Hey guys,
I've been listening to a bunch of great tunes. Very impressed with the production and writing, thanks for all your posts.
Here is an old one my band did. We went pretty easy on the production side, since it was just our first demo and time was a factor. Anyhow,it seems you guys give great advice. I hope you enjoy.
Thanks again for your posts in all the threads.

Up for some air !

Hello,

I have been spending time doing a lot of reading and listening to advice from the members on the DUC here lately. With that in mind, I have reworked my latest tune, I would appreciate any feedback on whether my studying helped or destroyed the tune. Feel free to say anything about the tune, I will take your observations constructively.

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

brdst- Excellent song! The mix, however, needs work. The drums are too loud compared with the bass and guitar. The vocals are very clear and out front which is good. I like the harmonies. I think if you leave the drums where they are and bring the other instruments up you'll have something really going. Again, really great song.

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Badperson,
DIG THE HELL OUT OF THE SONG! Very Widespread Panic meets A. Brothers sound. Brings me back to the South GA, Valdosta days a few years ago. Very southern sounding.... Dig the guitar souds too. Very dry, but fits the tune incredibly well. The panning on the guitars is nice too. Makes the brain wander when your eyes are closed. I felt like I was at a PANIC show....

Great sound? Who is singing? I mean is this a band or is this you?

Drums are nice too. Might bring the kick up a notch or two? Same with the bass, but it is very cool sounding... Letting it loop my player now... Might have to archive this one for later listening!

Good job,
-Doc

the thing that jumps out at me is the misfrett 3rd note of the arpeggiated 2nd chord.
First 15 second's are really important, Kinda a first impression thing.

ok, kiddies... here's a new one:

Deep House (aka BaSStardO)

ok, this song should put to bed the old pc vs. mac debate. the answer is... THE BEST MUSIC COMES WHEN PC AND MAC COLLABORATE!!!

yes, you heard right. this is a kris whitten / BaSsTaRd! production and its phat as hell...

kris programmed the beats and i did the bass. we split the synth stuff 50/50. its 99% reason. i recorded my bass (MTD535 through sansamp bass DI with a smidgen of morley bad horsey II) and chopped up a few choice tidbits into rex files, then imported it into reason.

its pretty hot.

I started the Pro Mastering: Before and After thread with the latest project I just finished. It got a lot of attention from there, but I thought I'd post it here as well (incase some DeathRock fans missed the other post). We had it mastered a couple weeks ago. They were recorded and mixed on my 001 with PTLE 5.1.1 and only digirack plugs (on all but vox and drum overheads. I'd say more, but I gotta run. (BTW, not my band. Friends of mine)

Here they are...

DB- nice song, good mix. I've always wanted to try my hand at a techno type song but I've never gotten around to it. Everytime I listen to any of your songs I get excited about the possibility of doing one but, alas, it never happens. Anyway, great stuff. Love the bass work.

Phat, DB. Berrry, Berry Noiwce. When's the album coming out?

BP - you've got that 60's/70's Grateful Dead/Woodstock era feel going. Cool. I like the lyrics, too.

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Just listened to a handful of recent posts. We should stream this stuff live on Live 365 or something...a 24 hour DUC internet radio station!

Anyway...

BadPerson - Light Ahead is very cool. A nice, warm, full mix with a not-so-biting guitar playing really tasty chops. Nice job. I like the relaxing, vibey mix. Nice job!

ee99ee - Astronomy isn't that bad at all. You did a nice job on the guitar separation and sound. It's not the best singing I've heard in my life, but you did a good job putting the vocals in the right place. I never felt like I lost them at all. Nice work.

viljoen - I Need You sounds really good. I love the tight, tough snare. Adds some "pop" to the song. Pianos are a bit sterile and electronic to my liking...acoustic piano would go great with that drum sound, IMO...but it sounds great. Good luck with the record!

Kris - STIA remix is indeed funky. Funky as hell. I like the DaftPunk sweep effect...it got me thinking...the vocals holding steady while the rest of the mix sweeps behind it might sound even cooler. I would have tried that. The vocals are great. The female vocalist is really good! It's such a pleasure to record and mix a great female singer...easy on the ears after hours of mixing!

Gene - If you want some criticism (if you must have it) on Waving Goodbye, I would only say that the lead synth is a tad too loud. The instrumentation is so pleasant to listen to and the lead line would cut through with even more mystery if it was mixed lower...what I mean is, it would have more character if it was a tiny bit more "distant"...but I'm nitpicking...I really enjoyed the tune!

Roy, sorry to be stepping on your moderator toes, but I want to comment on a few songs here so frankly, I can hear more comments on my stuff. I value what you guys have to say, and I would personally like to get more criticism and comments. It seems like I use every one I get!

Keep up the great work guys! I'll comment on a few more when I have time.

Thanks Bill,

This is what I was looking for. I did drop the lead guitar in the middle to let the supporting melody to take over, but I do see your point. The lead guitar should not have that much presence, it doesn't really need it.

This is great, that you so much !!!

Gene

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

well then, this evening the central air at my studio crapped out. of course i had been planning on working on a bunch of projects tonight! sooooo what did i do? i came home and listened to the music on this thread. i think its been 3 or 4 pages since i last listened so here it goes - i took notes and will try to decipher what i wrote!

roy howell you ole son of a buck, when are you going to learn how to sing? sorry, i cant think of any other critisisms. how come you are not a millionare from your songs yet? (moonbeam dancer)

archtop- hey i didnt know you did electric! nice recording, cool song, i like it (PUG)

IntelDoc and Chris Cavell- i really wanted to hear the songs but none of the links worked for me. well everybody else seemed to like them, so great job anyway!

ee99ee- i liked it- rock and roll baby! did you go to the kurt cobain school of vocals? i couldnt understand a d@mnn word you were singing! it doesnt matter, i still like it. i would say that the kick was hard to hear, its just kind of a thud. i do like the loud gtr, but i think the overall drum sound could be "bigger" to fit with the style of music. i looked at your website and saw an svt3 pro and svt cabs. same setup as me. i also read that you recorded the bass direct for the song. i have been using a sans amp bass di pedal for my bass tracks. using (basically) the svt setting, i get a better sound with it than actually micing the svt cab. anyway, good job.

badperson- very van morrison/grateful dead kinda combo 70's vibe. good job, i like it!

brdst- another 70's kinda feel IMO, i really liked the vocals.

gene backlin- you posted this before, right? WELL I still like it, nice dreamy kinda vibe.

mr seven- good recording, nice groove, good song, good job.

reniur- i think i listened to this song awhile back, it was a rough mix you had posted somewhere else? anyway, the mix really came a long way since then and i think the mastering really tightened it all up. good job.

brian/kris whitten- sucks. . . j/k . nice growly bass, its a thumpin' song! i was a little bummed around 2.00 when it dropped out, but it came back in full force. keep up the good work. BTW, i really think those mac made tracks improve brian's overall sound quality!

i am out!

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">I feel your pain. My air just got fixed on tuesday after a solid week without it (I don't know exactly how hot it wasin my house, my thermostat tops out at about 92).

Thanx for the kind words on tha mixes it was a labor for how little went into it. I did post some rough mixes a few months back. I had also posted the one I played cello on (Escape), so I added that one to the page. I made it as big as I could (10.1 mb) because I couldn't stand to lose the cymbals. It's still an mp3, tho. Escape is one of my favorites of theirs, and I think it has a wider appeal, being a more ballady rock tune. I know the cellos are a bit low, but they are more for texture. Also, for the first 2 verses, I'm playing 2 different parts, then after that, all my takes are the same line. I know it's not a complicated part either, but I think a busy melody would have really cluttered things.

Anyway, sorry for the big file
