike, in Iowa. He does the bass, programs the drums (using Acid files) and adds misc. precussion and sings backup. He is also responsible for the mixing and mastering. He's got a great ear for that stuff.

For the guitars I use the Octava M-012's. For the Vox I use a RHODE NT-1000 throught the Behringer vocal processor. For the Banjo and lead guitar, I used a AKG CS-1000. The snare I recorded with the RHODE.

I haven't hooked up the 002 yet. I am waiting on my computer. I have it ordered and it is supposed to come this week or early next week. I can't wait.

Thanks again for listenting...

Ben,

Very well done! I love odd time signatures. I used to play in a band that did some Rush, it was great to watch people try to dance to Subdivisions in 7/8 time! Anyway, the quickest stuff is often the best & most emotional, I guess we don't let our brains get in the way.
Hope things are better now!

Wow!!!! That ROCKED Roger! What was your guitar setup?

Thanks a lot rchaffin,

I used a clean channel out of a Mesa Boogie Passing by a Sansamp PSA-1 Plugin, and a compressor.
The guitars are tuned in G# and I used bass strings for the lowest strings. Guitars used: BC Rich and ESP, both with SD pickups.

Peace out

Wow. That didn't suck!

Can you give a few more specifics on your signal path? Is that direct out of the Boogie, or through a cab? Also, what's the Sansamp PSA-1 Plugin? Sorry if that seems like a stupid Q, but most of my experience lies on the playing side. I'm new to the PT recording thing.

I've got a Boogie Quad IV preamp, a Line6 Pod Pro preamp, and a decent amount of outboard gear. Any suggestions on getting a good direct sound into the Mbox is appreciated.

OK, so I didn't do the research first. Sorry 'bout that. I found the info on the SansAmp PSA-1 plug in online. Pretty cool.

I'd still like some more specifics about some of your other settings. Did I notice a quick stereo delay?

Your stuff sounds great.

Hi every one

I am new to the forum, and new to the audio recording world in general
I am just starting to study Media Technology, and I just got my Digi 002 about a month ago. I learned its basics by trail and error

Anyway, I made a few short Arabic music demos using my new Digi 002 and my new KITRON VEGA EX keyboard. Nothing professional, but I still like to share it with everyone, to learn about its good and bad, etc. So, how and where I can upload those demos?

Kind regards,

Thanks for the feedback Roy!

The 'Holy' song was done by me and a friend of mine David Lucas. David handled the vocal and I did everything else. I'm still not satisified with the outcome. We intend on replacing the drum track with a real set.

'Forgotten' was done by Blind Fate, a local band here, recorded in my studio. Any suggestions for beefing up the guitars? Both songs shared the same path for recording guitars. SM57>API312>ADL1000>Digi001

P.S- I really did your tunes. You're an amazing player!

8mmOverdose,

Nice work on the rough mix! I am very impressed on how even everything sounds. Can you tell me what your signal path looks like for guitars, vocals and drums? What mics + pres are being used? Any outboard gear being used? How do you get the vocals so even sounding? Do you do any compression during recording? I am having a hard time getting even drum and vocal tracks. I am sure that I am not going to disk with the proper dynamic range limiting. I have two dbx 160As that help a lot and still sound good but I can never seem to get a clear and even sounding snare, kick or vocal track. Your words will be appreciated!

Thanks, bro!

Hi Rick,
First, thanks very much..... On the guitars on 'Forgotten', I would probably just start by EQing them to be fatter without losing their bite. I just relistened, and one other suggestion is that some good subtle percussion behind the drums should really help it chug better.....just something to fill in the sparseness of the ride, kick, snare in places.....maybe a shaker or two.
But again, very good job. I'm just trying to be helpful...

Hey Scott,

How many tracks are you getting with that Asus K8V and the Athlon 64? I am thinking about upgrading my 002R based DAW. I am currently using a Athlon 1800+ (Asus A7V266-E motherboard)system and I quickly run out of processing power once I mix in a few plugins. Also, what case are you using? My current system is water cooled with a Koolance PC2-C case. I hope I can use the same case for the upgrade but I know I will have to get a new CPU cooling block. Anyway...

Let me know, bro.

Thanks,

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Thanks for all the kind words. "Back in the day" i would make a point to check out this thread as often as i could, but i just dont have time now. I'll try to answer some of the questions about the recording, and this will take a little time *laugh*...

"Can you tell me what your signal path looks like for guitars, vocals and drums? What mics + pres are being used? Any outboard gear being used? How do you get the vocals so even sounding? Do you do any compression during recording? I am having a hard time getting even drum and vocal tracks. I am sure that I am not going to disk with the proper dynamic range limiting."

This song has had quite a history & you may laugh when you hear some of the "techniques" (or lack of) i used. I started this song in cakewalk about at least 4 or 5 years ago. The original acoustic version was done to a click track. All the vocals were tracked with a Shure SM81 into a $300 Soundcraft mixing board. I was using a Digital Audio Labs "Card D+" soundcard. I think I eq'd the input signal a bit, but no outbaord FX were used for tracking. The vocalist had very good mic technique which resulted in very even vocal levels. The acoustic guitars were also tracked using only an SM81. There is just one track on acoustic in this version, panned dead center.

The "harder" work took place in pro tools. I imported the audio files and built on it. The drums are not acoustic, however they were played by a drummer on my Pintech electronic kit. He somehow was able to follow the click & real "loose" guitar tracks. The final midi signal was passd through a ddrum 4 module directly into pro tools. Mind you this is just a rough track, but I actually ran the ddrum 4 into the preamps (ch 1 & 2) of my digi 001. If anyone is considering electronic drums, get ddrums and never look back. I may never record acoustic drums again.

After we tracked the drums to the acoustic guitars & click track, I had a crazy idea to electrify the song in the style of "Boston". The artist was intrigued so I went with it. I used two mics for each of the electric guitar tracks, but eneded up just using the tracks I recorded with the Shure SM57. The cab was a single 12" mesa, the head was a JCM 900, the guitar was a strat with a humbucker. I used various levels of gain for each of the guitar tracks. The SM57 was plugged straight into my digi 001 ch 1 preamp. i think there are upwards of 7 guitar tracks in some parts of the song, towards the end maybe 10!

I did not play the bass and if I recall I ran it direct through a focusrite voicemaster pre into pro tools. It was a P-bass with active EMG's.

I spent A LOT of time lining up everything. Roy will remember the original song had a really loose feel. I manually adjusted the midi drum notes and cut/pasted audio tracks to improve the timing & meter. I chose the best played electric guitar tracks & cut/pasted them into place. I also added in one drum fill which i created by cut/pasting one of the other fills in the song. The song was recorded in a very "backwards" manner so it was real sloppy 'till I started making adjustments to tighten things up. I may change the hi hat to a more "open" sound, but other than that I am pleased with the results.

I am still using a digi 001. this was actually recorded and mixed using PTLE 5.11. I also have an ADI 8 pro hooked up which definately improves the overall sound quality. For the vocal mixdown i used an antares tube, a little eq on the high end, a compressor & reverb. The only guitars with any type of processing of fx are the single "lead solo" and the acoustic "picked" harmonics at the end of the song. the rest of the guitar tracks are dry, not even any eq. The only FX on the drums is reverb.

And thats the life story of Rebecca.

Roy, you never answered my emails so I gave up. I think I owe you a poster or shirt or something. I am playing a lot of shows locally, we picked up a Jagermeister sponsorship a little over a year ago so this keeps me busy. We are scheduld to tour Europe in October, but we havent toured Japan for almost 2 years. We will hit the west coast again the beginning of 2005. I am still working on my bands latest cd, its been over 2 years now. But I will have it done before we go to Europe. And now I am tired of typing!

8mm,

Interesting story. It's funny how the songs that end up going to "tape" in unusual manners end up with more vibe, character and always end up sounding better than the straight up sessions - at least for me. Maybe it's the time spent on getting them right that makes all the difference. Thanks for taking the time to respond and good luck with all your motions.

Peace,
Greg

I just had to post this little bit. Here's the story. My aunt asked me to convert all of their old 8mm film to DVD. I asked them what would they like for sound in the background, the clicking of the projector was not an option .

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Hey Roy, sorry for the delayed response(no internet in my new place yet). You know the synths tend very much to have a different role in each song. In the past, I was quite lazy, and would just take the onboard sounds from my racks, and record them straight into PT. Then I started layering guitars on them.
Recently ive gotten the nerve to control sound parameters from PT, which, as you know requires you to open those darned manuals, and find out if its MIDI parameter 70 or 71 that controls Oscillator 1 or 2 or 3 or 4 in the synthesizer. I admit, its takes considerably longer than 'the old method' of mine, but as a bonus, you can really open up the sound of your synths.

The thing about this song that I really liked, was the retard timing. And on top of that, the switchback on the rhythm, for example.

1 - - 2 - - 3 - - 4 - - 5 - - 6 - - 7 - - 8
b bs b bs b bs b b bs b bs b bs b s b

Where B's = Kicks, S's equal Snares, And the numbers on top are the meter(3/3). So, halfway through each bar, the drums reverse roles, and the Snare becomes the 'kick'....sorry, i forgot all technical terms, its early monday morning.

Anyway, I like that, and I like the simple layout...And then for the sound of drums getting chunky, there is the original track, and two duplicates of it, ran through a distortion pedal each, panned close left and close right, bass dropped out via EQ, and then fades on them as to build up the chaos to a messy end. Theres actually a much better version of the track I meant to put online today, but I left the files at home...

Thanks again for the listen, I appreciate it.

Hello everyone!

I just had to share this with you:

Everything Burns (campfire mix)

This is what happened when the recording button was pressed down for the FIRST TIME on my PT LE 6.4 (MBOX) system. The singer and the guitarist from our band had an idea of doing an unplugged version of one of our songs. This gave me a chance to try my new livingroom "studio" in action.

This was all tracked in 2 steps last friday night. First we recorded the guitars and bass on one take as you can hear from the mistakes Then we did the vocals. In all it took us about 6 hours to get track and mix.

I know it's not a master piece but for my first session on PT I'm pretty happy with it

Any kind of feedback is more than welcome.

Thanks for listening!!!

It's called I COULD BE WRONG.

The Mp3 lives here:

It's me on voice and instruments and noises:

It's kind of slow, melancholic kind of thing. Dreaming.

ok, here's my first submission to this or any forum. Its a Dub Reggae track, so I wanted to have a little lo-fi feel to it. As in the dub from the seventies out of King Tubby's studio, I'm using spring reverb and tape echo alot. I'd love to get some input on how the mix sounds - I don't trust my ears at all these days.

All,
Have not posted on this section for awhile. Here is a song from a band that I finished up tonight. They are called THE GREENLINE and are from Washington D.C. I really started to dig these guys. Very LO-FI punk rock. This to me is one of their better tunes and really has a cool STROKES feel. They tracked at a friends studio because I was out of town. Then he went out of town so the mixed at my studio. They are VERY happy with the overall sound and result. I will put other samples on my website.

Pretty much got everything as clean and compressed as I could, then they wanted to dirty the vocals so we added Antares Tube in DEVIL MODE Just a smidge of distortion and it set it just right.

Enjoy,
