All your work is awesome guys.

Ill post some stuff soon just got my 002 rack

I love Super Beetle man that stuff is catchy as hell.

The stuff you guys are making is whats missing in todays mainstream music !!!

Thank you Kenny. Believe me, we never made a decision to be "missing from mainstream music", but we certainly are!! We had a great time making these two CDs on our own, but it was an unbelievable amount of work. My hat's off to anyone who can do it. I just hope that 50-100 people hear it and enjoy it. Anything after that is gravy.

Thanks,
Greg

Hi everyone. My name is Matt Holden and I have had a 002 for about a year now but never got around to posting on the user conference. I signed up today at work and saw this post. I don't have any speakers so I can't check out tunes here but I will when I get home. This seemed like a good way to meet some other people and pick your brains. I have a website www.mattholden.net which is currently just linked to my myspace page. I did everything on the 002 including the band videos. I'm not real good at mixing really and want some advice on mixing and mastering. I have a ton of plug ins but don't know how to use most of them. Anyway any advice or constructive criticism would be cool. Matt Holden

I have never posted in this thread before… not sure why, probably scared of mass public criticism & humiliation or some such… But as everyone else has been brave, I thought I had better share too…

Here is a track from an album I have just finished; I thought I would post this one as I normally do a lot of very nasy hardcore/mathcore/whatever metal, and while this track is still metal, it’s more mainstream & at least has singing on it instead of screaming, so it might be slightly more listenable for the wide range of tastes & experience here at the DUC…

Thanks for taking the time to listen…

Cheers

That acoustic guitar constantly panning is a bit annoying as is the buzz saw sound. It song breaks up when it really kicks in so lower your mix volume.

rkaynan 07-19-2007 07:10 PM

EARTHSHAKE

Very good sound quality and mix. The mixture of different sounding guitar tones is great. I think the drums could come down a db or a bit more.

Thank you so much for the comments.

I took your advice and lowered the drums. I think that this mix is much better.

...Stev Reich...

The problem with my mix (as I hear it) is this: It's too boxy and kind of stifled sounding. I would really like to create some more space within the mix so that the solo part, which runs up the middle pretty much the whole time, has a little bit more room. Plus, i would like to have each part be a little more defined.

Takes me back.

Great project. What I'm hearing, if you'll forgive me for saying, is too much compression, and not enough high-end. The result is an antiseptic mix, which is the problem I think you were describing. Without the "presence" up top, it sounds like a sequence, which is deadly when you're doing Reich. It should sound like guitars, which are not quite so perfect (in dynamics or pitch) as this mix would have the listener believe.

Guitar is the instrument of flawed people. Perfect people listen to oboe. If I listen to this Reich piece I want to hear guitars.

My 2 cents. From the other room my wife thought it was a sequence as well.

Hi Everyone!

I am hoping for some constructive criticism (on any aspect - the mix, the song, performance, etc.) on a new song I am mixing. I usually have trouble with bass levels, btw. This is actually the first song I have been able to mix all in one session thanks to a new dual-core processor! What a joy!

Anyway, the song is called "Let It Go" and here is a link to download it:

Here it is!! Our latest smash power pop hit single..... EARTHSHAKE!!! -- TAKE TWO!!

Based on everyone's feedback I made some changes to the mix. I hope this one is better!

I'd love to hear what you think.

Here is the mix with a sudo master job using the MCDSP project studio plug-ins (master limiter and a little analog tape sim) in a separate mastering session:

And, here is the RAW mix right out of Pro Tools with only dither on the Master:

OK, so no one has really jumped on this one yet, so I decided to do some more work on it on my own. I have a new version that is actually in a player on the more formal part of my web page.

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

All the instruments soundsd great. I would bing the vocals up a notch or two. The snare kinda distracts a little from it all and the guitar on the left is a little too loud. I like the leslie keys in teh background. If you have the snare that loud I would get a little more kick in there then. seem to be a poppy snare but no kick.

Put a EQ on your vocals and boost 8K to see if it gives you a little more air.

Throw autotune on the top, set the two left knobs (forget them right now) to 51 and 51. Then the key to the key you are in or to C - Chromatic. Not that you are way out, but it will tweek it naturally.

Sounds good, but need a little low end too. Turn the snare down a db or two.

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Hey Doc,

Thanks for giving it a listen - you always seem to be willing to help me out - so thanks a lot!!

I am assuming that you are saying that the vocal needs the AutoTuning - I really thought it was pretty close, but I'll throw it on a see how far off the meter says I am. I will take your word for it with the bass - I have such a hard time hearing that correctly in my room. I have to do something about that. I'm also a little confused on the guitar on the left that you refer to - if you're talking about the acoustic, it's just a doubled track panned equally. If it's the electric at the end, I think it actually is panned a little to the left.

I'll give the snare a tweek as well and maybe post a revision in a day or so.

Thanks again!!

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

The vocals were good, but slightly off in some parts. That was why I gave you that setting to "try." It just smoothes it out. Also, not sure what plugs you have, but RVox is a great one to use.

The acoustic sounded a little louder to the left. I will throw it on my system later to hear it through the mains.

It is a great beginning though, just needs some tweeks.

Also, http://www.readyacustics.com for the bass issue... It helped me out ALOT!

I was wondering if I could get some feedback on on two new mixes I have done. I have been taking some courses on Berklee Music online and I am trying to apply some things I'm learning. I still have a way to go but if you have any suggestions for improving the mix at all please let me know.

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Eric,
Not my type of genre, but decent. The drums sound like a drum machine though. That was the first thing that stood out. Guiars are a little shrilly. Vocals sound good though, but the drums defintitely sound mechanical.

Again, not my type of music, but everyone has their thing.

Re: Need some help with this mix

hey, cool tune and nice mix job. a lot of the advice given I agreed with, but my biggest thought on the tune actually isnt in your control. I think the snare sound doesnt really suit the tune. like, its a cool sound, but its kind of thin and doesnt have a lot of presence. its a sound that would work in some tunes, but doesn't feel like it carries enough weight for this one. theres only so much EQ you could do to simulate that, but I guess in the future you could just have the drummer spend more time thinking about what snare sound suits the song(assuming of course he has the luxury of using a different snare or is really good at tuning). if youv ever listened to steve jordan play that guy will willingly use a different snare for every tune if he thinks it warrants it, and really spends a lot of time trying to picture the right drum sound for the song itself. a lot of drummers think that their sound is what it is and its not their job to change(hey it worked for ringo), but I think its totally worth taking the time to 'craft the sound' and get something everyones happy with. I've actually scrapped entire takes of tunes and told the drummer to come back on another day if the snare sound wasnt doing it for me. mind that was on my own music in my own studio. thats not always an opportunity you have, but if you do, you might as well.

James

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Ok Doc, (and anyone else that's interested) I've had another go at it. Mostly just changes in levels - as you had recommended - or at least my best try at it. And some AutoTune-ing - just to iron out the rough spots.

Here's the latest:

http://www.cavetyoureruptor.com/Let%20It%20Go.htm

Enjoy!

yo man how u just gonna jack some beats take some time make ur own beats dont just rap over instrumentals come on now

Cavet Your Eruptor 08-04-2007 11:27 PM

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

And since I can never seem to leave well enough alone - there is yet another new version up on the web page:

http://www.cavetyoureruptor.com/Let%20It%20Go.htm

This is an attempt to add some space and dynamics - to try and make more of a difference between verse and chorus and let the instruments breathe more.

Don't know if I succeeded, but I'd be happy to hear comments!!
