USB keyboard in pro tools
 

Can't get my Yamaha PSR-225GM to work in pro tools LE. I can go to "Input Devices" from the menu and the keyboard will show up in the list along with the mbox 2. I make a MIDI track and aux track with an insert but nothing happens. The keyboard is plugged via usb into my computer. Help?

The usb cable will only transmit midi information, not audio. To actually hear the audio in Protools, you will need an audio cable from the keyboard to the Mbox. In this case, the "phones" jack serves as the audio out. You will need a Y adapter (1 stereo plug to 2 mono) to go into your mbox in stereo. You will then want to set up a midi track and an audio track. On the audio track, you will set the input to match the jacks of your Mbox where the audio cables are plugged in. You will then record arm both of those tracks to record both midi info and audio.

What does the Y adapter look like? I never thought I had to buy a new cable.

...and then 2 intrument cables to go from it to the Mbox.

Your keyboard is a consumer keyboard (no offense). More pro keyboards would have individual line outs for hooking up to an interface, mixer or PA.

The one you have uses the headphone out, and you can jerry rig it this way.

Yes, this keyboard is not top of the line which I believe is fine. I just want to use it as a MIDI keyboard by using virtual instruments. I think I understand what you're getting at. I looked at the manual online.

Are you saying the adapter in the link plugs into my headphone input? Then I use two TRS cables to plug into the mbox? one in DI and one in the TRS input??? :confused:

My midi to usb cable won't do the job?

Ok, hold on...

Let's get exactly what you want to do with this thing.

If you don't want to use the sounds coming out of the keyboard, then you do not need to bother with the extra cables. It sounds like you are trying to use the keyboard simply as a MIDI controller for virtual instruments, yes?

If it is showing up in Pro Tools, you should simply be able to create an Instrument track, open up a plugin like Xpand, and play away.

Yes midi controller for virtual instruments. I don't care for the sounds of my keyboard.

Sorry nst7, I didn't state my exact purpose for connecting my keyboard.

I have pro tools open but making an instrument track with an insert such as xpand2 doesn't work. Nothing is played through the program. I keep hearing I have to make a midi track as well as an aux track with my desired insert. And then change the inputs and outputs accordingly. That still doesn't work for me.

I think this problem isn't about technology but rather my understanding of how to properly setup my keyboard with pro tools.

An Aux track with a MIDI track is the "old" way of doing it. It's still possible to do it that way, though. You have to assign the input of the MIDI track from the desired instrument.

It should be very straight forward with an Instrument track, however. You should just be able to create an Instrument track, open Xpand as an insert, and play on your keyboard. It should be working if Pro Tools does indeed see the keyboard as an input device.

Perhaps the keyboard has a "MIDI mode" setting you need to switch to?
