In Praise Of Pro Tools!
 

We all have our gripes and bug bears with Pro Tools but obviously a good many of us have things we love about the program. So maybe a thread with good things to report on and plus points is due? So please post your Pro Tools praise!




I'll start with this. The chords track often doesn't get used as much as it might but for displaying less common chords and inversions (for guitar) it is priceless. Also, of course remembering exactly what chord goes where in the arrangement is more than handy :D

The Easiness of making 1 stereo track to 2 mono and vice versa.
Especially handy when manipulating the .omf files from the editors

Lot of good things about pro tools, I think one of the best is the GUI. I feel like I’m on an SSL console. It’s so easy to route, record and edit. None is as good as pro tools at this point.

Nothing comes close for basic editing vitesse. All of the pertinent shortcuts are single button, centralized around the left hand's natural resting position on the keyboard. This is what keeps me hooked.

Import session data combined with spot to location. Ask any Post mixer, no other DAW can do it as elegantly as Pro Tools.

As much as I want to leave PT.... Well, you've all heard this verse before.

Tons of great things. If I had to narrow it down to my favorites:

1. HDX offers the lowest latency, period. This is the most important feature for me and it is not even close.
2. Editing is precise, intuitive and easy
3. Track Freeze and Commit (sure other DAWs have this, but it is still AWESOME)
4. AAX DSP plugs have come a long way thanks to Plugin Alliance.
5. Tight integration between software and hardware

I can't think of another combination of DAW and hardware that comes close to beating Pro Tools HDX. I just tried Apollo and LUNA and that was a mixed bag. Logic Pro X with Presonus Quantum gets the latency down, but the GUI in logic pro and a litany of other things makes me not want to use it. In short, I can't find a solution that beats Pro Tools HDX.

Beat mapping. I havent used it a lot but when I have its worked a treat.
One project I had would never have worked out if not for that feature.

I see it as a pretty simple choice. If you’re just starting out making music or new to production, get Logic. If you want a true “studio in a box“, get Pro Tools.

It’s is really good on a lot of things. Love editing in the main window. So good. The 2020 improvements, like Folder Tracks and Dark Mode are welcome options and I’ve finally settled in with them. VI performance, particularly Kontakt is still a weak point compared to some other DAWs, but those of us with work to do mostly have ways of getting around it. There’s a lot I’d still like to see, but there’s a whole lot to love.
