New isn't the word I'd use to describe these machines. The high end just got an 8% speed increase...woohoo.

dual-layer dvd doesn't excite me all that much either.

I agree. G5s are still great machines, but I'm underwhelmed by these improvements.

It doesn't stop me from wanting one, though.

Whew, other than instantly losing about $500 in value, it looks like my dual 2.5Ghz isn't on the "nearly obsolete" list yet...!

Did you see Apple's claim that the dual 2.7 gHz can run 199 simultaneous reverbs in Logic!?!? And the dual 2.0 can still run 182.

That's dang impressive...can anybody (lwilliam?) give me an idea if that is anywhere in the ballpark of how many d-verbs/realverbs/other verbs that a dual 2.5 can run in PT LE?

That is some serious horsepower, fer sher. I may have to finally let go of my trusty B&W G3 and get one of these suckers...

Later and good day,

Thanks, H! Great thread...exactly the kind of real-world info I was looking for.
Now, what can I do for my wife that will make her demand that I go to the Apple store this instant and get the dual 2.7 and a 23" cinema display...

Thanks, again.

Let's not get to excited...yet... Pro Tools LE does not take "full" advantage of dual processors like Logic, DP, etc.

they failed to mention the session specs. do you know that 24bit consumes 50% more cpu resources than 16bit and stereo consumes 100% more than mono? but even then, assuming those are 16bit mono reverbs, that would translate into about 66 stereo 24bit reverbs, which is impressive. given that protools only uses one cpu, one could guess that such beast could run about 30 stereo reverbs in protools using 24bit/44.1kHz session.

i don't need that many. i would be happy with ten super-quality reverbs and could mix with less

Here's a clue - you'll get very sore jaw muscles...
