OVERNIGHT LOWS

Finally heres a new rocking song we just finished. This is my fist mix of the song, so I still gotta check it on different systems. It's called "Stop Thinking So Hard"

another good song. i think it needs to be more open and the vocals should be more upfrount, more like 'delay the wait' 'leech' and 'the way that i am' i think they are great.
what are your vocal and drum chains?

I use a Rode tube mic for vocals, I forgot the name (its arond $500) And drums always change. This time I used APIs straight into PT were I EQed some of the "digital" out. Drums recorded at my friend Doug's studio.
By upfront you mean less wet? because this vocals are louder than our previous songs, wich were dryer. Thanks for then input

just more room in the mix, im not sure how else to describe it.
what effects are you running on them? i think the dryer vocals cut through a bit more but i wouldnt say you washed the vocals out.

Re: OVERNIGHT LOWS

Joz,
Alright you asked for input... here ya go... I have followed your posts and mixes, and even had fun with one of your mixes.... And this has nothing to do with your skills either.... Now, this one is totally different and that is always good. You guys still have tha psuedo, new age Gwen Steffanie (california) sound and that is good. Suites the area and your style it seems. Plus like I have said before, your singer is a hottie. Tell her I said that too please.

Now, one thing that I noticed right away is that your drums are COMPLETELY different than before songs. Now honestly I do not like the sounds on this tune. Sounded too dark and compressed. I have this problem at times in my mixes too. This song compared to "Where" is totally different with drums. Might be lack of EQ or something, but just overall they did nothing for me.

Guitars are good as always and fit the tune. A little heavy on the left side of the mix. The right is muddier too. The left guitar is nice, but is louder. Nice pan with the solo at 2:05 though. That was a good tough. I would experiment bringing it back over to the other side too.

Vocals, not sure what you did differently but I hear overdrive in the vocals. Maybe pushing the pre or the mic too hard onthis one? Just not fitting for her voice with the tune and YES the vocals are further back in the mix for this tune. Sounds muddy with the overdrive too. What happened to the 2 vocal track highly compressed, and HIGH EQ trick you hav done in the past?

Keep at it, like I said I have followed your music and your band for awhile now and always like the end result. This one to me still needs work.

Later,

- Doc

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

This is probably somewhat atypical for this thread, but I had a session over the weekend with a vocalist that wanted to record her vocals to some karaoke tracks for her own wedding. As a result I got to try out the Studio Projects C3 that I recently scored with a great female vocalist... anyway, check it out and let me know what you think. I think the mic did a great job, of course it helps to have a great subject... All the vocals are her but the music is a karaoke style backing track. We did several but here is one example.

I had time to listen to it on different systems and heres a way better mix. Plus we re-recorded alot of vocals, added some stuff to the verses and we have a vocal outro now. It just works much better now.

Michael: nice job on the vox man. sounds like the SPC3 gives her vocals a little more of an airy kind of feel which works well for the song.

Joz: first and foremost I gotta say WHOA!! honestly man, I don't mean this as a rip, but the new drums and new melodies on her vox in the track just aren't working. Your old mix that you guys did maybe 6 months ago or when you posted it last filled out the song very much more than the new arrangement. I believe if you guys are going for a groove, that the first version is the way to go caus it would definately sell better IMHO.. I think I have also personally burned the first version into my brain 50 zillion times on my playlist anyhow honestly man.. The song its self is great man caus anything you guys have written is right on, but the arrangement needs work yet honestly if it is going to become up tempo like that.. goodluck man

Fine - Tom Rothman - New Mix

Guys,
So I watched th Charles Dye DVD last night... twice... picked out some ideas and applied it to this song. I really liked the result. Here is link... Much cleaner mix and a lot more depth....

Original mix:

FINE - Original Mix

New Dye Style Mix: tweeked with some other stuff.

NEW "FINE" Dye Mix style

We wanted that Live like acoustic feel..... I think it works and still has lots of dynamics.

Enjoy,

Doc

Hmm... I am downloading that one at the moment here. Took forever uploading some tracks for the current collab and wasn't about to attempt an upload and download at the same time... I will give it a listen though man. Did it open up her performance a little more with the new mix?

superpenguin79 09-14-2005 01:20 PM

Re: Fine - Tom Rothman - New Mix

Doc: listened to the Jen Michie tune again and the acoustic really opened up with this mix man. Great job on that one! As for her voice, it still does not do it for me honestly man.... There is just something about her tone that is lacking or off... Can't quite place my finger on it, but in my best description the way she is singing it makes it sound dark to some degree... I almost wonder if something like a different mic or combo of mics would open it up a little and add some air or more highs to her voice? just can't quite get into a deep voiced chick like that honestly I guess... lol

otherwise, got any other tunes in the mix at the moment? hope all is cool man. peace

Hi Charlie...here are some pics of my new desk and setup. I had the desktop custom cut. The desk is 13' long, 3' deep, with a 5' extension...ample room now for both audio and video work(one pc for each). BigBubbaJ(Justin) built the pc(blue lights) for me...and the accent lights above are really nice...great place to work now.

Roy: very nice setup man! I dig everything and the blue lights, had a couple of those on my machine, but they died on me... lol I will pray that you never have to move with that desk though man.. looks like she'd be something else to move. hehe btw... in your guitars there, I did not notice any Gibson Songwriter deluxe or J-200's man.. I always imagined that you would be the guy to have a great collection of those type of guitars to work with your strats. hehe Thanks for sharing the pics though man. You reminded me also that I gotta take some pics of my new room setup at the new place yet. Have to wait til I tear everything down from the setup I got going in there at the moment though on a collab. any new sound clips from the new room man? peace

Re: NEW SONGS!

Hey guys - been a while since I've talked to some of you folks. Anyway, I've got some new tunes if you guys have time to check them out. You can find them here:

http://www.jenningsweb.com/metonic-cycle/

"Drive" has been posted here before (though I welcome any new comments, as this is a new mix/master), while "Breakdown" and "Need" are both 100% new. All three of these songs were tracked using a 001 - some tracks through an Octopre/001 combination. Everything as far as the mix is concerned is all ITB Pro Tools LE 6.4 (third-party plugs of course), and the mastering was done in Sony Soundforge 6 and CD Architect 5 (via Waves Mastering bundle). On most of the synth parts I used a Korg MS2000, though there are plenty of Reason tracks throughout. The guitars are half stomp/POD/Amplitube and the other half stomp/amp (Vox Pathfinder, e609 mic). Anyway, I could go on. Let me know what you guys think, and if you have any questions/comments I'll be more than happy to entertain!

Oh, be sure to check me out/add me on MySpace too (see signature)!

Here is a rough mix of a session this past weekend. These guys were a blast. All really young too. Not your typical stuff for this age. Great musicians also. I had a blast. We did 4 total so I will post the others soon. Comments welcome as usual.

Re: New Project

Sharritan,

Very nice performances. I like how there's some dynamics there too. The only things I noticed:

1.) The vocals seemed burried at times.
2.) The drums seemed too hot most of the time.

That's just my opinion, though. It's tracked well, and that's what really matters. You can always adjust the mix if needed.

Nice work,

Ok well that was a piece of [bleep]. This one is under construction but far more worked out:

The Journey.

Copied & pasted the 1st verse & chorus to the end of the song and fiddled somewhat around w/guitar in that part. Drums is a 1-bar loop in Reason. Bass played by a friend, plugged into his harddiskrecorder for compression then into the 001. Acoustic guitar recorded with a Sennheiser MD 425, electric guitar a Washburn into a Crate amp, recorded with the Sennheiser. Vocals recorded with an old Shure 12A, whatever that may be for type of mic...... Gotta write more text for this one. All comments welcome.

There's some good stuff going around. Spirithunter I like your more melodical pieces a lot! Especially Alien Nation and Into the Light very much.

Will be back on track later on, keep it going!

Walther.

Re: Guitarjam w/Rex drums

Walther: nice upbeat tempo on that one man. I would add a little something to the vox though as they seem a little mono/non-emotional though honestly. You might try some trailing reverb/delay, or maybe double them and phatten them up a little possibly. goodluck

Voideco 09-22-2005 11:00 PM

Re: Guitarjam w/Rex drums

Hi Charlie, thanks for the listen. Yes I am going to add some reverb to the voice or maybe a tiny bit of delay. Also the 2nd voice is too loud in this mix but that's a minor issue. Gotta work on the lyrics most of all now.

Cheers!
