Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Kay awesome, got my NTK in today. (thanks Allen for letting me know about BPMmusic!)

i already posted this song before in the latest stuff thread, but I redid all the vox with the NTK this time.

it is called away.

definately a difference, as I didnt have to put any eq on the vox. just some reverb, and a tiny bit of compression, with the threshold pretty high, just to take care of a couple of parts.

I have a few exciting days ahead of me, retracking some of these vocals in my songs, and adding some acoustic stuff since I can get a good sound now!

Listening to 'away' right now, Tim. Sounds great... man, I love that simple, but haunting guitar line. Good job on the vocal melody too. The NTK sounds mighty fine... Now, I'm gonna have this in my head for the rest of the the night, but that's alright with me... Good job, Tim.......... ~Roy

Nice stuff. Great production. My only comment would be to bring you vocals out. Don't bury them and smother them with reverb. They sound good enough that you don't need to do that.
Call me old fashioned, but I like to be able to understand all the words easily

Good work. Enjoy the NTK. I'll get one myself oneday

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">i agree, you know i kinda just plugged in the mic to my ProVocal, and just put it on setting 3, the one I've always just used. not realizing to much later on, it does have quite a bit a verb on there.

i think ill track it dry, then i can just add from there.

oh well, just more stuff to sing with my rode

Roy, very kind words...
I'm playing an open mic/singer/songwriter tonight. I was having trouble picking which songs to play (only about 4 songs, plus 2 covers), I guess I'll definately throw this one in, see what people think.

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

ok, in case you actually want to hear this song AGAIN, I redid it, lot less reverb.
whew, man these condensors are a whole diferent ball game. I have automation all over the place, GAWD.
it took a while, but I did it.

anyway here is the page, again, it's called away.
the lyrics are on there too if you still want to know what im saying, although this mix is a bit clearer.

Darren,
Very good job on the mix. Feels good...Very clean, nice separation... I'm curious about how you achieved both the percussion and the bass on this (very nice). Good job... thanks, Roy

Tim.
Vocals sound much better without all the reverb. Good work.

Darren
As usual, great song and great production.

Gene
I'd like a album of your stuff. It's very soothing. Nice track. Hey, can you send me a higher quality MP3 of that guitar track you did for "Don't Tell Me"? The low quality MP3 gets lost in the mix. Thanks.

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Thanks Roy and Mark....

Funny you ask about the bass, I wanted to redo it on my fender , but everyone liked it the way it was. I played it on keys, quantized, then tweaked the midi notes to taste. The sound is stock in my Alesis Qs8 directly into PtLe via lightpipe.

The drums are VST Drums which are real, but you have to use cubase to edit, then import into PTle.

Given it up

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Man, I get too busy to drop in for a while and when I come back there's more new stuff than I can possibly keep up with. I remember having thought at one time it'd be fun to put together some kind of DUC compilation CD, but at this point there's such a wealth of material it'd have to be a boxed set the size of a small filing cabinet!

I've finally gotten post-mastering MP3 samples up on my site (1 full song and 7 shorter clips). The mastering engineer did a pretty decent job, I think. The only question in my mind is whether I would've opened up the top end quite as much as they did, but I tend not to have a lot of tolerance for highs and mix a tad on the darker side (not to mention the mastering facility does several hundred projects every year and I'm sure has a better idea than I do how to "get things in the ballpark" for radio and such).

Hey guys,
I don't post much here but I just wanted to say that some of the stuff that you guys are posting amazes me. I love engineering, but I am not the composer that some of you are. I was a bass player and I don't think I have ever gotten past the play whats on the page mentality. Anyway, just wanted to say hi, and that i love comming in now and then to listen to a few great songs.

Thanks,

Where you been, Ben? Been out on a Ben-der, again? (I have no idea what that means either, but pretty clever wordage, huh? )

Man, the NIN cover is killer...I love the main 'tuff' driving part. And you did a great job on the vocal...definitely the best I've heard you do... you didn't hold back at all. Sounds great...

dodo, nice song! The mix sounds great on my HR824's. At first listening the first cymbal crash sounded odd, like there needed to be another type of flava there.

metaltim,
Listened to the newest 'away', and again, I love that haunting guitar...there's something almost medieval about that section. The vocals are much clearer now. I might only suggest that they may be a bit wetter for this particular production, as long as they don't lose their presence. But,it's sounding very good overall to me. Once again, that guitar line is with me for a while... thanks, Roy

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">wow it's cool to know i can write a riff that sticks in someone's head.. that is the key to success right??

i'd agree it's one of those you hear, and then hum throughout the day.
medieval: what a word i would describe as a 'depressingly happy' riff.

the best thing, thats the first thing I played once i got the rhythm/drums recorded, its just what came out, and i went with it, not knowing where I'd end up.
that's the kinda stuff that keeps all of us coming back for more, and more.. forever

i agree with the vox, I'm still not totally happy with em. there's a happy medium somewhere, just haven't found it. i think i'll just add some D-verb this time, I don't know if I could sing it again quite as well as I did in those takes!

kind words
Tim

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Well, I'll toss one out and see what you all think...

ftp://basstardz.dhs.org/Upload/strive.mp3

daBasstard, I hope you don't mind - if it's a problem, I'll remove it. It's just for a day or three - my server's screwing up - they're changing a bunch of crud over.

Anyway, the song is called "Strive". The band is called "Divide The Day" (formerly "Ripshaw"). They're unsigned (well, they're signed to me for a development / production deal), but pretty popular around here. They did a couple of LA area Warped Tour dates last year, so some of you may have heard of them.

Anyway, I just thought I'd share a bit of one of the things I've been working on lately.

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Sorry - try this. Go to:

ftp://basstardz.dhs.org/Upload/

then in the open folder, right click on "Strive.mp3" and select "copy to folder". Select the folder you want on your computer and hit "okay". Once it's there you should be able to open it with your player of choice.

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Phil, Very solid mix. I like the ear candy! (like at 1:48 where the vox fades in from the left). Nice attention to detail. Vocals sound great. I like the sound of the snare but it seems distant, not burried, just a little far away (phase?). That is all. Cool.

Phil O'Keefe 04-02-2003 05:25 PM

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Hmmm... maybe I should bring it up a bit. It's bone dry - no verb at all, and I don't think it's phase - there's only one mic on the snare (side of shell).

Thanks for listening and thanks for the comments!
