Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Hey Roy, thanks for the listen. Sorry again about the D/Load time. Ive been trying to do something about getting some better hosting, but for now its free... Whattya gunna do, eh?

Anyway, yeah, the funny thing about that mix was, I did the song, spent about 5 or 6 hours mixing it, probably 2 or 3 days in a row on my home stereo system. (obviously not the best source).

AfterI got about what I think was the best I could have done with the musical material presented and the equipment I had, I emailed the guy to which the song belonged to, Ruby Ratzinger. He said that due to bandwidth reasons, and the amount of song files going through, he needed the song emailed to him at, get this, nothing greater than stereo mp3, 33kbps. I reply, "Hey, thats going to be a quite a bit muddy and underwater sounding, dont you think?" He says "send away!"
So I did, then he replies and tells me "The mix is a bit dirty, and rather inaudibly differentiating."

Well.. no $&$*... haha. Do a nice clean mix, and then he tells me to send him the file after its been processed through a "200ft UnderWater with no bass" plugin.

Oh well.. Thanks again for the listen.
As for the other song, I know youve heard the regular version before, I just decided to do this live cut for fun.

Re: Mac Mixes!!!!!!!!

here's another using that same setup. CHECK OUT "Small Stuff" i really need some critical comments about the mix. i know there's tuning issues and such, but all the tracks are one-taked. we could re-track and will, but how can i make this initial mix sound better? http://homepage.mac.com/vicwind1/Menu1.html BTW: my protools preferences have the conversion quality set at BETTER. the bounce to disc was done to mp3 at medium quality. is there a signifigant increase if one set protools conversion to TWEAKHEAD?

Jon Dickinson,
Just heard Fingerwolf/'softearth'...nice...very interesting synth sounds. What type of synth are you using?
thanks, Roy

Re: Newcomer to rolling out my tracks....

Hey Jon, At Roys mention of "Synth" I had to take a listen to Soft Earth. I must agree, that synth you are using for your Bass loop is really cool. I like the track a lot, but something about the portamento sound gets me at the end.

Nice track though, I really like what I heard.

Ben/Roy, thanks for the comments - the lead sound is a Pro53, which I find an excellent Prophet simulation, I'm using it more and more these days. Funnily enough, everything else on the track comes from Reason, but I bounce each track from Reason down to a 24 bit WAV and then import into PTLE so I get all those lovely sounds but without using the Reason mixer, which I reckon is 99% of what gives Reason produced tracks their distinctive sound, so I bypass that completely:-)

The bass loop is a really meaty Malstrom sound going into the Reason Vocoder at 16 bands, being modulated by a Rex loop of some indian percussion, but with the attack and decay in the vocoder tweaked a bit to give some 'surge' to the sound.

The Rhodes is the freely available 'Matt's 8 Layer Suitcase Rhodes' going through a Scream for some mild tape saturation. Nice.

I just bought the impOSCar, FM7 and also Novation V-Station after giving them a go on a friend's rig and I'm totally immersed in some sound design on all three, so I'll post something up here when I can snap out of it and use them on some compositions!

Chris,

hearing your music and your latest mix I think there is not much that I can say that you don't already know. Also I just came from a jam in my neighbourhood and my ears are somewhat numbed now. But it appears to me as if you did a retake on the bass, at least, it seems to have more tone definition of it's own, less 'overtalk' (what's the word, bleed?) through the mic. The overall sound is easier yet dynamic, less pressure and more space. That's how it sounds to me. Astonishing work in my ears, musically also.

Back to my guitar lessons but ......

Chucktoledo I tried to open your webpage but the link gave me a blanco IE screen. Hope to hear some of your music but right now I cannot open your page. Later I hope

Jon 'Fingerwolf', I really like the sound of the bass in the composition on your page. I like that in combination with the acoustic, live drums (being not midi). The progression of the chords makes sense to me, but I think you can do something about the melody from the piano. Could be a bit more developed, right now it seems like it lacks direction. Sounds are really nice, also the synth, but the song as a whole needs some more work. For a first PTLE product however it's really not bad, when talking in terms of good/bad/etc. Interesting to see what it's gonna be after some time.

It's been some time since I made any new stuff. http://www.xs4all.nl/~walterp5/Porn%20Funk.mp3 This I made for the Porn Funk contest. Midi bass, looped acoustic drums some times also midi drums (Waldorf PPG VST inst), some ducks from a cd and some guitar fragments. Just a snippet, but nice to have Rewire at least in Cubase for the moment. Any criticism is welcome. Hope to come up with some new stuff later, there are some ideas in my head and also there is a piece I'm working on. Meanwhile I'll be lurking around

Good luck all,

Walther

Walther,

The bass wasn't a retake...I posted some of the methods I used to revive it over on nikki's forum if you want to check them out (look a few posts down, the one on June 28th is the beginning post for this tune):

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

There ya go. It definitely sounds better, the bass, but this is caused by your mixing and not by a retake. Quite deceptive, maybe this says something about your skills as producer too. Comparing your mixes a, b & c there proves to be a lot possible only by different ways a mixing/mastering. You got me there ......

Walther, thanks for the feedback - you're right about the melody, I thought I'd live with it for a while and I already know which bits I think sit well and which bits basically sound like aimless noodling, so I'll be revisiting that shortly.

Interestingly enough, the drums *aren't* live - I specifically put them together and programmed them so they would sound as like a real drummer as possible, and in your case, it appears to have worked. Groove templates and such are nice in the right context, but this stuff has absolutely no quantise on it whatsoever, it's all played in from a keyboard by my fair hand and I've manually moved quite a few notes to give it the required swing.

Hey Roy, everybody, sorry about the link, I've been trying to get a direct link to a particular song, but somehow it doesn't let me. Any ways try the link below, you'll see two folders, In one I have the stuff I recorded with the guys in my latin band, and in the other folder, my attemp to Latin Jazz.

They are not mastered and need a lot of work on the mixing, the majority of the instruments were recorded in my home's family room with really poor acoustics, but I'm doing the best I can.

This is the second time I am mistaking in telling live vs midi. It was the timing and ms. before or after the beat that made me feel the drums were played live. Not quantised, indeed. Maybe I also should also play drums via keyboard and leave it unquantised. It sure works. Good to know also that one can get by with a drummodule when no real drummer is available. My music always sounds so midi.

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Roy,
Wow, that piece just oozes with feel. What are you using for drums? The compression on them gives them a nice pop. The big guitar intro is cool too. That's the best material I've heard from you yet, IMO. Are you using ambience reverb on the drums? What's your guitar chain? Hopefully you haven't already posted the details. I haven't been reading...getting hitched in one week.

As far as which mix I liked the most. B sounds more aggressive, they are both great....I think I like A a bit more.

Chris,
I am curious as to how you approached the master. Do you do stem submixes or master a complete mixdown? What software/hardware are you using?

Can I gloat?

I knew they were MIDI. They are done very well; but I just noticed the dynamics/sound were the same for each piece of drumkit, and assumed they were 'fake' drums.

Great track, put together real nice, Ive been listening to it for several days now in my playlist at work. Good Job!

Guit4brains...Joe...Thanks.......

Guit,
For drums on 'Bigfoot', I used a bunch of my own samples in ReDrum, and some on their own audio tracks. I did indeed use Ambience on the snare...so thanks again for the tip...
Chris Cavell did a great job mastering it, in my opinion. Thanks for the comments.

ChuckToledo,

I really dig the rendition of Brubeck's 'Take Five'...taking it in a seriously latin direction and totally maintaining respect for the title of the tune!

Not a bad job at all of covering the number one best selling jazz single of all time...a truly difficult task to pull off musically...being such a well known song, expectations were high for me, but you met them with this arrangement...and the interlude is very cool too!

Cheers,
Chris

Hi all,

Really diggin some of the stuff you guys put on here. I dont play in a band nor do I play any instruments, just have a little project studio and tryin to better my engineering skills. Tryin to record all types of music, dip my hand in anything that comes my way Well I have been pretty fortunate so far as recording talent goes. This jazz tune here is a musician from the group Midnight Star, and is also my instructor at school, so I got pretty lucky to add his name to my resume of people I have been able to record. Another is a guy named Monty Burns who is pretty big in the Cincinatti rap scene, he just won the Cincinnati Idiol. Hopefully you guys can check these two songs out and give me some feedback on these two tracks.

Touch (smooth jazz)
Uh oh (Rap)

Not sure about the quality (mp3s) http://briefcase.yahoo.com/sportzzz2003

Take Five in 4/4. That's an interesting idea. Nice playing and recording. Sax sounds a bit honky for my taste. Recording process, not playing. How did you record it?
Are the drums midi? Nice programming if they are.

Eddie
Nice recordings. The bottom end on the rap track is a bit "splatty" in my cans through the computer soundcard.
Everything else is nace and clean.

I like touch. There's not a lot of people doing smooth jazz.
Check out Dave Duffus. He's a good mate of mine, and another smooth jazz sax artist.

Hi Mark,

Thanks for checking out the tunes and commenting:). Your stuff is very cool this is the second tune I have heard from you and they both are great. When I recorded the rap track the music bed was already laid so there wasnt much I could do with the bass line to tighten it up. Ty for the link to Dave Duffus, I love Blonde in Jupiter, nothing like a relaxing smooth jazz song to set off the day or even to chill in the car on a hot summer night. Awesome stuff ty again.
