Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

G'day Tim
I agree with both comments above. I think the main problem with the vocal volume is that there is a bit too much reverb on them. Rev can make vox sound louder than they are.
The guitars could be thinned out a bit (EQ) and this will give them a bit more separation.
Drums sound obviously canned when they go into the fast snare roll parts. Maybe lower the volume and up the rev at these points to blurr it a bit?
Track has lots of potential. Good work.

Frank
Definately sounds like an opener to me. Nice clear clean mix.

My studio is just out of a little town called Fish Creek in southern Victoria. It's only a few minutes drive from Wilson's Promontory which is the southern-most part of mainland Australia.
I look out the window in the studio and look over rolling green hills. Great place to make music.

Roy, I know its a little late, but I just heard your tune with the Motorcycle Samples(I think its caleld Burn?). Cool tune man. Has a neat little industrial edge to it. Wonder what took me so long to hear it? I supposedly downloaded it 3 or more months ago according to my computer.

Metaltim - WitchQueen is cool. Sounds very Frank Zappa to me. (That's a compliment - I'm a big Zappa fan.) Definitely back off on the vocal level. Serious drum work!

Frank - I liked AM Jam. Good sense of melody on all the instrumentals.

Did you say it was a live take??

What did you use to capture the horns, what processing if any did you use on them?

ROY,

Just downloaded Moonebeam Seduction. Cool tune. What kind of effect is that on the guitar? It almost sound like a wah pedal and talkbox mixed or something. I'm new to recording and like music similar to yours. What kind of recoding gear are you using? Oh yeah, was it you that played Sleepy Moon also? That ended up on my MP3 player and I listen to it in the car a lot. Cool guitar tunes.

The sound I'm sure you mean is a Digitech RP2000 Guitar processor with a light flange/phase on it, and I'm using it with Digi001/5.3. 'Sleepy Moon' was the first thing I posted here. Thanks very much for the compliments. I really appreciate it.

Yep, that track, and the rest that go with it took a while to grow on me too.
They are by an outfit called "Barron Von Zipper" from Melbourne. The main 'dude' is a mate of mine, calls himself "Pugsley Buzzard Wateringcan". He actually hails from Perth originally (studied piano at uni there. Is there a Perth Con? If so, that's where he was). Anyway, I'd been promising him a day in the studio, so he brought him band in (3 piece) and away they went. There material is very 'Zappa' as you can hear. The general structure and direction of their tracks is rehearsed, but inside that it is pretty much improvised.
Anyway, they recorded about 8 songs in a live situation, did a couple of over-dubs (not much though), and then a couple of weeks later, Pugsley posted me some horn charts. I got a couple of mates in and we put the horns over the top.

Horns were recorded thus...
Alto & Tennor Sax - MXL V67M - Mindprint Di-Port - Digi001
Trumpet & Trombone - Beyer Opus83 - Mindprint Di-Port - DIGI001

Apart from a touch on Waves RenVerb, there's no processing on them at all. Being a freebie session, I wasn't prepared to get too fussy.

The guitar is an old knocked-around Fender Strat through a Musicman combo amp. He also had a bag full of the most amazing array of FX pedals I've ever seen in one place! He set up a new selection every track, so I couldn't keep up with what he had.

Glad you enjoyed the track. As you can imagine, they were fun to record.

That sounds like it would've been a blast, Mark. I produced a New Orleans jazz thing once, with trombone, trumpet, and clarinet all playing at once, totally ad lib, and it was great. I believe the engineer just put up two mikes in the room. One rehearsal, one take, and that was it. It was a pleasure how well it went.

joz, i am in awe of that song. it is what i personally like to hear.

i think the best trait was the guitar being distorted or on overdrive.....it adds so much to the piano and gives it that real ROCK sound i love.

its a great song that has a different sound from everything else here on the DUC. GOOD JOB

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Hey Joz
That's a great track! Only a couple of suggestions...
The acoustic guitar at the start could come up a bit. The voice sounds a bit big in comparison.
At 24 secs there's a little jingly bit that makes me think there's some kind of rhythm thing coming in. So maybe get some shaker/hats thing happening through the second verse.
Also some of the elec guitar rhythm parts (especially the one panned hard left) is a bit quiet, to the point where it sounds wrong. To me it needs to come up or be left out.

All up it's a great track and is very commercial. Some excellent playing and singing. Keep it up.

awesome, joz. good job.

good: song, performance, recording, mix. there's only one thing missing. it sounds too good. you might want to throw 4 or 5 limiters on to get that "radio" sound... hehehe

Shivers all over!
Good balance between instruments and voice. Not that much of of a professional comment from me but you touched the string. Hope to get productive myself again after a couple of months, like your song. Without any technical point of view; just the way it sounds to me is in one word: great! A good song with no false pretences! Downloaded it and added to my DUC-collection>

I think there will be a few issues here.
1. I need to get a set of good monitors.
2. The drums were tracked to a Roland VS880 then dumped to a stereo mix and imported into PTLE
3. This music isn't your normal pop style stuff.

Any suggestions/comments are welcome.

stut5,

Thanks for the comments. Funny you mentioned the lack of a solo. We were talking about that the other day (lack of solos in the songs). So perhaps that will be addressed. We are supposed to start tracking for the entire CD soon.

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

YoungMoeses - Interesting track. Really cool work on the vocal effects. At the end, the track breaks down into that keyboard/drum thing that sounds too "Midi". If you can get the basic track to sound a little more "street", I think this would catch some attention.

Nice job.

Bjoneill - Progressive lives! Very cool song. The vocal seems a little too dry and out front compared to the rest of the track. Great BG vocal arrangements and chord work.

Love it. Good luck with the CD, and yeah, a solo might be nice.
