i *think* this sounds pretty good. could be wrong though.
has some intentional distortion.
and a Morrissey sample.

Roy, what are you using as a di on your latest?

Sorry for the delay, bp...just saw this. As far as guitars, I'm running direct to Digi ins on 'Rattlesnake'...using plugins....no external di at all. When no vocals or acoustic guitars are involved(no mikes), I prefer going direct. Right now I use minimal equipment(001/6.4 and plugins), but I'm about to do a major upgrade overall, probably in the spring...will probably be seeking you guys' advice on this and that.

Double,
'Heavenly'....very cool song. I love the big lazy snare(for one thing)...nice vocals and overall production. Good job, sir.

Cool, it sounds great. I've only experimented a little with going direct, I've been using some of my stompboxes for that.

I usually record dry, because I find it really difficult to play without the low latency monitoring on. I'll play around a bit more and post something at some point. Again, great work.

I really liked that clean sound about halfway through the piece. Great stuff. ]

Oh, and definitely keep us posted on your upgrade, I'll be curious to hear what you decide on.

Morning everyone,

have a new track online that I did for a contemplation cd which is an instrumental cover of Jessica Harp's "Rose Colored Glasses". I have an mp3 up for download at: www.charlienaebeck.com. Just click on the message boards link and go under my section and click on the topic called "Charlie's CD" and you can download a copy if you like. Well, its back to work for now here. peace

Hey Roy-I have been trying to get decent direct sounds. The only tracks I like are through a sansamp....have tried Guitar Rig and Amplitube, Line 6...never happy. What kind of levels are you hitting? -18dbfs or higher? Thanks =0)

New song

New stuff from Rotten mill.

Me rasistit (We are racists)

Song tells that rasism is all over the world, it is not just a western problem.

Chorus: I am a rasist, you are a rasist, we hate.

Feel free to say anything including negatives.

Re: Latest stuff

Hi Guit,
I'll have to check the exact levels I get later...in a sesh right now. But for the 'solo licks' guitar on Rattlesnake, I used GuitarRig. I definitely prefer it over SansAmp, and have saved my own settings in it. (personal taste...the SansAmp overdrive is too 'grainy' for me). One thing that's obvious to me is that the response I get from GuitRig or Amplitube is very different depending on the guitar I use. My strat has standard single coil pickups, and certain settings sound weak, or noisy. But my 'custom' guitar has EMG's, including a Humbuckin...very strong, but dead silent. I use it for most of my solos, and it works well whether miked through an amp, or GuitRig, or Amplitube.

I'll try to post back on those levels...

How've you been, by the way?...

-Roy

Guit4Brains 02-08-2005 12:15 PM

Re: Latest stuff

Thanks so much, I will keep playing around. As far as pickups, I am using Tom Anderson stacked pickups in my Tele, and vintage in my Les Paul. I have EMG 81s in an old BC Rich Warlock (from the metal days =0). I might try those, they are great pickups for sure and def. high output. Maybe the EMGs are the missing link in my direct tones.

Thanks for asking, I have been getting ready to take my PTs sessions into a bigger studio...going to see how far I can take what I've tracked in LE. Also, I have been working on getting some of my stuff into t.v./film, I have a firm offer on one tune. I still drop by real quick when I have time. BTW,your stuff sounds amazing as usual.

hey, my band just put 2 new songs up,

www.purevolume.com/thesixteenmillimetershrine

or

www.myspace.com/thesixteenmillimetershrine

the compression quality is much better on purevolume than myspace so if u guys can check them out and post back what you think about both the songs and recording, that would rock.

and if anyone likes them and wants me to put them on my server so u can download them at 320kbps just let me know

nice stuff,

stewie and luzer, both you guys sound good, but with the streaming quality it's tough to give feedback on the mix. Can you guys post an mp3 someplace?

nice production/song/performance to both of you guys, though.

finne, also nice work.

Re: Latest stuff

here's my latest. It's a song I posted here, but re-tracked. I'm playing with the mix, there was a lot of amp noise, so I'm figuring out what to do with that.

(I have an appt. with a really good amp tech to service one of my amps, so I'm hoping that helps.)

thanks!

I love this song, and as I've said, your voice and style...as Finne ssuggested, I think the drums are a little low, and also the overall guitars seem a little hot too. But you said you may remix it, so I'll be looking for it...the song itself is great, IMO.

Luzer kidd/Matt,
All 3 of these songs are killer...mixes are good without losing the 'rawness'...vocals, guitars sound great to me. So what does your band consist of, and what do you play? Great stuff.

thanks a million, roy, glad you like it. I think I'll sit with the mix for a week or so, I think it will need some eq help, there's a lot of guitar parts fighting for finite real estate in the sonic spectrum. I think you guys are right, though. Thanks for the listen.

p.s., roy, I had your latest tune stuck in my head all day. very catchy phrasing.

later all...

hey roy, thanks a lot, that means a lot to us.
We have
Mike - Vocals / Guitar (the mastermind in the band, and his vocals keep getting so much better each time we record)
Michelle - Guitar (just started doing a few band backups during practice, but will probably be too shy live, we'll see)
Mikey T - Drums (he's only 15, he's been in the band for like a month, we have been looking for drummers for like 7-8 months and found him.)
Matt(me) - Bass / Backup vox (i'm not a good singer and havnt done any vocals on any of our recordings yet

The First 2 songs on purevolume (a quality of mercy, and Us or them unknown) are our new songs with our new drummer while double damn we recorded last april and thats my singer playing drums on that, (the thing i like most about double damn is the snare, i think it sounds really cool, p.s. that's dverb on it.)

and on the 2 new songs, i didn't eq them at all in Pro tools except i put a Digi 1 Band eq on them rolling off the lows at 150hz and that's it

wow, really great songs matt! I particularly enjoyed "A Quality of Mercy". Awesome orchestration and spacing of guitars. i hear alot of great influence from Hot Water Music, but you guys have a very distinct sound that really complements the instrumention. Very cool mixes too...
Definitely on my playlist now...

thanks again, we are actually just starting to play shows again and we have this big contest coming up that we made it onto, www.thebreakcontest.com we are playing feb, 27th, so we're hoping that we can make it past the first round this way we get to play bamboozled fest, if we made it past the first round and not the second round we would still be really happy just that we got to play bamboozled, well actually we are all really happy because when the guy called my guitar player to make sure she got the tickets he said how much he loved the demo, so we are really happy just from that, and we can't get mad if we don't win the first round because this is our first show since finding a new drummer, so we don't really deserve it as much as some of the other bands that have been playing longer.

Thanks Roy. Intro is made with Tonelab as usual. But I am very proud of clean guitar. It is my first time to record quitar amp. I think it is reasonable. (Tele HW-1->Fender Champ 12 (red knob)->Blue Baby Bottle->MP20->001, I have to be without ADI-2 for a while and I CAN HEAR IT!!! )

Glad you guys liked it. The bass was run through an Tech21 SansAmp RBI and the clean signal going into an Avalon vt737sp. I wound up not using the Avalon blended signal so what you hear is just the Tech21.

During the mix I put a Waves Renaissance 2 channel EQ on the track, then a Wave C1 compressor to push it out some... mix to taste

thanks, the drums are my Gretsch Catalina Birch set. i mic'd it with
Kick - Beta 52 inside, TLM-103 outside
Snare - SM57 Top and bottom
Toms - MD421s
Overheads - MXL 603s
then i put a MXL 2001 like 4 feet away from the drumset. it was about 3' off the ground and offset to the right so that it was pointing mostly at the snare so that it would pick up so more of the depth of the snare, which i feel it worked out good, and then i also added a slight amount of
True Verb - Drum Room default setting to the set.

the only thing i'm not happy with is that i think the bass drum is a little too bassy and not punchy enough, but it doesnt bother me too much. also i wish i had new strings on my bass, and that's about it
