Re: Mac Mixes!!!!!!!!
Gorilla...
Thanks for the compliment! Yeah, that's me on my strat going direct into AmpliTube, with a big reverb insert on everything (guitars, bass, and drums). Didn't have any songs in the cooker at the moment, and wanted to give Live a quick test-drive with Drums on Demand. Drums on Demand is drum loops on CD, but they are a live drummer in a real studio, better than anything else I've heard. Check 'em out at http://drumsondemand.com/ |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Gday all
Thought I'd might join in and show you what we have been recording. The mix not finished yet - of course Let me know what you think of the song 'Alone'. I love constructive critisism. http://www.theshadowplay.com/audio/main.htm Thanks to you guys, you have made the recording run a little smoother! Duane |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
AfricanCaneKing,
I meant to ask you...what synth/software was used for the virtual strings on 'Get Right'? thanks, Roy |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
i actually used a cmobination of sources for the sounds in that song. the strings are a chopped up sample i had on a sample cd from years ago. i used the FM7 as a synth in acid and tweaked it to come up with original patches and i had the roland xp50 for the rest. oh i did use the mpc for the drums. i sampled them from the roland and used the filters on the mpc to make em sound the way they do. i think thats about every thing, i did that song over a year ago so some of it is still hazy
Check out the infamous AFRICAN CANE KING |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Duane,
I like the songs you have on there, Evanescense definitely comes to mind with the dark female lead. The only thing i can see, is maybe the snare drum could be a VERY small bit down on the reverb(it does have reverb on it correct?). Very solid recording though, my hats off to you, rock can be difficult with this kind of band trying to get them to have a BIG sound. The beginning of the song Faded Full is IMO very nice production, with the reversed piano hits, sounds amazing. anyways, thats just what i think. |
Re: Mac Mixes!!!!!!!!
I painstakingly program "live" drums from samples the way a drummer would play. Each hit is a different sample, and each drum has its own track. I use stereo samples for kick and snare, and mono for the rest. It's worth it in the end, it sounds pretty close to a live drummer. I also have been using Reason for loops, but sometimes I combine that with the live drum samples.
Here's a link to clips from my album coming out in July (hopefully). Everything was recorded on a digi001 with PT LE 5 in OS 9, Neuman TLM103 for vocals, Shure SM54 (antique) for guitars. All keyboards and loops are from Reason. Mastering on the samples is squashed to all hell. The album will not sound like this. We're two guys that write, play, record and mix everything ourselves. http://www.mad-machinery.com/media/ |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Hello everyone,
Sorry I haven't been here to hear all your wonderful music recently. I was on vacation in Mexico for a while. And then I've been working on a theater production for May. I would very much appreciate your checking out one of the songs for this production. It was written by me and one of the actors, an extraordinary singer named Bonita. The song is called UNTIL THE END OF THE TIME And you can find it here: http://pages.stern.nyu.edu/~tamodeo/until.html I would very much appreciate your thoughts and suggestions on the track. Equipment used: Roland XP-30 keyboard, Rode NTK Mic, Lexicon MPX-100, BetaMonkey Drum Loops, T-Racks Mastering Suite. Thanks very much for listening! -todd amodeo |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Hey guys.. In my Prescription Drug induced state here at home, i have created this little mostly guitar based number. It seems ive been getting more into acoustics lately. Thats cool...
Anyway, if you have time, the song is called "My Angel" and it is located: http://www.agenda-entropy.com/duc.htm Thanks for listening if you have time. Im looking to get some sort of instrument at the last minute of the song, I dont know if I want a real flute, or maybe some real strings.. Gene..? =-Ben |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Ben, can you write music?
If you can scribe out a basic flute line, I have a flautist coming in sometime in the next couple of weeks. Will be easy to lay down a quick track for you. All I need is a basic idea of what you want and she'll embelish it a little. Let me know. I'm at work right now, but I'll have a listen to the track when I go home for lunch. |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Hey Ben,
I am downloading it right now and will let you know via an e-mail. Take Care, Gene |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
hey Gene, i hope you have a working email,
[email protected] works the best. ----- Aussie, I do not know musical notation. Or how to write it in any form on paper. In the past I have just played what I would like to be played on a piano or something, and sent that sound file to the player to transcribe onto his/her instrument of choice. In this case though, I was looking more for someone who had a feeling for the music, and wanted to improvise on thier own over it, as opposed to me writing the part for them. Hows that sound..? Thanks, =-Ben |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
No probs Ben. I really don't know if she improvises or not. I'll stick it in front of her when the time comes and see what happens.
I might even get an alto sax player to have a look at it. I know he can impro. Or how about John Rees (of Men At Work fame) playing violin? There's actually enough time and space in there for a couple of instruments to share it. I'll let you know how I go. One quick comment on the track. The low vocal that comes it at 00:24 and 00:57 is very boomy and a bit loud. But obviously the mix isn't complete and you probably know this. |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
yeah, I was thinking about this when I listened to it back.. For some reason, I didnt EQ the chorus vocals.. and I need to run over the vocals again. I was high on Vicadin when I was singing and it all sounds a bit funny now that I listen to it back. Even some of the electric guitar is a bit...ick..
hehe. Thanks a bunch =-Ben |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Todd -- So what is this musical about? Pretty strange theater material (not bad, just odd). Not that I really know anything about musical theater. I guess it’s been a long time since “Surrey With The Fringe On Top!” I really like the exotic melody in the verse and the overall surreal vibe. And that singer has a magnificent voice! Nice job.

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Groovilator,
Thanks for checking the track! Yea...this ain't your parent's musical theater. ;-) It's really not a 'musical' per se. It's avant-garde theater that involves music and video...intense lighting and set design too. There will be a website up online soon but until then there's this description: http://www.synaesthetic-theatre.com/...n/upc_was.html I hope some DUC people in the NY/NJ/CT area can make it. We run from May 19th to May 29th in Greenwhich Village. And yea...this actor/singer FLOORED me. I'm looking forward to starting up a collaboration with her once the production is over. If you missed the track, here's the site for that again: http://pages.stern.nyu.edu/~tamodeo/until.html Thanks again for the cool comments! -todd |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Hi, All!
Las Vegas spat me out, so I need some cool down time. I know no better way than listening to the latest stuff, personally I think Digidesign would be smart to create a radio station with all of these songs playing. What better way to advertise the digi than with these awesome songs??? Do the mac people do anything like this? I'm afraid to go over there! So I'm going through page 73 and 74 today, listening to the songs. I'll try to leave comments with names to make this easy. Sorry if I miss anyone. Roy "Howlin' Wolf" Howell I'm listening to Madness and Magic... Just great. You have the most distinctive guitar sound since Santana, and it always works with your songs. I read somewhere else that those mandolins are samples, I never would have beleived that. Are you selling the mando sample session? And Hey, do any of your songs have vocals? I don't know why, but I want to hear what you sound like... I'm totally a lyrics type. Rogerio, I really dig the Wallace clip. That's very fun. Autohypnosis - I guess you pulled the song, I'll have to wait to hear the finalized version. I really like the 'hypnotics' on the website. Great style. Could they be clickable to full-sized versions? I'm listening to some of the other tracks on your site. I really like Fractured Painting. The comb filter sound in the drums is great. I really like the digital scramble in the first lines... how'd you do it? Oh, cool synth solo too. BadPoison - I like this track a lot. I agree that maybe the levels are a bit hot, there's this kind of booming, lofty reverb sound to it that's not really working for this song. Try stepping back all of the levels by ten db and bringing them back up again. The electric (wah?) guitar is great, but also comes out a little distant, and feels sort of missing in the mix. maybe a little high-end boost could bring it forward a little. (Although maybe if the reverb was different or not there, it wouldn't feel like that.) The lyrics are great though, and the vocal performance is really good, though I would agree that it comes in a little too energetic. If you resing that, you may try a lower-key first verse. or just the first line, really Great melody, and I really like the timbre of your voice. This sample reminds me of the song 'babylon' by someone. But I like this a lot better. Your voice is really right for the songs you're writing. (Am I the only one getting only 44 seconds? Is that by design? I don't mind if it is, but could you mention in the post that you're cutting it short so we know it's not a tech issue?) groovilator-I get a 404 file not found. Ah, keep reading! I sees now! Hey this song is cool! I'll do a cross. Hmm. I'd say a cross between Rollins Band and Suicidal Tendencies. Well, that analogies' missing something, but it's a real rocker! I think it's actually a really good 'sound', kinda an update to punk. I might suggest the heavy guitar riffs be a little crunchier, that would make them more punky...is that a marshall? Oh, and great vocal performance... You might try doubling it or comp'ing it during the chorus to give it more power. Love the last bit! EyeCBatty - Reggae Dancehall! That's gotta be a first for this thread! Cool Song! (I mean Phat! (I mean Dope! (I mean Tight! (God I'm so white!))) Javier Mendoza - This music's great. I can believe you're getting radio play, this is radio-ready! Good production, I'll buy a copy as soon as I make up for some of my losses in vegas! Hey, and why is there only one song without a clip? It makes me really curious to hear the backporch blues song! Micah - People on the streets is great, can't wait to hear it done. I can't add to what's been said, except to say I _have_ tried writing that kind of music, and it came out nothing close to that good. I also listened to your previous song, I think it's good, but the vocals are too hot or there's too much compression on them or something that's giving them a strange distortion at times (longer held notes) that doesn't seem to fit. This may just be me, but It feels like you're trying to add more power to the vocals, try leveling instead of compression, and add doubling or chorus subtly underneath it. Ok, that's all the time I have for listening to music... Great stuff guys, this is truly the best resource for a diverse array of new music. I'm posting a song tomorrow (well, hopefully, the server's down right now), I have a new 'Retro Techno' album coming out called "House of Slovenly Truth." I haven't picked tracks to put up yet... Does anyone here make or listen to techno music? I would like to ask you some questions. Especially on mastering. I'll ask the room when I can post it. Anyway, I'll post that as soon as I can upload data to the site, see ya! -Olaf |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Thanks Olaf...I hope Vegas 'spat you out' with a few bucks left... ...if I'de gone with you, I'de probably be hitchhiking home about now, penniless.
I really appreciate the good comments... -Roy MilesWonderland, I finally got to listen, and I see why Mark was impressed. Each one I heard was really good. Nice job indeed. -Roy Toddamo, Cool piece...I think this will be very interesting in a theatre settting, with the right lighting, etc. I really like some of your chord changes, and the vocals. Nice work. Post more pieces from it if and when you can. -Roy |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
hey olaf, i was cruising through Roy's music and found one with some vocals on it, a very fun piece called Cellphone Blues, im not sure if its Roy or not, but its definitely worth a listen, in fact....im listening to it right now!

Check out more stuff from The Cane king
True Love: feat Jennifer Composed by BeJay, Engineered By African Cane Kng i recorded this the other day and havent had the chance to mix it properly apart from the template plugin/presets i use. The Champ: Feat Cassim, composed by Bejay, recorded and engineered by African Cane King i recoreded this a few hours ago, and im looking for feedback, i personally think the chorus could be better, but the verses are good, any feedback is appreciated. ps before ripping the sound quality a little disclaimer: THE Afro Cane is not Responsible for the quality of recordings made a few hours ago |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Hey guys,
This is my first post on this thread. This is a song I wrote and recorded last year on a friend's Digi001 system (before I bought mine). The drums and bass are samples played on a keyboard. I am playing all instruments and doing the vocals. This is not really typical of what I normally write, but it was written during a breakup with my wife so it sort of reflects that. I am not a vocalist so any pointers in that direction would be helpful. Tear it up guys! --joe Little Miami |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
groovilator,
Yep, that's Paul Curtiz(Belgium DUCer/great singer/writer) on vocals on 'Cellphone Blues'. The intro to that song was the reason we wrote the song. I was just basically jamming with a room mike on, and my cellphone rang, which messed up the recording. Instead of killing my phone, I decided to keep that intro and have it kick into some harder blues. I asked Paul if he would sing it, and the next day he sent those lyrics and killer vocals. I didn't try to make the production perfect. We just had fun with it. The cool thing is, Paul just completed video/music work on a new documentary movie about 'bikers' in Belgium, and he used that 'Cellphone' guitar intro in the movie.(and another song of mine). So that's gonna be cool. Rabidium/Olaf, On the mandolins...I played the mandolins on 'Madness", but I originally played them in another song of mine. I 'lifted' my own tracks to do 'Madness and Magic'. So in that sense only, they're samples. But also, at the time when I recorded them, I created a few scales of one-note mandolin samples (by miking the real mandolin, one note at a time). Then Bastiaan created an NNXT refill using these mando samples for me, so they can be played on keyboard. They work really well for some things. thanks, Roy |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Joe,
Glad to see you posting your stuff...nice song...I like the mood you set up with it. Maybe you can find somebody around here to resing it if you're not quite satisfied with the vocal. What kind of 12 string are you using on it? thanks, Roy |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Thanks Roy,
Actually that is a 6 string Seagull that I double tracked. I intentionally tried to play a little behind on the second take to make a little chorusy (is that a word) sound. I did end up putting a small amount of chorus from a plug on both takes and panned them full left and right. I rolled off everything below 80Hz to lose the boominess. (I think it was 80, it might have been higher) Tell me honestly, do the vocals sound as bad as I think they do or is this just the typical hyper-critical stance most people take when they hear their own voice? Thanks again. --joe |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Hey Jo (sounds like a good name for a song)
Good job on the track. Sounds great. I think your vocals are fine. And really they are the kind of lyrics that no one else will do justice to. They are probably too personal to you to be sung by anyone else. |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Thanks Mark,
I appreciate that. Most of the songs I wrote at that time were all pretty personal and assuredly mean more to me that anyone else so you may be right. I *was* hoping that my voice fit the mood of the song. How do you guys take a song that starts out very personal and make it more broad in appeal? I mean, the kind of song that when you hear it on the radio you say, "yeah, that's exactly how I feel". Do you get what I am asking? --joe |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
AfricanCaneKing,
I think you're doing a good job with these mixes. I like the instrumentation and the groove in both of these. Is the guitar in 'The Champ' from Reason? Good job... -Roy |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Hi, guys, glad to see my lengthy comments were helpful to some. It's nice to give feedback, and it helps me focus on what's important to me in music. All of the music here is really good.
So I have a new album May 1st, it's a little different from what I normally hear here, but hopefully some of you will give it a chance. It's basically a full album, meaning I don't have a single to offer, so for now I'm just going to put up the first ten minutes or so and see what you think. This is my Retro Techno album, it's called "House of Slovenly Truth", and its meant to be a deconstruction of sorts of techno music, through the filter of all the video games I played as a kid. Feel free to be honest and open with criticism/critiques, I won't take it personally. This isn't the kind of music I listen to, so making it has been an interesting dynamic for me. I'd love to get specific feedback on the mastering, because I've struggled with it, right now it sounds a bit harsher than I think it might, and the overall level may not be loud enough. Tell me what you think! And if anyone here listens to/makes techno music, I'd love to chat or email personally, I think you can send me an email by clicking my name. House of Slovenly Truth -Olaf |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Olaf, I only got about 15 seconds of it. Sounded cool but what happened to the other nine minutes and 45 seconds? Also can't get your website when I click on your link. Damn computer boxes!

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Heerz u phun wun phor phans uv phonky phewzhun. Recorded around 6 years ago with bassist Jeff Plant and drummer Matt Thompson (who now tours with King Diamond) while we were all students at the University of North Texas (in case you're wondering - yes, I knew her). Live trio recorded by a not-very-serious engineer onto ADAT. First take sucked and was trashed. Second take was golden. Transferred it to my Tascam MKII cassette 8-track so I could work on it along with some other stuff I was recording. I overdubbed a rhythm guitar track - clean tone with Rotovibe - and Jeff overdubbed his bass solo. Left it alone for a few years then several months ago transferred it into PT. I think my friend Danny did some mixing on it at some point then I messed with it...anyway, cool jam with some particularly raucous interplay toward the end. I've always been pretty pleased with the guitar tone on this in spite of the rather humble rig: Carvin DC127 w/ Seymour Duncan humbuckers, Dean Markley practice amp, Boss Blues Driver, Morley volume.
Can't seem to get a direct link to the track. Just click below and scroll down to "Well You Needn't." -------------------- tonyreymusic.com/secret_page...ssshhh |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Just set up an Mbox on another computer. We did a quick test session. This is also my first session that is tracked totally through my new Buzz Audio preamp.
It's a Shadows goes British type instrumental. Very quickly done and the only plug-in effect is some delay on the lead guitar. Guitar is a $50 Les Paul style copy through a little Roland box. An EV RE38N/D sits in front of that and sends its signal to the Buzz and then to the Mbox. The bass is a cheap SX plugged straight into the Buzz. A Waves RenComp is on the channel but that's it. The Organ is a Roland GR33 guitar synth, again into the Buzz instrument inputs. Drums are just some simple loop beats from a Zoom RT123. No eq in sight. Just an L2 on the master fader. It's raw, but it's meant to be. Enjoy Here it is! |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Hey Groov
Great jam. Must have been a buzz to play. It's a pitty the drums have that background sound. He's obviously a great player, As you all are. I enjoyed it immensely. Thanks for posting it. |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Hey Joe,
I think I'm like you I know I can sing people say I can sing but I hate my voice on playback. You sound perfect for the song, and this coming from a guy who likes band written - anti singer/songwriter stuff. Once again good song I listened to the whole thing (not typical for me). If it helps..... you remind me of Cat S. with a hint of Neil Y. vocaly. |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
BTW Here is my little bit for you all. As you will see if you go to the band site we dont have tones of great big name gear for recording but what we have worked well.(BTW yes thats alot of Behringer stuff including the MX9000 console).13 Tracks Recorded on a D24. only 3 mixed so far...hard to please 4 painfully anal performers.

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Thanks Katoramone,
I don't like my own voice, that's for sure. Funny, I never thought of Cat Stevens or Neil Young although I did grow up listening to both of them quite a bit. Maybe in my older years their influence is poking through. Thanks again for the compliment and for listening to my music. I will listen to your stuff as soon as I am at a computer that has speakers. (I am at work and none of the systems have audio for some reason.) --joe |

Joe, really nice job on "Little Miami." Good song, good track and I agree with the cats on here who said the vocal was just fine. It does give it the kind of straightforward quality that this song demands. However...

Getting back to the song, it kind of reminds me of Jimmy Buffett (but in a good way) and really does cut right to a "that's exactly how I feel" experience that most people have had. Me, I've been married twice and it seems the most poignant moments of those relationships was the moment of realizing "this is over." So, thanks a lot for dredging that s$%& up for me, sol (sobbingoutloud). But seriously, folk, really good work and I always respect when one can lay one's soul so bare as this. BTW, since you mentioned that this is not what you normally write, I'm looking forward to hearing your other stuff. Don't make us wait! We want it now!
