MikeD -

I forgot to ask in my last post.

I really liked the warm deep snare drum tone on "Just Walk Away". What are the stats - type and size of drum, head, tuning, mic,
compression,type of room, etc.?

BigRedButton/Jackson,
I finally took some minutes and listened to your recent stuff. "rusty justice..." hehe, nice lyric in 'Wrecking Ball', and nice change in the middle too. In 'Perfect Mistake', my only suggestion would only be that Robert's voice could come up a touch IMHO... So that's you on drums, eh? Good job. Is that a pad/synth snare during the verses, or did you just program it in?

Of all these songs though, my favorite has to be Kim Krenik's 'Healing Child'. It's really, really nice (Check it out guys).

Now, I'm listening through the flu, but sounds great to me... Keep up the good work, Bro.

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Hey BigRedButton,

My drummer's snare is a mystery, at least to me. He got it in jr high (he is in his mid thirties now) and the snare is a piece of junk, literally. I have been begging him to change for years now. He is just to cheap to do so. That being said, he does a good job tuning it. I had him change to a Remo Powerstroke head and tune it up pretty tight. I think he is using a 50 strand snare. I mic'd it up with a Shure Beta 57 just over the rim pointed towards the center of the drum. The snare itself is somewhere in the neighborhood of four to five inches in depth and I believe 13" in diameter. It is a standard metal snare like you would get on any beginners kit. I think the Remo head and his tuning really make the big difference. Also, the reverb on the snare helped warm it up quite a bit as well (D-verb). Thanks for listening! DR.JOHN,
Your songwriting is really strong excellent tunes Loved Pauline and Stay with me.Production is fantastic. My only critque would be to lose the word Darling in the song Stay with Me.I think that word is dated and also is not easily sung to sound contemporary with your song.I think your song would be even stronger to simply sat Stay With Me and nothing in between until your next Lyrical Phrase.Who's this guy on here that said he listened to most of the 13 pages on this string but has only heard one thing worth hearing.Probably the same huy that through Bostons more than afeeling in the trash can.I love your stuff and will post some of mine soon.Keep crankin. Thanks for your encouragement! I'm actually re-recording all the vocal tracks this week. Rob is coming up from California (where I used to live)to record 7 more songs, and he's asked me to sing all the lead tracks.

Yep, that's me on drums on all those tracks except the punk band. That is a synth drum loop on the verses of Perfect Mistake.

MikeD -
Thanks for the info. You gotta love those old metal snares - Great job capturing such a classic sound!

Stut5,

Thank you for your comments and suggestions. I was beginning to think nobody was interested in giving us a listen. I agree with you that the word "darlin" is a bit funky. Lyrics are our weak spot. Hey, I'm a surgeon, not a poet. The other interesting thing is that our singer doesn't speak a word of English, I have to coach him a bit, but I think he does a fantastic job. Our keyboards are kinda old, Roland JV1080 and D70. Drums are midi, as is bass (ha! the drums are out of a Roland PMA-5!!) Our stuff is all a bit dated, as we are all pushin' 40 or already there. Can't run away from your style, unless you are a real pro. Again, thanks for your kind words, and let me know if you have any more questions, but I warn you, our production facilities/methods are pretty low-tech!

"he's asked me to sing all the lead tracks."
Wise move...this should make good songs even better, given your superior voice(in my opinion).

My first time in the producers chair (except for on my own music). Usually we only record our own music but this weekend my baby brother (21) came up and recorded a song. The song has alot of energy... luckily they don't know much at all about recording in a studio which allowed me to produce the entire track. A fun and new experiance for me. Let me know what you think of my mix. (I already know the song is good )

oslpchris,
For what it's worth my opinion is the vocals are a little to upfront in the mix. I think if you'd have backed them off a little it would have achieved a more balanced sound.

thanks for your input guys. First of all, yea I agree but instead of bringing the vocals back I think the basic bass, drums and guitar could probably come up a bit. That should even everything out. Those guys are a bunch of 21 year olds (one of them is my brother... bass/backgrounds). I only used 4 tracks for vocals, 2 parts w/ one stack each.

As for Outer Space Love Project... Yea, that's my band. Thanks for the kind words about our music too. I did write alot of this stuff. We're hoping to have our album out by the end of the year. Thanks again. (Jellyfish rules! )

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

oslpchris,
I like the mix pretty much as is. Good song, great guitars, good production. The only thing that sounds necessary to touch is the bass, not so much up in volume as in bass frequency..... just my objective and humble opinion.
But, I say that with the given that this is a well-performed great song, and that you did a great job producing.

commenting on the songs at mp3.com OSLP in particular.. Supergirl

Please don't take this the wrong way.... but the mix/production needs help. It's fine for the typical band/song and gets the message across fine.... but IMNSHO this tune is crying for shiny well balanced kick ahss drum slammin' puch me in the face with those cutting edge vocal arrangement type of treatment. I can hear so much wanting to break through. Sorry..... just when I hear tune/arrangement that makes me green with envy I can't help myself. Take it the next level, man, and gold is yours!

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Mr. Seven I'm a little confused (and don't get me wrong i've read alot of your tips for ProTools users and completely respect your opinion) I'm just confused as to whether or not you're talking about OSLP's Supergirl? Or if you're talking about Skyline Fracture's (my brother's band) Come To Show) If it's about Supergirl then MAN DO I AGREE WITH YOU!! Believe it or not we recorded that song in '94... way before I had protools. So the mix is a little ragged... it will be remixed, and probably alot of it re-recorded, before we release it.

If you're talking about Come To Show... I'm gonna have to disagree.. i think that with a couple of minor tweaks and that song will sound incredible. (also my NSHO ) (also thanks Roy I always appreciate yo're opinion since you started this thead in the first place... ) Now for the bad news...

I'm having server problems so the Come To Show is no longer available for download. Hopefully i'll have a new link I can edit that post with soon. Thanks everyone... I knew I could count on you guys for some truely gourmet food for thought.

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Chris, Here's what happened , I was reading all the good posts about your stuff and just clicked on the first mp3 link to your stuff...

After about half an hour of listening to all you tunes, I started reading up the list to find your original post. That's when I d/l "come to show" and it hit me that I may have commeted on the wrong songs.. .. And your absolutely right about it, a few minor tweaks here and there and your fine. Once I discovered my error I prefaced my reply with exactly which songs I was refering. By that time I knew I was probably diggin' myself a hole but I knew they were your tunes so I left the post as a compliment to the songs.

I was really wanting to know re: Come to show, what and how you got that guitar sound. I've been experimenting on trying to get that Linkin Park sound and your's is got the same tonality. If you can clue me in, I'll be greatful! .... and yes, the difference between the two mixes as well as the genres is night and day! BTW I hear some ELO (Jeff Lynn) in your tunes and I'm ready to send you my CC# to buy that CD when it's pressed. Love to hear it re-recorded rather than remixed if you can still get that vocal magic. Best of luck to ya!

oslpchris 03-11-2002 09:57 PM

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

haha.. cool.. Guitar sounds in Come to Show are fairly simple. Most of the rhythm guitar was a Les Paul I think we used my Paul.. one of the guitars could be a Hamer but we were having some intonation problems with it so I'm pretty sure we used the LP thru Mike's Peavy 5150 head and Marshall 4X12 (2 tracks one semi-clean and one very gritty) panned hard left and right. Mic'd with an SM57, nothing sounds better on guitars imo. Most of the guitars were compressed 6:1 w/ about a -7 threshold (or about 2 lights on the led glowing ) then throw in a Telecaster and a Ibanez Talsman (w/ all sorts of wishy washiness) for a little spice. Of course, I'm sure as most of you know.. the key to a good guitar sound is the guy plucking the strings.

JON! Jellyfish?? Never heard of them! It's a small web after all... ya busted me. How've ya been brutha?!

Oh and Darren, I definately took what you said about Supergirl as a compliment (at least the green with envy part).. once my feeble little brain figured out what you were talking about! Love ELO... I bought the album Time when I was in high school (ooo, just dated myself). I've been a huge fan ever since. As for your credit card... keep it in your pocket for a while. We've been trying to finish this record for about 4 years now. After numerous hard drive crashes (I learned the back up your material lesson the hard way. We lost about 8 songs... gone... poof!) We're about halfway done with the record.. none of the MP3's on the mp3.com site are current. They're just there as teasers. I'm really proud of the new versions.. but we're keeping them locked in a vault until we're ready to conquer *cough* the world

bookmark - www.outerspaceloveproject.com it's down right now because our server host just bought a new house and is in the process of moving but it should be up again soon. Alright, I'll shut up now.

Simon,
Good stuff. I thought 'Breathe' was especially strong. Great tune. Good vocals and mix. Wasn't sure about the sound of the piano when it's striking single notes though. Sounds a bit like a 'prepared piano'. Not sure if that's what you're going for. Overall that song is very strong.

I liked 'Falling' also, although I thought the vocals were a bit dry. I like the drums and the little bits of acoustic guitar in 'These Days'

Overall very fine. Done on 001?

Yet another reason to return to Dublin.

Cheers,
Mark

Mike,
Hey guy! Good stuff! 'Teach Me'. Crissie Hynde watch out. Great tune. Took me back a bit.

I like the way 'Wanna Know' starts. Well mixed. The guitars are back, drums sound good, then the main hook starts and the guitars come forward. Cools. Drums continue to sound good. I can see this song being fun live.

Cheers,
Mark

Hi Mark,

Thanks for listening. Glad you like the tunes. They are quite a bit more rocky when live. I think my next attempt to record the band will try and capture an element of that energy.

The piano in all tracks is actually an electric Roland piano, which our player uses live. The single notes you are referring to had actually distorted, maybe that gives it a preset kind of sound!!!

MikeD,

Loved the first track, great mix, great clarity and sense of space for the excellently recorded vox tracks. I'm not a real fan of the Chrissy voice, but I really appreciated the production.

Sofine -

Excellent! I loved "Falling" - really beautiful song, great vocal recording. I think the band has a neat approach to melody and chord changes. I hear some Squeeze/Crowded House influence in there.

I thought the drums could have been bigger in "Something's gotta Give". The cymbals are out front, but the drum shells aren't talking to me.

Good work. Keep it coming.
