Pts 6.4

Hi,

I have years of PTS files (ProTools 6.4) on a WinXP machine. The songs were made with a Digi01 and have lots of track notes (which guitar I used, patch info, other settings, etc) and automation.

My question, is there any version of ProTools that I can buy that will allow me to import my PTS 6.4 files intact (with everything)??

Failing that, is there a way to install a PCI card on a modern computer so I can continue using my current Digi01 and ProTools 6.4? Its not a great solution because then I'm just waiting for that old hardware to fail. : (

Thanks,
Karma

I think you need two things.

First, old system where you save your sessions with Mac/PC compatibility enforced. You can obviously skip this step if you did it already back in the day.

Second, I think you need PT10 to open PTS sessions but PT11 and later may be able to import session data into a new session.

Either way you need a perpetual license that has PT10/11/12/current license bundle. Subscription license cannot do this.

Bear in mind I have not tested this, it is all coming from my memory and I may be wrong.

You used to have to have PT10 to open old SD2 type PT sessions. Recently, v2020.x, PT finally got back the ability to open these sessions and convert the SD2 files to wav.

I just did a small check to confirm, and I was very disapointed to see that PT refused to open a session dated 2000. A session from 2004, was opened and converted fine.

So, it seems, from this short investigation, that the latest PT can open pretty old sessions, but there's a limit. Mac finder wont show me version info on the files, that's why I'm telling you the year of creation. 2000 - PTS, 2004 - PTF? I can't remember.

I'm guessing PT10 would open most old files. But I would have to fire up the old mac pro to check.

PT6 files are .pts, PT7-9 files are .ptf and PT10 and later are .ptx

Without checking cannot remeber earlier than PT6 as PT6 was the first on OSX

Note: He's on Windows, so Mac/PC compatibility is moot unless he's now on a Mac and there was no SDII files on Windows.

If I'm reading this KBA correctly, he can open *.pts files with the latest versions of Pro Tools. You can check this by using "Save Copy In" and then pulling down the formats available.
