Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

jvox,
I love it...both refreshing and strange (a great mixture to me)... as far as the visualizations not responding much, the piece is fairly level and soft in general, so maybe that's why. I don't care much for WinAmp in general myself, preferring Quicktime 6.3 or higher for the truest audio playback (definitely over WinMedPlayer too).
Very creative piece done very well, IMO, and I really enjoyed it. Please keep em coming.
thanks, Roy

LTRAIN and archtop.....looking forward to hearing yours next.

Hey archtop...
Now, that must've been fun to do... Very cool piece, especially the improv stuff toward the end. What did you play on this, and how did you record the horns, mike setup-wise?
thanks, Roy

archtop 01-23-2004 10:03 AM

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Thanks Roy

It was fun, I'm playin' drums,

I am sort of bringing the wrong style to the table on this one, overplaying, too loud, too much, etc. and you can kinda tell I've only learned the song about 10 minutes earlier, but still fun

Tracked live :drums, flute,and guitar,
but now that the bass is there, I believe I would play totally different on the drums,
but the lack of total isolation is meaning ,guitar and flute would need to be redone also.

Nothin' special on the horns, 414 cardiod, close.

NightshadeCrisis- cool song, I really like it. The drums need a lot of brightening I think.

Archtop- cool piece nice melody

jvox- sounds good very bright and in your face mix which I like.

thanks!

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Hi Evan,
I really like the synth line/groove of this, and it has the makings of a really good piece. I know this is a 'scratch' mix, so here's just a couple of suggestions you might consider.

I agree about the drums. The snare sounds really muffled.....I would just use a different snare sample altogether (still fairly deep, but percussive). Possibly the same with the kick...

Also, I would break up the arrangement some, so the 'synth line' doesn't feel too monotonous after a while. The ending 'breakdown' would work well in the middle, for example...maybe even twice(just a few measures of it each time). It would feel good each time it comes back in kick-ass.
But it's a very cool piece (like all your stuff is)...

thanks, Roy

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

great, thanks for the advice, i think im gonna do that, cause when i was arranging that, i just looped that little thing, which i originally was only going to play on guitar using the synth line as reference for when i put down the track, but i had no idea what i was going to play on the guitar when recording(which is part of the fun of it ), so i stuck very simple with the song arrangement.

so for putting in a new sample, i would need to get SoundReplacer correct? is this pretty easy to use? ive been contemplating buying it for some time now? better yet...is there something like this in the Waves Native Gold Package? I think i'll fool around a bit with the arrangement and figure out something, i was thinking of putting a "chemical" style fast snare hit beat using ReDrum in the middle where it stops and have it build up for a big finish...

by the way, would anyone want to do vocals for this song? i'm having a total mental block and would love to hear this song with someone's vocals on it. thanks for the replies!!

as long as the grass is green

here's something my girlfriend wrote. she barely plays guitar and she actually used the wrong chords when she wrote it. i mimicked her guitar part (she can't play to a click), then came up with some acompaniment, and got rid her guitar altogether. it was fun, quick, and i used sampletank 2. highly reccomend it for winxp users. i hear it still doesn't work well on macs.

pdk,

i really like the vocals for this song. in fact, i think the whole song is pretty good. the only thing, and this is a personal thing, is the snare drum sound. i think it sounds a bit dead, but the samples vary by ear.thats it, otherwise, i think it sounds great.

Ha! You know what's funny?

I never noticed this thread before just now. I mean, I read it before the redesign, but somehow its placement (first, by the FAQ) blinded me to it since. Has that ever happened to anyone? Well, so I have a mumpload of songs to download. I've started with Neon Radiation, good stuff, man. I just did a holiday song, which I posted in it's own thread because I thought this one was long forgotten. Sorry about that, anyway, you can listen... oh... the site seems to be down right now. I must thank Roy again for 1and1. I'll be transferring all my sites there sometime this week, I'll post the link here when I'm done. Then after that comes the fuuun part: The Redesign! Yay! Woohoo! I get to code html! Whoopeee!

Hmmm. Sarcasm just doesn't come through on the internet. Which one of these yellow guys is being sarcastic? Hmm. That's the problem with smilies, they can't convey complex emotions. Anyone seen a smiley that can do angst? huh?

Nice feel. I agree about the snare sound. Also I think that the vocals are a little too far in the background. I feel that the reverb is not helping this either.

Good job

pdk,
I agree on the snare, but I like this song...her unique vocals and the tremelo guitar work well together. You captured her unique style before worrying too much about the production, and sometimes that turns out very cool...good job.

Roy, Just got around to hearing Springtime Girls, thats a really fun song. It flows really well, i think im going to burn it on a CD and have it wake me up in the morning. It would be a good start-of-the-day song, and i mean that in a good way.

1st:thanks for all the feedback, i really apreciate it. any suggestions on a snare type would be appreciated. sampletank has a plethora of awesome sounding snares as well as every effect you could want, and i can apply up to 5 effects.

2nd:"the big lebowski" has got to be 1 of my all-time favorite flicks. (coen bros. rock - nihilists! LOL)

"summertime girls" very cool - the tune takes me there

nightshadecrisis 01-25-2004 12:02 PM

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Glad to hear you like the Big Lebowski! Its a great movie!

now, as for snare sound, I've never used Sampletank(its on the liste of things i have to get...)but i imagine there is an audition feature which lets you hear what each sample would sound like in the mix. So I would just try to find something that has a bit more shape to it, maybe a lower pitch to accompany the lower bass riff, and a longer release, if you have that option in sampletank.

one thing that is hard to replicate of the sounds of a real kit is the different velocities that are hit each time. A good drummer will hit the drums pretty consistently, but of course for the different parts of the song it may get harder or softer accordingly. that can be difficult because raising the volume won't raise the velocity necessarily.

anyway, i really dig the song, the chorus rules. maybe someone who knows sampletank can give you an idea of a good snare sound to try.

Finally, I have some new stuff. This is quite a change in direction for me, and there a few more similar ones to be uploaded this week. It's abstract, minimal and quite glitchy. It was all done in Ableton Live using cello, piano, tv static and various noise samples to create rhythms. It's quite 'different', hope you like it and thanks for listening.

pk,

i like the piece, reminds me a bit of Amon Tobin(if you havent heard him you should check him out). its very refreshing, and i like that you sampled some wierd things in there!

roy,
once again, mudslide blues. how do you do it?

Thanks for the kind words. As for Mr.Tobin, you'd be interested to see how often I have mentioned him on this - and a few other - boards! Indeed, I've been a fan of his music for a few years now. I'm flattered by the comparison, thanks again.

I specialize in Soul; (Maxwell, Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield, Isley Brothers, etc.) Check out my vocals sounds at http://www.michauxmusic.com

I would be interested in trading tracks with an awesome Fender Rhodes player or drummer (Quest Love style). If anyone is interested in trading, send me a link to your music. By the way, my intro song is un-mastered. The other songs are mastered, but about to be pulled and replaced. Tom Coyne of Sterling Sound in NYC is about to master this record. You could e-mail me direct also, I can’t seem to get my e-mail notices of reply’s to this site.

bp- yet another great song. I must admit the first time I heard one of your songs I thought "this guy can't be serious with that voice but it's grown on me. Now I think it's one of the better ones on the forum b/c it's so unique. Keep 'um coming.

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

thanks,

yeah, I go back and forth with my singing. Really the reason I do it is because I don't have a real singer. Eventually I'd like to get someone to sing them. In between singing more often, getting better with burying the vox with comp and reverb, it's improving a bit. But what the hell, a lot of my favorites don't put babies to sleep with their voice.

anyway, glad you like the song!

Thanks for the kind words PK....Yeah the desert --- DG is one of my mentors as is Steve Hackett and Pat Metheny. The PRS guitar was played through a Roland GP100. I very seldom use plugins. The drum/percussion loop was played by Bill Bruford.

I enjoyed listening to you track, very cool piano parts, nice use of space

bp,
Great song, man...I know exactly what Micah means about your voice. Basically, it's so deceptively simple that, at first, you might wonder if it's any good or not. But then, it grows on you and you realize how cool it is. Kinda like drinking good wine...bitter at first, but sho feels good after a while.
Plus I love your lyrics...there's a wry humor behind them that makes one enjoy the music even more. So there ya go...

Also, am I hearing way better drum programming on this than before?...Is it that you're getting better with Reason...or what are you using on this?

Warning, the following is a commercial message.
I bought my DIGI pretty much exclusively to do this project Stravinsky's Rite of Spring arranged for electric guitar, electric bass and percussion.
It took about two years. As y'all are learned in this sort of thing, I used a MIDI drum module (Alesis DM PRO) for the drums, and I really tried to make it sound like a real drummer. I figure every drum/cymbal hit averaged about 20 mouse clicks/ key strokes. Anyway, I have an MP3 condensation of the first 15 minutes.

Jeezus Scummyjob. That's about the most ambitious and fascinating piece I've heard here or anywhere else for a long time. I think Stravinsky would have loved it.

Scummyjob- nice piece, I like it. The drums sound great. The only critique I could give is the overall volume is a bit low. Now that you're done with your project might I suggest you use your free time to find a new job.
