Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Hey,
thought you guys might enjoy this thread on another forum. Hope it isn't bad form to post a link here. A bunch of different mixes of the same song with a lot of discussion. An excellent song as well imo. I checked out her website, she's a really great songwriter. Awhile back I submitted a tune for people to mix. It was a pretty so-so instrumental, but it would cool to see more of that stuff here if people were into it. I learned a lot reading that other thread. bp |

Rogerio,
Yes, the server seems to be down right now. Should be back up soon though, hopefully tonight. -Roy |
Re: Mac Mixes!!!!!!!!
Thanks GORILLA !!!
It was truly a wonderful night. On that piece there were 75 singers, and they were that tight the entire night !!! I still have chills. It is really something to watch your children enjoy music !!! Thanks again !!! Let's keep the music coming !!! Take Care, Gene |
Re: Mac Mixes!!!!!!!!
Hey guys, I recently graduated from a recording school, and my first project is for a band called The Things out of Baltimore, MD. They cover classic 60s psychedelic songs, and have asked me to mix their album. They recorded 15 songs, and so far I have mixed 8. I would love some feedback if you care to listen.
The Things! They gave me a few albums to listen to including such bands as The Electric Prunes and The Small Faces to get a feel for what they wanted. So keep this 'sound' in mind when listening to my mixes. Thanks! P.S. The songs were recorded 24/44.1 and the MP3s are 256kbps |

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Minmax....."Copycat" has a good drive to it! And YEP..had the music already, but -28 days later- really inspired that tune!

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
minmax, Thanks for listening. The kids are from 15 - 18. The piano was a bit up front due to the size of the room and location of the piano. I had mics isolated on the piano, but the room mics picked up a lot of it also. I used Neumann 184's in ORTF and the piano was VERY close to the kids.
The 184's are not mine, so I am not familiar with their characteristics, so I have a question. Periodically the mics emitted a rumbling-popping noise. I had 25 feet of Mogami cable directly into my 002. I had other mics going into the 002 and they did not have this noise. Any ideas on why the noise ? At one point it almost sounded like fluttering. Is it possible both have problems, or did I do something wrong ? Thanks again !!! Take Care, Gene |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Here's a fresh track to add to your playlist. We did all the recording with 001 of course. The drums were done in the same room.

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Hi Gene, well the kids did a great job. I'm no pro but I heard that fluttering effect and this is what I think: it's the room not the cables or the mics. When distant miking large ensembles or any sound source the room sound gets mixed in. I'm thinking the stage was wood and elevated and the reflections from the floor caused some phasing issues. The room sound we hear in your recording has that fluttering sound, not the direct piano sound or the choir's initial sound. So I think it was the acoustics of the room that caused that unwanted effect. Maybe you could mute one channel at a time to check phasing issues. Don't get me wrong there isn't huge phasing issues in the recording, I'm just saying maybe you could improve it, or it may be too late because once you get the room sound in you can't get it out. But I'm sure everyone appreciated the recording. Once again the kids were awesome!

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Hi Darren the song sounds great, recording and mixing-good job. Only thing I would have done -this is personal taste- add some ambience to the drums. Little reverb on the snare and maybe bus the whole kit and add a touch of reverb to the whole kit to make it sit better in the mix. You might like that tight sound tho... Like I said just a matter of taste.
Fa's Garden- What can I say? Pro-fessional. Great musicianship, great recording, great arrangement. I'll get to that level one day-Hopefully! Tuvan |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Tuvan,
You may not be a pro, but I do believe you know your stuff. You described the room to a tee ! This was my first choral recording a learning process indeed. Thank you so much ! Take Care, Gene |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
minmax, thanks for listening. My first mix was so heavy with verb that I may have gone too far the other way, but yes I am going for that tighter sound just didn't want to wash it out. Drums are so hard to get the way it is in one's head but I just got a box of new mics including a d112 for the kick (was using a md421) so I going to try on some other tracks.
The more critical the feedback the more I can improve. thanks! for more songs we've done in the studio with 001 go to : www.cyberdreamstudios.com/mp3.htm I'm going to take and post photos today. |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
I'm posting this song for valeri until he finds a server (courtesy of Brian/DaBasstard). I just listened and it's an excellent song and overall production, IMO.

Re: Mac Mixes!!!!!!!!
Hard rock biker anthem song I've been working on with the help of some talented musicians from the
Chicago, IL USA area. This song is being posted on the Outlaws Motorcycle Club national web site. The singer and backup singer are with a band called Holy Moses. Outlaw biker Perry Schober wrote the song played the guitars. I played bass and engineered the recording on my Digi 002 system. Outlaws Forever |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
minimax,
'Separation Anxiety' is killer...I like the guitar sounds. All I would suggest, is that I wanted to hear more bottom end (and drums), especially on the overdrive guitar chord parts. Maybe the guitars are up a tad too much there... but the song kicks, and I really did enjoy it. -Roy |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
GORILLA,
'Infected with Rage' lives up to it's title... Sheesh, I was almost scared about halfway through...It could've been on the '28 Days' soundtrack.(great movie, wasn't it?). Good job...very creative. -Roy |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Mr.Seven/Darren,
A very nice production on 'Goodbye'. Good blend of instruments throughout, and the song builds well. Good job on the mix too. Thanks for the listen... -Roy |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Gene Backlin,
I tell you, I really enjoyed 'Hallelujah'. The singers really sang this well (including your daughter, huh?... ). They were very tight as a choral group, and even the accompanyist (pianist) was impressive. Good performance by all, including your recording of it. thanks for letting me listen, Gene... -Roy Tito, 'Slamzuki' is cool...you never know what's coming next... ...Reason is great, isn't it? jj, I finally heard 'get away'... great presence and dynamics on those guitars...strong mix... I think I like '?????' best of these 3 songs, though. I definitely like that title... ~Roy |

Re: Mac Mixes!!!!!!!!
Hi Gorilla,
Checked out the "Lost Time Studio" song "OutLaws Forever." It rocks! But, now i have a question that you might be able to help me with, please. As I listen to submitted mixes I notice that some are louder than others. When I do a mix in PTLE I can apply a limiter on the Master fader before bounce down and raise the quiter sounds up to the point that all dynamic range is gone. This will make the mix much louder (like OutLaws Forever). If I do not use a Limiter and just bounce the mix as it is(with all tracks recorded as hot as possible and the master fader up as much as possible without clipping) the result is a quiter (not as loud at the same setting on the volume knob), but dynamics are intact. It seems the difference is the unLimited mix causes the listener to have to turn up there stereo player more to match the volume of a song like Outlaws.. Is this so bad? When all tracks are loud, hard driving guitar, bass and drums it may not be such a big concern for dynamic range and the applied limiting (or whatever else is used to boost the db). It also appears to be the "trend" to make mixes as loud as possible for the "Radio Wars." I just want to make sure I am not overlooking something in my procedures. If it can be louder and preserve the dynamic range i would like to know how. Thanks for your time and opinion! See "RUNAWAY" @ http://www.theevolutionband.com/thee...musicpage.html |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
yeah Roy
I thought I was hearing more stuff than last time I heard it. you da man |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Hey there, Sir archtop...haven't heard from you in a while...those boys keeping you busy?
|
Re: Mac Mixes!!!!!!!!
Hey Ping Pong your tune "Runaway" sounds great!!! I wouldn't worry about your MP3's volume, if you take your mixes to a Mastering engineer I know they can give you more volume and keep most of those dynamics!! It's kinda like a trade-off ....more volume less dynamics..more dynamics...less volume. I guess many of us are trying to find the ultimate middle spot ...LOUD and DYNAMIC!!
There's many ways to raise up volumes than just the limiter...>.>..comps/EQ's.... The "Outlaws Forever" tune was done by Perry and Losttime Studios |
Re: Here\'s mine
Gorilla and others -- Thanks for the comments about the Outlaws Forever song. Gorilla -- I am interested in how you do your drums, I am looking for a new way to do them. I previously used a Boss DR 770 drum machine, but am limited by a stereo mix and unbalanced outs. I have recently been playing with loops and one hit samples in Live 3.0. I am looking for other options where I can ultimately put the bass and snare on seperate tracks etc. Battery doesn't seem as viable as it could be since it a pain in the butt to get individuals outs. Thanks.
As far as the mix loudness on Oulaws Forever. First, you want to get the signals as hot as possible "on tape" without distorting. When recording, be sure you see a plenty of yellow on the faders. When mixing, get the drums as loud as possible w/o distorting even if you go over 0 db and then balance the rest of the instruments accordingly. Don't look at the numbers on the faders go by ear as to what sounds right. I put a Bombfactory 1176 compressor (it came with my original Digi 001 factory) on the singer's voice to get it to cut above the mix. Finally, I strapped, across the master faders, a Waves C4 (3b setting) and then a Waves L2 with the limiter set a -1db and the threshold set at about 7. |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
GORILLA- one word; Counseling, it does wonders. I'm pretty sure they have medicine for that, too. Nice production... freaky song, but nice production.
Valeri- good stuff |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Eddie Hulse,
I listened to some of 'Norelco Girls' and then the 'Sea of Green' song 'Everywhere she goes'...it's a good song, nice and raw. I like the singer too...I do suggest that you convert the 'Sea of Green' songs from WAV(29mb) to MP3s, for downloading sake. thanks for posting... -Roy |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Yes Roy have been very busy, am anxious to hear your new stuff,I'll try to

Thanks for the input Roy.
I had forgotten the Sea Of Green stuff was not MP3'd, will have to take care of that ASAP. I was having some weird "effects" happening to tunes that I converted, have different conversion software now, hopefully this will take care of the problem. Ed Barefoot Studio |
