Jon,

Stunning. The vocals seem like appendages rather than the core of the song. The guitar sound (performance) was hypnotic. Do more. Really enjoyed it.

OK, I've searched back a few pages and can't find any other Jons, so I guess you must have directed this at me?? Are you sure you didn't type the name wrong in there?

But thanks. I appreciate it. There's more up there if you're brave enough to listen.

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

I am posting a fairly unmixed thingy I was doing for a blues/ rock band. It's instrumental, but they are okay players I think. I am new to this part of Pro Tools.

So, there are heaps of pops and clicks and stuff from the guitar, and I need to cover them I guess.

Please, criticize. I threw up some reverb and a tiny bit of eq just so I could tolerate it.

Joe-

The guitar sounds way thin...that's an amp mic'd right? was he on 2 or something?

Sounds like DI...hmmm.. you can reamp it...he'll never know!

Drums sound great!

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Thanks big -

He's straight into the 002 using Amplitube. I think it sounds way thin too. But he liked the sound. A little tin-ney for me though. We did a left and right pan of the duped track with different settings. I think I am going to drop the high end a bit and ride up the mids. That might give it some more body.

Thanks about the drums. They sound alright I guess. What about the bass guitar and overall bass of song?

I could use some more input if anyone has time. Thanks again. Keep it coming please.

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

JOe,
The guitars actually have a great blues sound for amplitube. I have never had luck with that plugin, but I also have an original 65 bassman blackface that takes first for blues too though.

Agreed that they are somewhat thin, but I think for that tune it seems to fit.

Nice kick drum.... Seems that the hat is a tad more centered than I like, but all and all, great sounds. Nice deep ended snare with pop.

good job.

Oh ya, I especially like the missed harmonic at 1:57... doh....

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Hey Doc,

Thanks very much for your feedback. I have number or Amplitude presets that I think are fairly good for blues and rock. Aside from the "thinness" of the 2 patches in this tune (left and right panned) they can sound pretty good. Frankly, I prefer them to Guitar Rig. Call me silly. Of course the Blackface you have is really, the only way to go. The POD Xt Pro has a pretty good emulator for the Blackface, but NOTHING beats the real thing.

Funny, some musicians want to keep the weirdest and sometimes most awful mistakes in their tunes. In this case, he thought it gave the track some "realism". I think it just sounds like a mistake. Ha! But, what do "I" know, I just work here.

Anything else I can do besides panning that hat a little more left? Thanks about the bass drums. I like 'em too. Pretty straight forward triggering of DFHS samples on the whole kit. I don't think we used any of the real acoustic drums sounds on this one.

Do you know anything about re-amping with a POD Pro? If you do and can give me a quick lesson, well, I'll spring for the Zuchinni bread.

More comments? Please!

Thanks,

~ J

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

For re-amping all you really do is run a line out to the preamp and then put it back into Pro Tools. That is about it. If you wanted, you could mic up a cab too. That is how I do it. Usually guys run a direct signal as well as a mic'd signal to have the ability to send a original signal to a cabinet. I run out to say the 85 JCM and then into the bogner 4x12. mic that up and send it to a pre of choice and then into Pro Tools, or a compressor. Just depends. But, ya man, send out a channel with output say 7 to your Pod and then digital back in. Mess around until the sound you want is there and you are money.

Good luck,

- Doc

P.S. the blackface even has the original tubes. Getting it worked on though... Gonna be sweet and putting a grounded plug in too.

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Ah cool. I can't wait to hear how that thing sounds when you get it "touched up".

About reamping:

I'd like to be able to use the reamp function on a POd Pro that I have. I can send a dry (digital) signal to a track in PTLE and monitor the processed signal at the same time. But, my confusion lies in reamping that dry signal. The POD manual is great save for that section. So, I can input that signal (via SPDIF) back into the POD, but I cannot seem to get a level in PTLE for it. Weird. I have the ins set up correctly in the POD, but I guess I am confused on how PTLE "sends" the signal through the POD Pro and back to PTLE.

I am so stupid sometimes. I checked the Line6 forum for an idiot's guide, but to no avail. Ever use one of these?

Powerjoe,

Just since nobody has mentioned it yet, I'd think the bass is a little low and I'd like to hear some more. I dont think you should be shy with the bass in this type of tune, Crank it up there so we can really hear it.

Great guitar sounds for amplitube. I actually quite like that plugin, after a bit of twiddling you can get a really desirable sound

Thanks

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Thanks Chris,

I can use all the feedback I can get. I too think the bass was low, but I just didn't want it to "boom" and overpower. So, when the "real" mixing comes, I will ad a bit of compression and boost/ smooth it out a bit. That bass track was done with Amplitube as well. Just straight into the 002 with a MusicMan Stingray bass.

I did some reamping the guitars last night, but I dunno. I guess I will repost it at the same place later today with some changes. Was the track "bright" enough for your ears?

Thanks for offering your comments. They are appreciated.

Yeah, should be good with the bass compressed a bit. It'll be nice if you can just get it a bit more up front and also to fill out the low end a bit more. Great kick sound BTW

Should be interesting to hear the reamped guitars. The track was definitely bright enough for me. No matter what the style I like to hear some nice bright sounds. It brings the songs up to date and gives them that modern sheen.

Thanks

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Ah, cheers chap!

Well, I shall get to adding some compression and upping the bass then. I should get a tick to upload again here in the next day. I have done a bit of reamping as well and I think the overall sound of the guitar is broader. (Is that a term I can use with music?) *shrugs*.

Thanks for the suggestions once again.

Devon is quite a bit further down from here. My grandads sister used to live down there. Died 2 years ago on my 16th. I'd never actually met the woman, except when I was about 9 months

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

All,
This is a song that JSTUNNER redid by Alice In Chains. For those of you who do not know JSTUNNER, he is an old high school friend of mine back in the day. Great guy and a really good guitar player which he claims was my fault. (Thanks buddy) He used to be a bassist back in the school days, and then went off on a Zack Wylde assault and turned into an ole school wanker. He does all of these remakes of classics, and this one is another good one. I have heard some of his IRON MAIDEN tunes and they are impressive. I hope that he can (and will) elaborate on his process. His amp I know is an old METALTRONIX 100 watt head. Sounds great! Very heavy.... Puts a boogie to shame as far as tone I think.

Everything is JSTUNNER. Drums are programmed not sure how though.

Here is the link.

WE DIE YOUNG - ALICE IN CHAINS

Enjoy,

- Doc

P.S> He does his own stuff too that is very good. Just needs to get some balls and post it up!

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Thanks Doc for posting and hosting. My proccess is realy quite simple. Stick a mic in front of an amp and play. I usually do cover songs when I get a new piece of gear or learn a new recording trick. It's easier just to play and record something I'm familiar with than tinker around with writing stuff. Hence the covers, Alice in Chains is a band I've always liked and with We Die Young being a short song it was a good song to try out a new Rode NTK mic for my vocals. The drums on this are done with the BFD program. DW kick, Pearl Toms, Slingerhand Cymbals, and Ludwig Snare from the the regular BFD pack. I usually just use the ole pencil in the note, adjust velocity and copy and paste/repeat function for programing my drums. All guitars are Les Pauls equiped with EMG's 85 in the neck and an 81 in the bridge. I run those through a trusty Boss SD-1 overdrive peadal and a M-1000 Metaltronix Head, conected to just a Marshal 2 x 12 1936 cab. I stick a SM-57 on the left speaker and an E609 on the right, usualy record a few takes and use one take from the 57 and one take from the 609 and pan them hard left and hard right. I have no fancy pre's just stock digi rack pres. Bass guitar is an Ibanez SR-400 run through a DI box nothing fancy. Vocals are cut with a Rode NTK through a stock Digi pre. Other than that I just play. What can I say, I love my Metaltronix and wouldn't part with it for any amount of money.

Thanks for the compliment, it's much appreciated. I get a little nervous when sharing "covers" I just hope I did the song justice and didn't insult other hardcore AIC fans. Layne was one and still is one of the greatest rock singers I've ever heard.

This guy can really play.... To think that he was a bass player before, football joke, and Mr. Arnold Schwarzenegger (Ohio) blows my mind. Sorry Jason, I think that I have known you long enough though! What at least 1989? Good ole' Ohio days, ah... the days.

He is a really great player though Roy. I hope that he will post other stuff too that he has done. His originals are cool too.

Awe I'm feeling the love... ya know if it wasn't for you Doc sporting your mullet and flourecent yellow Ibanez Jem playing Shy Boy, I'd probably never have persued the guitar further. I think I've known you longer than '89 too. If memory serves me correct, I think I first met you in 6th grade art class with Mr. Wolnowski, I believe we were making tooth pick sculptures.

Anyway, here's an original instrumental I wrote. Lots of fast pentatonic stuff.

Thanks for the kind words. Ok, now for the final plug for BFD. I'm probably crazy for covering this tune as it is "the" Iron Maiden classic, but for BFD, I hardly had to do any editing of the drum section from a midi file I found off a Maiden fan site. I played and recorded everything else myself.

No amplitube! It has it's place, but I'm not a big fan of that. I'm old school when it comes to guitars. Les Pauls and Marshals, in my case a Metaltronix M-1000 head, which is esentially a Lee Jackson hot roded JCM 800 with a couple extra bells. But yes, the drums are all midi with the BFD plug. Thanks for listening though.

Here's the newest project I'm working on; they are a folk group called Coup de Grass. They laid down the bed tracks for a 4 song demo tonight, and I really like them so far. Here is what they are doing with the classic tune "Summertime." No vocals yet, but what vocals they were rehearsing looks promising. Unfortunately they are not coming back into the studio for a couple of weeks, so this will have to do for now.

Man! Don't hide the link to your songs, I was looking in three pages for Run to the hills
It's been a while since I heard the original but man you play it GOOD! I like those drums in the intro, very cool. I think the guitar should be dominating a bit more during the solo though... But I'm no expert.

Thanks for your input Wicked, but they are a folk jam band. I am sure that the song is going to take on an entirely different feel once they add their vocals. They are doing this as a demo, and only running one or two takes per song to keep a 'live' feel.

Thanks Stiff ... I really had fun with this bunch. They are genuinely nice and fun people.
