Error 9173 on startup

Hi guys,

Currently having a major issue where I get the AAE #-9173 (Pro Tools ran out of CPU power) message on start up. Yesterday everything was working fine but today I'm constantly getting this error code even on start up with a blank session!? How can it run out of cpu power when there's not even a single plug-in?

Currently have tried restarting the computer, changing USB ports for the interface, updated anything related to pro tools, changed buffering size and cache size all to no avail. Currently running pro tools 12.7.1 with the CPU running at about 40% load. Have loaded past sessions and even blank sessions and am unable to do anything without the error code.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

CPU: Intel 15-4690K @ 3.50GHZ
Interface: Focusrite Scarlett 18i20
Pro tools: 12.7.1
Memory: 8GB DDR3
OS: Windows 7

Is it happening on Application startup, or session launch?

Re: Error 9173 on startup

When I open a session and click play I instantly get the error message, even if its a blank session. When I unplug the scarlett 18i20 and just run the session straight from the computer it works but as soon as I set the Scarlett to the playback engine I instantly get the error code

The fact that the error disappears when you unplug the Scarlett indicates that the problem is there. 9173 is a buffer underrun error. Try trashing your preferences. If that makes no difference, check that you have the latest Focusrite driver and re-install it.

Re: Error 9173 on startup

Thats what I was thinking. The interface does work in ableton live though... Have deleted the pref and almost every other troubleshooting option. Even reinstalled everything from drivers to pro tools. Hard to understand what could be going wrong when it seems the interface is causing the error 9173 (cpu issue).

Quite a few people seem to have problems with Focusrite interfaces and drivers.

Running pro tools off a SSD. Have tried loading sessions off the same SSD, another SSD, HDD, and portable HDD. Still same issue. Going to try a friends scarlett 18i20 and see if i get the same issue

I had this problem and it was pissing me off all day. The fix for me was to update the drivers for my USB interface. Mine is a PreSonus AudioBox 44VSL.

Re: Error 9173 on startup

I have/had this issue. It ticks me off but it happens very rarely and shutting everything off and restarting computer makes it run for days with no issues.
Sometimes I have to restart twice.
I have a Presonus Studio 192 and a DP88 and an old Profire 2626 on mine.
I HAVE noticed that if I have my Roland SPD-SX hooked up via USB it almost always causes a problem. Disconnect that and it is rare but still happens on occasion.
