Drew, I really like the bass tone you got. Can you share with me your bass chain? Also, how can I pick up your CD?

xeetstreet,

Glad you posted your website...I'd been looking for it.

Nice jazz vibe ya got there. I think the drums/cymbals might be a tad hot in a couple of the songs. Good stuff overall tho.

Does that "Homegrown" show do any genre of music?

I have to agree with you on the drum mix comment. The biggest thing I restle with is the level of the drums. And yes all types of music are represented. If you are in the general Missouri area, call 573-348-2772 and ask for Kevin about the Homegrown show. If you are in Central Missouri, it's better because recording the interview in the studio is preferred.

Ok, here goes. Typically, when I record bass I go direct from the bass to the BlueTube Pre into the 001. On the bass (a 4-string Music Man Stingray), the EQ is completely flat and there is a sock tied around the strings to muffle stray notes. In Pro Tools, I set up a EQ II Hi-Pass at 45-50Hz, BF76 at 1:4, and then sometimes a URS N12 to emphasize lower frequencies.

If you really want the physically tiny (80mm) Xeet Street Band CD, paypal $5.00 with your address to [email protected]. However, all of the songs on the CD are available for free on my website at: www.sentineldesign.net/xsb/ I hate the way mp3's sound, but sometimes they're just cheaper. It's up to you!

Captain,
I'm enjoying "Congestion" alot. Cool song, the end reminds me alot of early NIN stuff. I'd like to hear more of the stuff you've done. What are you micing the voice with?
thanks!

Guys,
Sorry for double posting this. I made a post on the main section about the Eventide. Man this thing is so freakin cool! Cannot wait to really start messing with it! Anyways, posting here, just in case Roy misses it. Spoke to him the other day, and told him I would send this to him. So fired up how the mix was brought out by it, that I wanted to post it. Not a final mix, and the vocals are going to be redone. This was again posted awhile back, but I did not have vocals. Here is the rough with some pretty nice verbs. EVENTIDE ROCKS!

OUT OF AIR ROUGH VOX - WITH EVENTIDE FUN!!!

-DOC

BTW: I think that they have a very "Incubus" meets old "311" feel going....

Thanks for the listen nightshade, im actually micing with a Shure KSM27 direct into the 001. I had some problems with that mic at first, but once you learn to work it, its not too bad. I had a female client use it a while back though, and it just didnt work for her at all.. Its wierd how a mic reacts differently with different people.

Intel- I like it. I think I told you this last time you posted this one, but great job on the drums. Looks like you're going to have to break out the autotune for the singer in some places.

stut5- interesting stuff, I like in a creepy kind of way.
how'd you do the choir at the end?

Pants- cool song, I agree with nightshade, very NINish.

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Autotune? EVENTIDE! :-) No, they are going to redo the vocals and nail it. I really dig these guys, and they have it in them. I was just fired up last night getting the EVENTIDE patched in finally. That thing is going to opena lot of ideas!

Thanks, I will post the final 3 songs when they are done!

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Hey Chris(IntelDoc)...
Well, the Eventide really makes a difference in the overall mix. It's presence is obvious...fine piece of equipment indeed...
One thing you might consider here...After listening to this new one WITH vox and Eventide, I listened to the older one with NoVox again. To me, the guitars sound much better in the NoVox version. They are more present without being overbearing, and they don't have an 'over-compressed' sound to them. So if you can combine the best of both worlds, it will kill.
Having said that, I know you're still in the 'rough' stages of this anyway, but I just wanted to mention what I'm hearing.
But man!...that Eventide is so fine. It should really make a huge difference in your already great mixes. Post the mixes as they progress...this is interesting.
thanks, Roy

Hey Guys,

It’s been a long time without posting, but life has been a little rough to me lately. I literally had no time to do anything. Also I had to fly to Brazil to solve some personal matters… But now, I’m BACK. I’m working on some new tracks, including a Mandolin piece that Roy Howell sent me a long time ago… Sorry Roy, but now I will put my effort to finish this up. Hope everyone its ok and I will catch up with you guys pretty soon…

Roy, I just would like to let you know that everyone in Brazil loved your guitar tone in Anger Management . They were really impressed with you playing. I will do my best on MANDO and hopefully I will be sending you some rough mix to check your opinion.

Also I was working in a piece for a upcoming video game. Check it out !

You guys have a great day,

Peace

Alright, Rogerio...good to hear from you. I like the guitar solo you added in the middle of 'Anger'... The video game piece 'Danger Ahead' is great, as I would expect from you.
Let me know when you get something on the mandolin thing...

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Hello all! I thought I'd post something of my own here as well!

I post this song because this is a project of my own and a friend of mine. We had some jam sessions together and wrote this song. He plays guitar, bass and he sings. I play drums and I engineered, mixed and mastered the song. It was just a test to see how we would sound! We both are absolutely no professional musicians, but whatever!

I have to say it is much harder to make a good recording when you also have to make decisions about the song itself (how it sounds musically, what to do and what not to do) and also have to play drums. But anyway, I would like to know what you guys think of it so far!!

Stay Away

Any feedback is welcome!

Captain Pants/Ben,
I've started a download on your song twice but had to stop. It's been crawling along at about 13kps for some reason, but I'll get it all here in a while. Looking forward to hearing it tonight.... -Roy

Sorry about that Roy. I know its a pretty big file(7 megs or so) and my webserver aint exactly the fastest one. I do appreciate you trying to check it out though. Your opinion means quite a bit to me. Anyway, sorry again, and Im going to start posting in a smaller compression format. Right now Im doing 192kbps 44.1 stereo, I might drop to 128, or use a different format than .mp3's.

Thanks again,

the production on "killer" and "hip jazz" is fantastic. Can you both talk a little about how you got your sound?

Rogerio, what are you using for drum beats?

Rogerio,

I'm digging "hip jazz". Just one tiny suggestion, the piano could be highlighted a little more, especially in the delicate notes. It's obviously got the lead when its played, but tends to get lost behind everything else.

gYs,

About "Stay Away", just my opinion but...a touch less rhythm guitar, more drums, a tad more vox (with perhaps some autotune in the verses ). Like I said, that's just my take. The song itself is kind of catchy...in a strange way reminds me of some early WHO.

Thanks for that opinion & taking the time to listen! About autotune: Still have to do that in the verses The rest of the song is already 'autotuned'. The verses are a bit more tricky though, because you hear autotune's side effects a little more in those parts. it shouldn't be too 'clean' in those parts of course...

It was just a test how we would sound after some jam sessions we had, actually it was the first time this guy sang 'for real' But we just love making music, that's what matters

I bounced the whole song to 1/4" analog tape by the way, for those who are interested. It really gives the sound character we wanted for this song.

Hey Chris and Roy

Thanks for listening. Roy, Hip Jazz was for an AD but i ended up doing another tune for them. So i just have those minute long songs here and i don't know what to do with it. I am just using them as my personal samples ...
Chris, i agree with you and i will make the changes as soons as i can. However, when i am asked to compose certain songs for companies, they ask to make as much background as possible... No leads... maybe that's why they didn't take that song, because of the piano lead. Oh well.. who knows!!!!

Thanks for the tips

gYs,

Don't know if you've ever done this before, but...one cool thing I like to do with auto tune is to pull it up as audiosuite and just fix the beginning and ends of phrases where singers often have a tendency to slide. You can track their natural pitch and grab the tail and bend it up. Check it out, it's pretty cool and very subtle if done right.

Micah,
Thanks for the listen and feedback. The choir was done using my wife and 3 kids all singing the choir part twice into 1 sm58 then panned L & R.I added some hall verb and reduced the wetness alot so it would go better with the verses which are very dry.I'll check out your site tonight and give a listen. Later Stu

Ben,
Long time no here.I have'n't heard anything new from the Captain in a while.I did just listen to Congestion.Your drum tracks in the chorus doing the halftime are cool sounding.I think you no your forte very well and are very accomplished in this genre.Good Song Ben.Hey don't sweat it on the serial Killer thing I ended up sampling some parts from The Green Mile which worked out allright.
Later Ben
Roy ,Thanks for taking the time to listen to Serial Killer again.I really appreciate you comments.I'll have to check out your site and see whats new
Later Stu

Nightshade
Interesting analogy.and thanks for listening. The vocs were done using an sm 58 and some effects from the waves bundle.I believe I used a very dry delay/reverb and the broadcast track slammer compressor I think. I 'll check out your tune tonight.
Later Stu

Hey Chris,

I mostly use the 'Make Curve' function of Autotune and change whatever is needed with that. I think you are talking about the same thing here. It sounds more natural than using the line tool most of the times, though I use that as well. I will certainly play around with the beginnings and endings of the phrases and leave the rest as it is, the way you said. Thanks for the idea!

I also listened to some of the songs on your website. Just curious: did you use a lot of outboard (while tracking or mixing)? Just wondering....it all sounds very cool!

Chris Cavell 03-21-2004 08:28 AM

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Zero outboard gear other than pre's (and my outboard pre's for those were pretty darn cruddy too!). I don't like to comp or eq going in at 24 bit, especially with jazz. If something doesn't sound completely natural to me when soloed, I'll switch mics, placement, pres...even occasionally the brand of cable, but I usually shoot for a completely uncolored natural sound during tracking for jazz. For me personally, it seems to offer the most versatility during mixdown.

Chris Cavell 03-21-2004 08:42 AM

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Rogerio,

'No Name' sounds pretty good to me. The primary low rhythm guitar that carries the tune sounds like an amp simulator to me. It may be the real thing, but it just comes across that way to me. Low driving guitars like that can be real tough to get to portray a truly gutteral sound without turning to mud. Right now it's almost like something I'd be racing to in a video game, good and crisp and very much in its place. The part is doubled, you may want to experiment with a different amp or distortion for one of the two and use a third just like the first that comes in only to emphasize the rise and fall of the tune as it progresses. (I hope that isn't coming across as harsh, it's not meant to.) Are there plans for any vocals for this one? For some reason I'm picturing something maynard style, almost whispering at the beginning and then full on vox box by the end. Sounds good man, keep it up!

Hey Guys,

Thanks for listening... I appreciate I kinds of feedback.
Chris, all the guitars are scratch yet. I’m planning to use a Mesa Boogie to record the good tracks. I will try to finish it up this week and I will post the final mix here. It's hard to record guitars that low... I'm using some Bass strings to make it more solid and playable. I don’t have any vocals ideas yet… I will wait until I finish it up.
Thank you for your time.
