It's called "Freaky With You". It's #2 on my playlist. I used Pro-Tools 6.1 (Digi 001), along with my Roland XV5080 and my voice.

Thank you in advance.

Hey Harold,

Good stuff as usual. The only little nagging thing is that the crash symbal that's coming out of the left speaker seems a bit out place. Perhaps it's because it's the same sample over and over again without any subtle changes in volume. If you want it to play as often as it does, maybe consider putting some sort of effect on it so it doesn't seem as "real" compared to the other sounds in the song.

The one thing I notice about your songs is that there very little reverb or delay used, especially on your vox. Not sure if that's intentional or not, but adding some here and there (with discretion) might help give the songs an added dimension/sparkle that seems to be missing.

All in all, great work.

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Hey thanks for taking out the time to listen to my pieces. It's very appreciated. I DON'T like to overdo it with reverb. The thing is though, maybe I rely on my Roland synths too much, but even with TrueVerb, RVerb and IR1, I can never seem to find a reverb that I like on my voice.

The majority of my tracks utilize reverb out of my Roland XV5080, and I use TrueVerb and RVerb on all of my tracks. I just don't overdrench them in the Reverb. On Freaky with you, I used a Medium Hall reverb on a separate Aux Bus, however, the sends from each channel were set to really low levels, to match the reverb used from the XV5080.

What do you folks think of the Motu 8 pre you have?

I've really enjoyed it. It supposedly only has 40db of headroom but I like the sound of it. I'll actually just say that it gets the job done but it's very efficient. Thanks for listening. David

Hi, I recorded this song in TDM, but mixed completely in LE 7. Its a song for kids based on a series of childrens books.

I've got a few things for people to listen to...check out my myspace page.

The one at the top is the most recent. I'm very pleased with it, I used only organic sounds (some funky ones) and kept it really dry.

Would be great to hear some feedback!!

Re: Mac Mixes!!!!!!!!

Jimbo,
That's mighty fine stuff you got going there. The demo nature of it is very Elliot Smith/Nick Drake in production value. But the songwriting and execution is definitely hip and current.

I just posted a new one as well on myspace -- it's called Ninethirteen. I need to take another pass at this mix as it is just way too thin right now. But at least most of the heavy lifting is done. Now the endless ironing (production) of my shirt (song), or whatever that analogy is. Critique and comments are much appreciated.

I have some new tracks that I produced and engineered for Cuba's second CD "Epilogue"....

Photography
In Between Things
High Fidelity

Are available to listen to at:

http://myspace.com/cubamusic

All were recorded on PT LE 7.3, Dual 1.6G Mac 4G memory, Drums were through an SM Pro Audio preamp with ADAT out - PG56's on Toms sometimes, PG52 on the kick, otherwise ATM801 omnis for overheads, snare mic was usually PG81, Bass was direct via Presonus Blue preamp, Vocals recorded with a Sterling Audio ST66 tube, acoustic guitars were either a Groove Tubes GT40 tube mic or Sony ECM22P (depending upon the song), electrics were recorded with AKG D202E's (WHAT! Not an SM57? - great mic, but try the AKG if you want a balanced electric amp), sometimes used a Digitech VTP-1 for the guitar preamp.. compressors/limiters, you wouldn't believe me if I told ya!

Comments welcome!!!

Re: Mac Mixes!!!!!!!!

Thanks! Yes, it was fun. My second CD for them.

Electric guitars were mic'd using an AKG D202E about 6 inches from the center of the speaker of a Fender Pro Jr. Distortion was a Tube Screamer. Guitar on In Between Things was an acoustic Takamine through a Digitech RP80. Acoustic guitar on High Fidelity was a Martin mic'd with Groove Tubes GT40 tube mic and a Sony ECM 22P.

Re: Mac Mixes!!!!!!!!

The guitar on "In Between Things" was a acoustic? Which one?

Darney 12-10-2007 11:49 AM

Re: Mac Mixes!!!!!!!!

Heh... yes... the one with wah on it is an acoustic guitar through the RP80. one of the other guitars is a Les Paul being played with an eBow and then through a Moogerfooger filter.. it's the drone guitar.. the guitar on the percussion break is an ESP electric through a Pro Jr.

Hey guys... I am a newbie to recording. I would love some feedback on my mixes!! To be honest I am still learning and I think they sound like crap, but you be the judge! I don't know how to achieve that industry quality sound, and I don't even know if it's possible with my setup. Click on the link in my signature and it will direct you to my myspace page. Please take a listen to "revival instrumental", "I won't forget this" and "life".

Thanks!

Darney 12-14-2007 06:30 AM

Re: Mac Mixes!!!!!!!!

Basically, not too bad. experiment with mic placement.
Watch the autopan stuff - it's annoying and distracting on Revival..
Try touches of EQ to give better identity to the instruments.. be careful with compression.. dynamics are part of song writing.

Overall.. good start.. interesting music.

For a beginner, VERY good.. better than some people I know who've been doing it for years.

Keep us updated on what you're doing.

Thanks for the kind comments matey,

um, briefly...

Mac G5 with PTLE 7.3
Digi002Rack

Miked up with two condenser mics (an SE2200 and AKG c3000b).
One mic in via my Focusrite Voice Master (for the preamp) and the other straight in...

Most of the sound is natural recording, just a little EQ and compression, of course - oh, and a splash of reverb.

:-)

Re: Mac Mixes!!!!!!!!

Darney,
Photography is just spot on. I always screw the pooch with sparse instrumentation where trying to create mood and space is the focus. In Between Things and High Fidelity too -- everything I hear is just first rate with "that" sound that seems to be the signature today (Keane, Youth Group, etc.). The material and artists are not too shabby either, but the production shines on these. When I listen to these and A/B against my stuff I so have to fight the urge not to chuck my gear out the window. But it's also inspiring to know you're getting these results -- albeit with vastly more skill, and I'm willing to wager some better outboard gear -- on a platform not too dissimilar to mine.

Question, how were the vox recorded? What chain -- mic, pre and comp/eq, etc. And, did you master? If so, can I ask with what?

Again, excellent stuff. I'm thinking I might be hearing from these guys soon.

Re: Mac Mixes!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the kind words, it means a lot!

The vocals were recorded with a Sterling ST66 tube mic. The mic pre was just the built-in preamp of a Behringer Eurorack MX3242X (!!!).. the limiting/compressing was done using an OLD stereo MXR Dual limiter (circa 1980), and later smoothed out in the mix with the Bomb Factory BF76. The only EQ applied was the De-esser that Digidesign provides with ProTools.. unless it was a telephone effect.. for that, I used the T-Racks that ships with ProTools.

In Between Things - the vocals were recorded clean... then the track was duplicated, crushed all to heck with some extreme compression and Gleetchplug's D-Rive (freebie) was used for the distorted vocal.. clean and distorted mixed together for flavor.

The delays on the songs were created by a TC Electronic M300 (cheap) via the S/PDIF in a buss send, and the reverbs were simply variants of the D-Verb that comes with ProTools.

I think the key to the sound I'm getting is the result of submixing the drums and using Steven Massey's L2007 limiter (It blows away Maxim and it's cheap) on the submix out. Go to his web site and buy his plug-ins! They're great and he's a really nice guy.

Final mastering was done using jk-limo5 multiband limiter/distortion (a pluggo freebie, btw), an Aphex 204 (also cheap) and that's about it.

Yeah, I'm pretty pumped by this project. I produced their first CD (Sounds Like A Story) and I think these guys are going to be heard after this new one.

Don't believe all the hype about having to use $2,500 preamps and crap.. that's nonsense. The key is a decent mic in a good location on a tuned instrument and a song worth recording.

Don.
I'll be checking out your stuff too!

Re: Mac Mixes!!!!!!!!

Wow. That's amazing. Pro results with "pro-sumer" gear. I shudder to think what you'll accomplish in a "real" studio. Although, I think you'd probably get great results with a tape recorder and a Radio Shak mic.

Don't feel obligated to punish your ears with my racket. I just make noize for myself and anyone unfortunate enough to be a friend. But any critique and advice is welcome.

I've been to the Massey site before and have heard nothing but great things about him and his plugs. In fact, I think he's also mainly responsible for the Trillium Labs verbs as well. However, I got the McDSP Project Studio bundle and I LOVE them. In fact, I want to save up and get the full native bundle suite. Although, I think I'll be looking at that Massey Limiter too. I mean it's just so affordable.

Again, I'm floored by the quality of your work.

Hi.

I started producing/engineering for this artist, and kinda became part of the band.
"Victory" is the single off the album.
I can post better quality audio if anyone wants to hear "non-crappy-myspace" versions lol.

New Songs. Please critique if at all possible. I'm still using my 001/6.1 on my old P4 PC to record my tracks. This year, I plan on purchasing an MBOX Micro giving me access to 7.4! Drag and drop editing baby!!!

Re: Mac Mixes!!!!!!!!

Downhill - interesting song... but somewhat muddy I think... I don't hear much definition in the instruments. Sounds like the basic tracks are recorded well, but overall.. midrangy (is that a word?).

Unabashadly Political Song - better mix on this one! Still a little 'cloudy'...

Play In The Rain - Not too shabby.. high end on the vocals is missing..

Overall... lack of high end clarity.. some interesting stuff going on musically.

Yooooooooo there everyone, I've been part of this Leadership group in Las Vegas for a few months and for part of it we decided to get together a tribute song for the CA fires. Me and 3 other people in the group got together and made this song happen. I recorded all the actual instruments and my buddy Jerime does the rap/spoken word, I sing, and this 51 year old lady in my group Nancy does some singing. This song's probably going to be played at a San Diego Chargers play-off game (no [bleep]) and a Phoenix Suns Basketball game (the team's owner is in my group, [bleep]' random!!!), so obviously I'm ridiculously excited. Besides that I'm just happy about how it turned out so give 'er a listen!

p.s. I'll get the lyrics up here in a bit, they're obviously an important part of the song.

I loved this song the first time i heard it! Congrats on a beautiful song! The arrangement, mix and production are stellar! If i would change anything i would get an echo type vibe in the very beginning that ramps up to where the drums kick in, and then continue that vibe by manipulating the vocal space in the spoken word part i.e...levels, hi-lighting certain words. Great song! Tim

I recently did my first mix session in ProTools. I thought it was pretty fun. Only complaint I had about mixing in ProTools is that I don't like the delay plugs. Any ways you can hear the songs on my myspace. Only 2 of the 4 songs on my forthcoming ep were mixed in ProTools, the others, cubase. You can hear them on my myspace page

Can you guess which was done in protools? If you don't want to, it was Berliner and Robot.
