Hi Guys - my first music post on the DUC, so take it easy

This is stuff I've played and recorded on my own, but as you will see it's meant for a full band, which will happen soon. I'm interesed in knowing what you think of the 3 promo tracks (or any paticular one) on my site.

They're on the homepage under "quick listen" - www.ritchspence.co.uk

The first track (Cutthroat Cool) was done before I bought BFD, and you can really tell the difference. The drums on the second track are BFD. Interested in any feedback on the songs, the mix, the sounds & use of effects......I'm pretty much learning as I go so would appreciate any tips on making these better.

Cheers

Hey Rieces Pieces,

I took the link to your myspace page and the songs available were:

What It Is
Tell Me How
Rollin
Drop

Is there supposed to be one called 'Finally' on there? If not, which song were you asking about?

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Hey Derek,

Demon circus? Aren't the regular circuses scary enough!??!?

Interesting mix with the left/right panning of different parts. Kind of gives the 'multi-ring' feeling of a circus. The bass seemed a little buried to me. Overall I thought it was well done.

The only other things that occurred to me were: The 'ringmaster' voice sounds too clean. Maybe some lo-fi effect to make it sound like he's talking through a megaphone? As for sound effects - maybe some crowd sounds (cheering, gasping, etc.) in response to the ringmaster? And maybe too cliche, but maybe some of that calliope/organ sound in the transitions?

Also, FYI - the lyrics you have posted on that page don't match up exactly with the recorded version.

Ritch...listened to all three...good songs, all...I really like your vocals...very nice piano work too (what piano are you playing?).....The best song to me is 'Go Home'...great chorus on that, which I'de like to hear more of in the arrangement (everything should center around that, IMO). I also really like 'Cutthroat'.

Nice job on all three...tons of potential...thanks for the listen. -Roy

Hi Roy, thanks a lot for taking the time to listen and for the input - much appreciated.

The piano I used on the tracks is a Korg SP-100 stage piano (with a busted damper input, making for some very interesting mid-take problems!....)

Glad you like 'Go Home' - probably the most original sounding of the three I think. Often in structuring songs, I may think it's a good idea to, say, miss out the second chorus & stick a middle 8 in their instead. As you mentioned though, sometimes this leads to their being too few instances of the hook line.

Thanks again, Ritch

Hi Ritch...

I do think for 'Go Home', the chorus/hook should be in there more, and I say this because it's a great chorus, IMO. Here are my hopefully humble thoughts on the song overall...

The chorus is the exceptionally cool part that the listener is glad to hear return. The intro is great...the verses are very good and support the chorus well, but I would cut the second verse in half, and go back into the chorus there. The slow-down middle part, while very pretty and done well, is an entity in itself and tends to drag down the killer mood you've set up prior to it. This may be cool live once the song is established, but for now I'de either remove it or figure out how to keep it in the same uptempo feel.....basically make it a bridge. I would also double the chorus at the end.

I know that you may be set on it as it is, but from an objective writer/listener's standpoint, this is what I'de advise.

Best of luck with it..... -Roy

Re: Stargazer

Thanks again for your input Roy.

I must say I've not got any plans to re-record this track in the very near future. In the long run, I definately hope to have the oppurtunity to redo all my tracks in a better facility - so who knows what will have happened to the strutures by that point......In brief, I agree with you about a double chorus at the end + a return to the chorus prior to the middle eight. I'm reluctant to change the second verse as it's one of my favourites bits personally (where the BVs come in).

I'm just completing a new song, a funky guitar track, which I'll post when I'm done.

By the way, I've just been on your site to listen to some music. I've just been picking tracks at random though! 'Of madness and magic' is a lovely piece - the guitar (well, mandolins yes?) are sweet.

Also listened to 'Sacred and profane dancer', with the great atmospheric intro. In fact, both these two sound like really good music for film soundtracks....Yet to come across any singing yet, but I'll persevere

cheers, Ritch

CYE,
Thanks for the comments, I also feel that the bass is buried a little as well, excpecialy on the intro. I also need to edit the vocals to match up the endings of phrases, but i will get around to it. I like the suggestion of a lo-fi plug on the ringmaster. As for the synth sounds, i wanna be able to reproduce the sound live so i will probably stay away from them. thanks for listening!!!

Some new Tom Rothman

TOM ROTHMAN - PRE-PRODUCTION

Yep, Tom Rothman is back! Can never get rid of this guy (kidding, it is great to work with him always) That's right, Tom Rothman is back in the thought process for the next CD. Tonight he came by to do some pre-production stuff and laid down some of the new tunes. Then the crazy cracker busted out a song written for me. Titled "Dirty Deed's" it is PERFECT. Should be easy enough to understand for those who know me and all that has happened in my life this past, well, seemingly almost 2 years now, but DAMN it was unexpected for him to bust this out. I think it will be great when it is all tightened up and done right. So we should start tracking in a few weeks. Right now we are ironing out details and thoughts on new stuff to shoot for. Going for 10 songs on this I believe. Should be pretty sweet at the end. We plan on taking this one to Sterling Sound to Master when it is all done.

The rough of the song is first on the playlist right now on my MySpace

Stay Tuned!

Follow my Studio link and it will start playing when you get there. I really enjoy the chorus part. Just way too fitting.

Latest Stuff...

I scored a little indie movie recently and wrote this piece for a 'dark and circus-like' scene in it.....very short(about 1:30)...mainly dry cellos and brass. -Roy

Re: Latest Stuff...

Hey Roy. that's some pretty spooky stuff! Seriously though, sounds like it will suit the scene very nicely indeed - the incessant dark 'marching' feel punctuated with the chromatic run downs....The 'middle eight' section is also cool for breaking it up, don't know if there was a middle section in the scene differing from the main bit?

Instrumental rock- please critique mix

Here is the first song that I have mixed from a recent recording of my band. There are still a couple of fader moves i'd like to make, but I've heard it so many time I need some fresh ears. When we recorded this we wanted it to sound like we do live. We had all of the instruments setup as if we were playing a show, in our basement. (all the amps behind the drums) It was very frustrating for all of us to try to play without any mistakes through out every song. There are definatley some minor mistakes (stick clicks, muffed notes, etc) We just wanted it to be a little raw sounding, we did not overdub or punch anything in. We setup a MS stereo pair in the room to get a very live sound.

I am fairly happy with the way it turned out given the sub par gear we used. Mackie VLZ plus two on the 001 for mic preamps, presonus Firestaion for extra ad/da. Beta 52 on the kick, 3 SM57's for the snare, guitar left and bass, AKG c1000 for guitar right, 2 CAD M179 for the toms. For the MS pair we used a CAD e100 for the middle and a studio projects B3 set to omni for the side.

Buisness Trip to Hell:

Please give me some honest feedback.

Thanks
Ryan

Re: Instrumental rock- please critique mix

Wow.. I really like this.. reminds me of No Knife or Cancer Conspiracy. You've got the live sound going, but I think you can still tighten up the kit some without losing that sound.

I'm only listening on my iMac speakers, so it's hard to tell, but I think you need to work on the levels of your snare track (especially in the beginning).. I like that it's not slammed through a compressor, but what that means for you is some extra work on the faders.. IMO The kick could be brought up to sit above the bass.. but maybe that's just my speakers.. The toms could use some warmth, which may be hard to accomlish given that there is an overwhelming amount of the drums coming through your ambient mics.

Also the guitars seem drowned out (by the cymbals) a bit in some of the beginning parts..

the MS matrix lends a very realistic live sound... i like it..

Compositionally, the 7/8 part (after the break) gets a bit boring to me.. but hey.. You didn't ask about that..

here's to math rock.

Re: Instrumental rock- please critique mix

Like it a LOT!!! I'm not an expert. If I was mixing, I'd bring the background vocals down a little so the lead singer was more out front in the chorus. I thought the intro was a bit busy with the guitar/keyboard both playing many notes, and would either use a few pauses or held chords to give the melody more time to develope into the final exciting mid to finish. Love the bass line. Maybe just a hint more bottom to let song feel fuller. For what its worth... I really do like the song!

Hi,

Anyway, just though I'd let you all know that my second single is now available on traxsource. It features some great remixes, including a Richard Earnshaw Re-edit..

The track is called Butterfly and features vocals by Robina.. It has a great summer vibe. Why not get it for your ipod while your chillin on the beach this summer, and obviously for your DJ sets...

Hot on the heels of "Point of View", Fresh 27 brings us "Butterfly", a record that seems purpose built for summer! Big thanks to the talented ElektroOrganik on this one; their remix transformed the record into a bona fide anthem and also forms the basis for Richard Earnshaw's superb beefed-up edit. Also included is a slightly dubbier version from newcomers Twisted Rhythm (Refunkt Records) and a very chunky electro-fied mix from rising star Noiseburst. Fresh 27's classic laidback original makes up the package.

Here's a link

Thanks

Hello everyone..

Been awhile since posting here. Our band has recently finished our EP and it's being pressed now.
Although its never a good idea to record, mix, master and produce your own band we gave it a shot and are pretty happy with the results. (lots of test cd's went into the garbage for sure :-).

Im not completly happy with the recording but we ran out of time so..... check it out if you can.
