Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Doc, the song lovekiller sounds like bands that I'm used to recording! haha. I used an Oktava Mk-213 in the past for vocals until i bought my 2 rode nt1's and latest my groove tubes gt67. I never thought to use my e609 for screams though, that's a good idea. I recorded some screams with the groove tubes yesterday and it sounded awesome. (also a good trick, use the Lo-fi plug-in, put the noise at about .1, distortion around 2.0, and saturation just one or two clicks over, i think it's .1 or .2, and it makes for an awesome distorted sound for screams).

and Roy! Lovers turned out awesome. Had a very epic sound to it.

I'm currently in the process of recording 2 bands right now. One of them the drummer is pretty bad to say the least (took 9 hours to track 5 songs with mediocre results) but the mix is coming out fairly decent for the skill i was working with. And i'm also recording a band who's singer is an actor (3 years in The Young And The Restless, was in Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman, Swing Kids, etc.) he's got potential on his voice but something just hasn't been clicking for me. we'll see how it sounds.

Bret, I tend to just push the pre's harder and get a natural distortion, but I know the trick you are talking about. Thanks! The 609 breaks up by itself so I was good to go.

I think I might be recording some screams today. I'll have to try the 609

Roy,

Thumbs up for "Lovers" Very well done and the vocalist has a wonderful voice. Perfect for that song too.

I thought the drums sounded just a tad thin, myself. Someone else commented on how good they sounded. *shrug* Whatever floats your boat I suppose.

All in all tho, great production on "Lovers"

SSR...and BretFarewell...
Thanks very much.....and I agree with you(SSR) about the percussion...it was done about 3-4 years ago with some of the first samples I had collected...I'll eventually redo it, but I elected to go ahead and mix it as is for now with Anna's new vocals, because I'm busy with other newer stuff.

Hi!

Please listen to the song and give me some comments if you like.
The instruments are:

Drums
1st Bass (clean and dist)
2nd Bass (clean and dist)
Guitars (clean and dist)
and a bit of piano sound sometimes...

Hymen
This music has to be played loud, so turn it up!

Thanks for listening
Have a nice day

I originally posted a version of this song a couple of years back when I first started using Pro Tools. I started recording it in Cakewalk, then exported those tracks to PT (good ol' 5.3.1). Since then a lot has changed. In fact, I re-recorded most of the tracks and added some new things too. All in all, I think it's a much better production now (the guitar solo at the end really rounded things off too). Anyway, check it out and let me know what you guys think:

http://www.myspace.com/metoniccycle

BTW - the sound quality will be much better if you download the MP3 file instead of listening to the stream file.

Thanks,

rockrev

rockrev,
Sounds very good...nice choices on the elements of the production...the drums seem a little repetitive after a while...some very minor changeup would do wonders there...my main suggestion is that the end solo sounds slightly buried by the overdrive background guitar(I assume). The solo itself(and it's level) are good...I would just pull the background back.
Good job on the song overall.

Hi Guys,
I have been lurking in these forums for a few years. During that time I have progressed in my recording but have a ways to go before I reach the level of some of you.
I am a drummer and work with 2 other guys who also have PTLE setups. Between the 3 of us, we have some demo projects in the works.
My gear is (Used for drum recording):
Digi002R
Yamaha 01V with ADAT Card (used for mic pres recording drums)
SM57 Snare
D112 on Kick
Sennheisser E604 on Toms
Rode NT5s overheads

With that said, I humbly ask for critiques of my drum sound on this recording.
BTW, I have the overheads panned at 50L 50R rather than 100L 100R. This just seems to make the drums "fit" in the mix more. Is that typical, or maybe I am just covering up another problem.

Thanks in advance.

Chris,
I really like it...this can be an excellent pop song...great melody...I would basically repeat what you have in this snippet(verse/chorus) twice, and add a short bridge before a strong ending.
Very good job so far, in my opinion...how's it coming now? Sorry it took me a while to listen.

alright everyone, I have a new band for you to listen to. The drummer was HORRIBLE, so please keep that in mind. I took as much time with him as they could afford, had to do a lot of editing and it still sounded sloppy but I did what I could with it. The band didn't have a big budget so some of the things were rushed, but overall it's not too bad. time for the criticism!

haha trust me, after about the 8th hour of tracking drums (and taking up all of thier time) I was about ready to just record the drums for them, haha. One thing I liked about this recording was the bass sound. Amazing what a little $25 Korg distortion pedal can do (I have yet to find one that sounds better).

and bubba/roy thank-you for the comments as well. I need to get a server up so I can load higher vesions, or maybe use you send it?

The band I'm recording right now decided to put up some unmixed, un-autotuned, pretty much un-everything versions up, but it'll give you an idea of their direction (perhaps you guys can have some advice on the mixing of this one. I'll probably be starting that today)

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Doug,

Nice song and great instrumentation on it. I think the kick is a little out of balance volumewise with everything else. The only other problem I hear at all is overcompression. I can hear those compressors pumping away in there.

Seems like a -lot- of people are overcompressing everything. Including the pro studios. I can understand the non-professionals making this sort of mistake but, I don't understand why the pros think this sounds good. I guess I'm just overly picky and like my music to 'breathe' instead of squishing the life out of it. =)

Mpeg audio artifacts in mp3's with bit rates < 256kbps drive me nuts too, but I seem to be the only one that hears those too.

But I digress.. lol

Overall, nicely done, Doug - just needs a few tweaks and it'll be even better.

Joz,
Sounds good, agreed that it sounds a tad squashed though. Honestly NOT liking the snare tone for the song. Seems a bit too open and basketball hoopish. May be my crappy ***** computer speakers though? Not sure though. Will listen at home. Seems too squashed though,a nd I understand that it is PRE-mix. I would bring the guitars up a notch too.

Good tones though...

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

clausiii,
Cool song...good job on the vocal and most of the production is really good...one suggestion, is that the early overdrive guitar seems overly thin to me (like where the vocal screams on the verse endings). I feel a void in those spots...It would probably feel fine if some fuller guitar(s) were added there, as they are at about 2:19. Feels much better there.
Just a suggestion, and understood that it's a very good song and effort overall, IMO.

Hey there,

I think this sounds just fine. I agree that the snare doesnt quite suit. Well for my taste anyway. I think I'd like to hear a little more crisp and stringy sound.

The production is very nice on this one. I like the heavy layered vocals and all. Sounds real good. I'm not usually a fan of much but pop these days but thats a nice tune

Ive never recorded any drums with good mics or even a good kit before but I'm hoping to start sometime soon. The guitars sound very good as well!

Doug: Track sounds cool man, I dig the vibe you have going on in it. As for the kick, when I was listening it was almost not there all together. I will have to crank it up when I get home in the studio, but I would suggest maybe bring it up just a tad. Good work on the arrangement though!

I dont think the kick is out of balance. I think when they said out of balance they meant not loud enough. I think for my tastes I'd actually crank it up a little also like Super suggested. I've always liked to hear the kick drum. I was looking at those drumsets a little while ago. Your recorded sound is really good. Could you give me a little more info on the room they were recorded in and mic placement?

I have a buddy who got one of those kits. Last time I saw him he said it sounds great! I wanted to record it sometime but I dont have the mics. I'll have to get into the drum thing soon. Also what verb are you running on the drums?
