Mbox issues - perpetual LE 5.2 crashes

Just set up a small rig at my home:

Ti G4 667/1GB ram/PT LE 5.2
PT Mbox/LE 5.2/80GB Glyph companion drive
MOTU Fastlane USB 2x2 midi interface
Kensington USB turbo mouse
Dr. Bott 3 port USB hub

I have been getting random errors Type 1, 2 and 3 forcing PT to quit. I have shuffled the USB devices around in various combinations thinking it might be USB related to no avail.

Anyone else experience this problem with a similar configuration?

Digi, any thoughts?

Hi John, looks like a really sweet setup, except for the mouse Do you have access to a Pro Mouse? If so, give it a go... Also, try a different usb port on the 667.

How's the companion drive? Does it have the same body of the mbox?

I'm going to give the Pro Mouse a shot tonight.

The companion drive is cool. Nearly identical body and color - a bit bigger length wise than the mbox. They nest together nicely side by side.

Whats the companion drive all about.

Is it a USB hard drive.

If so, is it fast enough for use with audio or do you use for storage only?

Is it a Digidesign bit of gear?

I hope to hear from you soon

Mark:

I don't own one, but was looking at them too so can answer your questions

It's a Firewire drive, it's definitely fast enough to use for audio, it comes in 3 sizes (40/80/120 gigs), it's made by Glyph.......and you can check it out here

Looks pretty cool to me, although a bit pricey for what it is. Then again, Glyph are known for amazing customer support - so it might be worth the extra dosh. Still haven't decided what I'm gonna do yet........

just a word about 1 to 3 error type on Mac. As I observed (Gestalt etc.) it appears in memory overflows and/or continued memory dumpings. In clearer words : simply an app that ran out of its memory in RAM. So I doubt it could be mouse-related only.

See if PTLE is ok without killing the mouse
, if not see if your clipboard (often causing 1 to 3 r-type since OS 9) is not filled by a gigantic amount of sound or even an odd stored matter (e.g. RTF, QuickTime multilayered cut, or even HTML). Try working with an empty clipboard.
You can almost empty it by selecting a "standard" Finder object like a file name.

One of the best features is its size - small enough to bring between home and studio.

Re: Mbox issues - perpetual LE 5.2 crashes

Thanks Yelhahc and others.

I am interested in a backup drive for Mbox on an old iMac.

I understand that USB drives transfer data at around 700kb per second.

I calculate that this would be too slow (is around 130 kbps [mono] a good rule of thumb for 24bit 44.1?). Thats around 5 or 6 mono tracks.

If so, a USB (and the old iMacs only have USB) hard drive would only be for storage of audio.

Any ideas appreciated? Brands? Speeds?

Seeya
