Trashing Prefs & Restoring Prefs - Sticky?

Is there a sticky that walks you through what you need to RESTORE or reload after trashing prefs?

Will trashing prefs get rid of my I/O settings?

I know Peter Gates has a Pref trashing app, but after you've used it, what do you need to set back up in Pro Tools?

I don't want to proceed until I've written down all the info I'll need to restart PT, but I can't find a comprehensive list.

Thanks for any pointers! :)

I don't think it resets your I/O configuration, but you should probably save a copy of your I/O config anyway so you can easily restore it whenever you need to. Also, I think the Pref trashing app allows you to select exactly what you're trashing. Whenever I use it, I mainly just go into Preferences afterwards and restore my settings - not a big deal and doesn't take long. It's not something you should have to do a whole lot.

Thank you for responding, Chris!

I guess my question is: which settings will need to be restored after trashing prefs?

I want to make sure I've written everything down before I jump in!

Thanks!

Re: Trashing Prefs & Restoring Prefs - Sticky?

Trashing prefs will likely default IO, blank the Midi Studio settings and reset several settings(which are easy to reset if you make notes of your preferred settings). Here's how I deal with some of this stuff:

Since some things get deleted when you uninstall(like to solve a big problem, or to install a newer version), so I keep a folder that is NOT in the usual place, and save copies of IO settings and Midi studio settings, along with folders with all my session templates and track presets. As for IO, because I have 4 interface(2x HD IO and 2x 192 IO) using a mix of analog and digital, I save screen shots of all the various tabs to show how each interface needs to be set for all my stuff to work. If everything gets defaulted, I can restore hardware settings by referring to the screen shots and then in the IO setup section, I can Import Settings from my saved setup from my settings folder(which may or may not match the default settings folder).

Other stuff to reset:
Color Saturation-just double-click on the colored bit at the bottom of any track in the MIX window to bring up the color settings and click the saturation button.
Auto Save-it defaults to 10 versions and every 5 minutes(change to what you prefer; I save every minute and 12 versions)
Scrolling-this will default to none(change it in the Options menu)
Other stuff- is really a personal choice, so I would just save a text file with your preferred settings so you can just run down the list after trashing prefs.

I know this seems long winded(sorry, but there's lots to cover) but once you cover your tail with some notes, screen captures and saving copies of IO and Midi Studio stuff, it only takes a few minutes to reset everything when the need arises:o

Last 2 cents; if you are not saving drive images, you should(and you should do this ASAP). And while you are doing that for your system drive, you also need to be backing up every session(unless you don't care if they disappear one day.....and they WILL). If you use a separate drive for sample libraries, save images of that too. Since I make my living with this, I go the last mile by cloning my system drive to a second(identical) SSD. If I have a major meltdown, I swap out the system drive for the clone and go back to work. Total downtime? About 3 minutes:D

Thanks so much! This is exactly what I was looking for!
Now I can create a checklist & set aside the time to do it right.

As I said in my original post, this would make a great sticky post!

Thanks again!

Here's the sticky: http://duc.avid.com/forumdisplay.php?f=93

I usually just trash the DB and that's enough. trashing Prefs is the next level and will require resetting your personal choices. The DB just gets redone on your next PT start up. It's a good thing to do every couple of months but def if something needs burping.

Thanks! I will try trashing the DB first.

BTW, the link showed 3 stickys, but I couldn't determine which was the one regarding trashing prefs.

Just get his latest version of the app. It's a simple interface that you will understand quickly....basically just check the trash DB option for the PT version you have. From memory I believe he has a pre 12 option and then 12 option. or perhaps 10/11 is the dividing line. Sorry not at my rig. He's a great guy who will not even take donate $ for this useful tool.

Welcome to confusing world of the Avid Audio Forum...there's a lot of legacy detritus but we love our community.

BTW either of these are good and developed by smart users.
