EuControl -- copy/paste/move Soft Key settings?

I use Avid Control on my iPad and have a question regarding EuControl's functionality in programming Soft Keys...

Is it possible to copy the command function and tile labeling of a given soft key (or a factory soft key on a preset page) and re-assign it to another key? As my setup evolves it would be great to be able to move functions around that way rather than re-programming the new key from scratch, but I don't currently see any way to accomplish it.

Hopefully there's a way to do this, and I'm just missing something obvious at the moment. If not....well, here's a request to developers at Avid to add that capability to the EuControl app. It would be an enormous time saver.

From what I remember, completely revamping the Soft Keys editor is on Avid's list, but is a fairly large undertaking and has been superseded a bit by smaller improvements that can be implemented more quickly. But I think that we are likely to see this happen before too long, hopefully.

BIG +1

It would also be great if you could reshuffle panels in the Control app like apps on a phone screen.

I've been using EuControl for years now and it's always been very frustrating that there are no copy/paste functions for Soft Key panels, individual buttons, functions and labels.

If there were, it would make life much easier, and enable the creation of much more streamlined workflows.

As it is, the work involved in modifying and/or creating new panels of soft keys makes it just too arduous.

Please bring this application into the 21st century...

This is a consistent source of frustration for me as well.

It's obvious that the software designers do not actually USE the software or this would have been done on rev 1.

I did figure a workaround. You can edit the .xml file (windows) and move/copy/paste buttons but it is a PITA compared to a FEATURE called move/copy/paste

Sounds interesting bakerja - would you be prepared to share some techniques, methods, etc. for editing the .XML files please?

Sure. It's not rocket science. I was thinking about making a youtube video how to but let me try to explain in words.

This is for windows machines. I have no knowledge of how it works in mac land.

Eucontrol reads a .xml file when launched that has all of the commands for the tablet device. Open eucontrol, go to softkeys tab, click on "export". That will navigate to the default .xml file location.

Export your current status for safety backup in case you screw up while editing. I have needed this more than once. Next click "import" and a windows explorer should open, right click the file you want to edit and choose "edit". In my case, this opens the .xml file in wordpad.

The file looks intimidating at first but as you look through it, it becomes logical. Click "find" and choose a softkey name that is in your arsenal. I had created a softkey called "add mono audio" that creates a mono audio track using a saved track preset. To copy this softkey, "find" "add mono audio" and wordpad should navigate to that part of the .xml file.

Each softkey starts with <control blah blah blah blah and ends with </control. ( disclaimer, I am writing this on my phone and don't have access to my pc at the moment.) The softkey data is contained between the open (<control) and the close (</control) commands. Copy everything within open and close commands. Next determine where you want to copy it to. Each softkey on each page is numered from 1 to 24 (I think). "find" softkey 13 ( if that's where you want it to go, and paste over that softkey (remeber, everything between "<control and </control" then edit the pasted "softkey number" to 13.

Save the file as a new name in the same location as the original. Now you can "import" that file into your original file. Always remember to keep a safety backup of yor original state so you can always get back in case you mess it up.

I will update this when I have time and access to my audio system.
