"The DUC Becomes Eclectic" I love this thread.
Thought I'd throw this one into the ring; any feedback, however harsh will be heard with a stiff upper lip. I think of myself as primarily a songwriter. Check it out: Las Chicas Mas Finas Thanks! EjA |

DesertDude I can't get to your tunes.
Here's a wierd scenario....I just updated Final Cut Pro 4.1 and to do that I needed Quicktime 6.4 and for those you need Pro App. 1.1 GAWD fricking versions & updaters!!!! Well I didn't want Safari, but got it anyways. Now it controls ALL mp3's on the web! My IE can't play any of them. But, I can't log in to Digi thru Safari? I have to go thru IE!! WTF Is it me or is Safari like----LIGHTIN' FAST!!!!! Hey Dimi tune sounds cool man, I really don't like disecting people's mixes. (Bands like and want certain instruments at different levels!) But I'm sure someone here will chime in on it! |
Re: Mac Mixes!!!!!!!!
Try this: Musicdude
Safari is the way to go on most sites IE is getting long in the tooth. Go to your pref's and enable tabs. great for switching pages. I have no prob going to the DUC |

SSRjazz:
very good songs; sounds like they belong on the radio, great job. I agree with Roy there's a lot of low end on the recordings. Great job though. Toddamo, very good call on hooking up with that singer, she's fantastic. I love that middle eastern quality of the music and the sound of the language itself, great work. I'd love to hear what kind of gear/techniques you used. Aussie, I liked "let's go" and "think of you". The production of "Think of You" was my favorite of the two; nice song, nice job on the acoustic guitar. What did you do for the drum sound? PAM; very cool tune, great sound. Would love to hear more about how you produced it. bp. |

As you proberly guest its a very complex session but I´ll try to give you a general view of the session.. The session consists of 50 tracks, - 32 audio and the rest aux returns and busses. Session is 24 bit.. The sounds on the track is mostly Korg Triton and Roland JV blended with real string recording I´ve done. All strings/synth is recorded through TC compressors with very light compression before going through tubes and into PT on seperate tracks..Pre amps used is Studio Projects VTB.. Some tracks is beefed-up with some duble-tracking, - there are all in all around 20 string tracks in the session (4 duble), - each track has been treated differently, eq, comp etc. Horns/woods has around 4 tracks, piano 2 tracks, fx/voice 3 tracks, drums 3 tracks. Hope this gives you some idear of the session.. |

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Roy & BP...
Thanks for the kind words on the two tracks with my friend Rachel. Regarding equipment used...Rhode NTK, Roland XP-30 keyboard, Lexicon MPX-100, Squire Jazz Bass and the drum loops come from MultiLoops. In terms of how they came together...this women has written hundreds of songs which live in her head and also in fragments on a Minidisc. She really has a very advanced musical mind for someone that doesn't have any musical training. So she comes to me with songs and she sings them section by section. I pull out the acoustic guitar and write changes for each section. In some cases (like on Ani L'dodi ) her structures are fairly complex and precise. I've just learned to trust her instincts. So I when I have the general structure down...I record loops, guitar, piano and bass. From there its lead vocals and overdubs...Lots of work involved but really pure joy. One of my favorite aspects of working with ProTools is that I never really know how a song is going to come out until the end. My methodology in terms of arranging is like throwing a lot of paint at the wall. I layer a lot of background melodies and vocal harmonies and strings and counterpuntal stuff...etc. Then during the mix...I try to pair it all back into a cohesive unit. I usually go through 4-5 mixes until I'm almost happy. Now...Hey Tito...as I been typing all this I've been grooving to this 'Bastard Dub' Track...REALLY nice. I'd very much like to hear about what tools you used and what your process is like. Beautiful bass sounds and patterns. Deep! -todd amodeo http://bartlebymusic.com |

Well I sarted in Reason 2.5. Are you familiar with it? I'll assume you are. So I took a rex loop I sampled and fed it through some delay devices, just foolin' around to show my friend how cool Reason is. His friend told him it sounded flat so I flipped on my 15' JBL eon monitor and began dispelling that myth. I added the little 4 bar guitar plucking sample and smiled. It was sounding pretty fresh. The delay was out of sight so I decided to try my hand at dub. I've made hip-hop ragga beats for my boy Ragga P(vocal snippits in Bastard Dub) but that's as close to Reggae producing I ever got. So what's the next most important aspect of dub? The bass of course. I used a sine wave with the Subtractor synth(Reason) and ran it through the Malstrom synth(Reason) to bring it out. The Malstrom is a synth that can also be used as an effects device. I then sequenced the 2 bass parts and the foundation of my song was built. I made the alternate drum parts in the Redrum(Reason) drum machine. It started with an interpolation of the old Al Green drum loop. Then I reggaeafied it with some shuffle and whatnot. So at this point I decided it needed a little piannee. Not piano, pianee(as the Simpsons episode goes). I loaded a Reason NN-XT patch I made of the bright pianno sound I made from my Groovebox. I've been spending a lot of time lately extracting sounds from it. Thought I better use one to justify all the time. I layed the chords down, then the sketchy pianee solo. (Read:"Lament of the Beat Programmer" thread from the Mac side for an explination of my piano skills. I added the vocal snippits, sprinkled in a few more elements(vibes, clavenet) and called it a song. Then I automated the delay effects in Reason. Next, yes there's more, I ReWired the tracks into Pro Tools, ajusted the levels and eq'd it with the Digirack eq's. Then I added some more delay with a Digirack plug, eo'd the master fader a bit, added a little limiter, dither, and bounced to disk. I imported my bounced file into iTunes, converted it to mp3 there, then posted it. Was that too much information? Those are the secrets of the Bastard Dub. Peace, ~Tito |
Re: Mac Mixes!!!!!!!!
Hey Dimi,
Nice sound. Kinda reminds me of rush or something. Sorry if I'm way off, I listen to hip-hop y'know, but me likes. I kinda wanted the guitar to come out a bit more(i think) on the mixing tip but good work overall. Keep up the nice drumming. ~Tito Bastard Dub |

Thanks for the kind words. The drums are done in Reason, using some one-hit samples that Roy gave me a while back. They are nice samples, very realistic IMO. |

Just listened to '?????'(interesting title... ), great guitars, and I like her voice very much. I'm about to listen to the other 2 songs as well. Good stuff. thanks, Roy |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Roy,
The "??????" was only workname in start of session , and I used to ask several times what was the name of song, but they didn´t know. So they printed in cover "??????" and that´s it I like her (Maria) voice too.. and not just the voice, it was very nice to record vocal parts in middle of the nights and early hours of morning with her But I look forward to your comments to other tracks, thanks |

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Jeff
A few comments that I hope will help you. These are my opinions only, and I'm no pro. So take them as you will. 1.) I Need You. - Nice song. Back off the highs on the vocals, they get very harsh to my ears. He has the sort of voice I like to add a bit of color to, and that usually involves rolling off the tops. When all the instruments come in, the vocals almost disappear. This suggests to me that you have some fairly heavy compression happening on the master fader. The heavy instruments come in and the comp squashes the crap out of everything and the vocals (lighter parts) get burried. Here's a little trick I have learned. bus ALL your instrument tracks to a stereo AUX track and put compression/limiting on there. Then bus ALL you vocal tracks to another stereo AUX track and add separate compression/limiting there. This way you have total comtrol over the two sides of the song. You can compress the crap out of the music without harming the vocals, which generally always need much lighter compression. This leaves the master fader for last stage EQing, stereo imaging etc. etc. 2.) I Will Prevail. - This is a really pretty track. Well played and mixed. Are the acoustics DI'd? It sounds like they are, but it sounds sweet. Thanks for posting. |
Here\'s mine
Feedback most welcome!
The track "Cabbage" is the most finished..... http://homepage.mac.com/audiophiliac/ |

What are you listening to the song with?.. Headphones, Home Stereo?, etc? I don't have any problems hearing the vocals when the instruments come in. I do find that sometimes listening through headphones will sometimes give me an impression that the vocals are getting lost, but when I listen through a stereo or monitors, that's not really the case. I only have a 1.4 ghz processor so I have to bounce my final mix to disk then make a new session and master that. I'm using waves mblim, mbeq, rverb, and then an L2... there really isn't much compression going on with the L2....it's just there to give the hotter signal and ride out the peaks. My ears are REALLY picky about overcompression...drives me nuts when I hear it...so I try not to overdo it. I usually strive , 1) Keep most instruments as 'natural' sounding as possible unless I'm going for a specific effect. and 2) To get that nice crisp eq curve that most major label recordings have......really so it sounds you're sitting right there in the room with that band...except at a comfortable listening level. .might have pushed the high end just a little this one tho... I do find that sometimes I'm fighting with the vocal / music levels sometimes tho...I'll have to try your suggestions on some of the songs I'm having problems with. If I have a lot of vocal tracks, like on the gospel choir recordings I'm doing...I'll sub-mix the vocals down into aux tracks (one aux for lead vox, another for the choir). Gives me something else to try. =) Quote:

Thanks for listening and for the great suggestions! |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Hi Jeff
Yes, I was listening through cans, (but they are high end, Beyerdynamic DT770 pros) because the speakers on my home computer suck, and my 4yo son sleeps in the next room LOL. You can still use that split compression technique on your system. Just bounce the music and vocals separately so you end up with two bounced tracks. Then put the two in your mastering session and take it from there. The technique is known as "2+2 mastering". There is a pro mastering engineer in Florida (Bill Roberts) who prefers to master this way. Gives him heaps more control. Anyway, keep posting. I'd like to hear more. |
Re: Mac Mixes!!!!!!!!
Greetings to all. I am new to the forum and to audio engineering. I am a bit timid about submitting this example of what we (our band) are trying to accomplish using a Mac(OS9), PTLE and a couple of Mics (thru Mbox). Before submitting I read EVERY THREAD and listen to EVERY SAMPLE. Some really good i.e., GOOD stuff out there. Also took time to read as many profiles (of members) as I could squeeze the time for. Impressive group. Everyone please feel free to offer any (good or bad) opinions and, or, suggestions as I am a spunge. Here it is....(after arriving at the site click on "RUNAWAY").

Hi Tito
Thanks!
The guitar was recorded live, not within reason, sorry! Can't remember much about the guitar, but it went straight from the 'pod' into the 001, our wah was bust, so we used the automatic one in the pod. I had cut the drums live to begin with, but my sounds were wrong, so I just programmed it in reason, and bounced it into PT. My gear is as follows: Emu E-Synth workstation Novation Nova My own drums/percussion (congas/djembe/shakers etc) Creative Essentials rfl.s for reason (great sounds!) So: reason for drums, esynth/nova for bass sounds, nova for wacky sounds, percussion live, all going through the Mackie into PT. (reason with rewire into PT) I love your stuff too, remember it being the first thing I'd heard/seen from the DUC and being REALLY impressed(about 5/6 months ago?) Anyway, cheers Tito! Andrew |
