audio technica 3035?
 

Anyone out there ever used a Audio Technica 3035 before? I'm thinking of getting one. Any other suggestions for large diaphram condenser in the $200 range?

We have a 3035. I think it can be a very useful mic. I'm not sure about what else is good in the price range, but if you need a really versitile mic, it may not be your pic. It has a very present midrange and high end, not much warmth, and a tendancy to be way too harsh for some female vocalists. It also has a very low self-noise level.

The 3035 is perfect for mumbly male vocalists because of it's high end and midrange presence, and can be useful for other things as well. I'd say compare it to others you have in mind and see what you like best.

I don't know if you're the guy that emailed me last night, but on our site, the Second Skin song "Scream Yourself to Sleep" had all the vocals done with the 3035 and no eq or compression (if you want to hear how it sounds thru a Digimax). On the deathrock project I'm currently producing we used the 3035 for a room mic for tracking the guitars (I'll be getting a baby bottle soon to do the vox for this project).

i personally find the 3035 a little harsh for most applications although it is not entirely useless.

you might be better off with a Rode NT1-A or if you want to stick with AT, the 4050 is really quite nice for the price and well worth the difference although it is a little coloured in the top end.

i also hear good things about the studio projects microphones from people who's ears i trust but haven't heard them myself.

i haven't had too much experience with these budget type mics so aside from suggesting you spend thousands upon thousands of dollars, these are the only suggestions i can honestly make for mic's in this price range.

I have two AT 3035 and I think in that price range thy are really good mics, I really don't find them as harsh or as edgy as others above described; I'm using them on lots of things, from acoustic guitars (in conjunction with a pair of Rode NT5 at the 12th fret), flute, banjo, bozouki, ukulele, various percussions and vocals: so far I had great results (it may be depending on the preamp too, I'm using a Focusrite Octopre), really linear and quite neutral to my ears, but detailed and present, they put out a natural sounding picture of what's in front of them. On male vocals I had to EQ just a lttle to boost some high end air (10 to 12 KHz) but otherwise the track would have been just good. The self noise is really low and optimum for digital recordings.

I'm a big fan of Audio Technica, I think it's a big bang for the buck company and even their "project studio" line works really good, I think you should try them out.

I have the 4033 and its cool. I can see how some folks say theres some harshnes with the AT mics.

I noticed that sweetwater has the old Rhode NT1 (the white/silver looking model) for $169.00 I'm tempted to grab that as I heard thats a pretty cool mic for male vocals, very smoothe ??...great price though!

the nickel looking NT1a is the upgraded version of the NT1 for $199.00 (not sure how that one has been rated)

some will say that the studio projects C1 is a great mic for around $200.00 (I read some great reviews on that mic though havent heard it on my voice)

I've had the Studio Projects B1 for a week.
I haven't touched my 4050 since.
I'm almost sorry the B1 is only $80. It makes it hard to take seriously, but I bet you'd choose it over any number of AT mics in a side by side comparison.
