how to update 888 24 i/o; Pro Control

Greetings.

My Pro Tools v 5.13 system with 888 24, 1622 i/o with Pro Control running on Mac G4 is locking up, even after repeated trashing of preferences, re-installing Pt.. (yes I know its old..)

I realize I need to upgrade the computer and PT version but want to keep as much hardware as possible for cost savings.

my question is:

what PT version and mac computer will match my 888 audio cards and pro control? I realize there is no warranty if I buy used but I cannot afford to buy an new system and the pro control alone cost me $10K.

Thank you

a G4 is it for the computer for your cards (I'll assume Mix cards)
you could go to OSX 10.3.8 and PT 6.4.1 but can't say it overly worth it, you would need plug-in updates that may not be available any more

if you found a deal on a used PCIe core card & 192 you could get a Mac Pro and go up to PT10 and be more or less current, run you 888 or 1622 (1622 might not work off of the Legacy port) off of the Legacy port of the 192 and your Pro Control but you lose some plugs that did not make it up to OSX

have you tried a complete reinstall including the OS?
what model G4?
have you cleared the PRAM and pressed the CODA button?

On the other hand, 6.4.1 would bring automatic delay compensation and the OSX itself would not be all that ancient, compared to the Classic.

That said, I would try reinstalling the OS first as keeping a working system is probably the wisest move. The newest computer compatible with those cards has been made over ten years ago, so upgrading to latest G4 would still not promise you more stability.

But consider PCI-X era G5 and original (PCI-X) HD core card. That coupled with a HD interface will also support your legacy interfaces on the legacy port. It will max at OSX 10.5.8 and PT 8.0.1 and is still pretty well supported by plugin companies.

Automatic Delay Compensation was not added for MIX systems. The qualified OS for v6.4.1 was OS v10.3.4. I ran systems on OS 10.3.9 without a problem. The one thing to be wary of is QuickTime. This was a period in time where it seems anything Apple did with QuickTime could break Pro Tools.

personally I stay as far away from G5s as possible, I only had problems with them

Yes, the latest version for MIX systems is 6.4.1, which was only officially qualified with 10.3.4, but will run fine on 10.3.9, as long as you don't update quicktime. Jonathan is correct, ADC is not available for mix systems, you need an HD core for it to work.

Going to 6.4.1 if you keep your mix hardware is an easy transition if all of your plugins are authorized via ilok. If you still are using floppy auths, I would just stay on OS9 unless you are going to upgrade your hardware. There's really not much of a difference, both 5.1.3 and 6.4.1 are very stable.

Your Pro Control will work up to PT10, according to AVID they will not work at all with PT11, so if you do upgrade hardware and want to keep your ProControl that's something to be aware of.

Okay, I will stand corrected. Remembered the version right though :)

Thanks for the great input. How about this pathway... I believe I can keep all my hardware this way and do it cost effectively..

1. I am going to upgrade my G4 os from 9.1 to 10.3 -panther- (found on ebay new in box) then

2. order the PT 6.4.1. TDM upgrade online at http://shop.avid.com/store/product.d...24175094474352

does the #2 above include all I need? Just pay, download and install?

I will have to download it on my pc, put to flash drive via usb and copy to my G4, as the G4 is not connected to the internet.

Ideas? Concerns? Really appreciate the tech support

One note: when I try to re-install 5.1.3 from my original disc it locks up on "digitest", and says "bad disc".

when I try to open PT 5.1.3 update downloaded off the avid site it hangs up on "tdm " part.

is it possible to get a replacement 5.1.3 disc? maybe that is the real issue, I have re-installed os 9 on my G4. According to the posts I may lose my plug ins, auto tune, waves etc

Re: how to update 888 24 i/o; Pro Control

5.1.3 is no longer available. So if your install disk is bad, you really have no choice other than to upgrade to 6.4 unless you can find a second hand 5.1.3 installer with serial number.

As I mentioned already, the main problem with going from 5.1.3 to 6.4.1 is plugin compatibility and/or authorization method. Any plugin you have that is not authorized via ilok is going to be a problem. You can try contacting the manufacturers to see if they will give you an ilok version in exchange for your floppies, but at this point I think most of them will tell you that they don't support the old versions anymore.
