I'm going through as much of these as I can and listening--they're all really cool, but for right now I have to mention how much I like Roy's "Mudcat Blues." Killer.

Fabulous Cracker Tones

I finally got some of our bands music up on the web. This is the first time I've been able to post any music.

All the cuts are basically live, I close mic'd everything and we just took a buch of takes. Then I mixed down the best takes. Only one of the guitar solos was an overdub. So it is all a bit rough but they have their moments and mistakes. So there are lots of rough spots but what the hell. I play 95% of the guitar solos, my friend sings. I wrote the instrumentals and he wrote all the songs with words.

We have studio sessions that are about 3/4 of the way recorded, then the mixing begins. Just remember studio cuts are on their way.

I'm working on the too much bass issue, I think a subwoofer is in my immediate future.

hey roy,

just a quick question...what are you using to get the signature Roy Howell guitar sound? is it amplitube? or stomp boxes? i really like the contour that it has, and am trying to find some similar tones...
thanks!

-ev

Ev,
I use a few different methods to get my sound, and I choose which one depending on the part I'm playing(of course). I do use a Digitech modeler sometimes, though I never use the factory presets. I edit or bypass most effects in it, and use fx plugins if I need them. If I use Amplitube, I have my own settings, and it's usually after I've played the part straight.(can't have latency while I'm recording). Those are the only 'modelers' I use sometimes. But I also often mike one of my 3 Fender amps...it just depends on the part.
A big thing for me is knowing my guitar's personality. I have a Strat that I know well and the custom guitar I had built. They're both great guitars, but I usually have in mind which one will be best for a certain part.
One thing I think is important, is not to bury the personality of a good guitar in say, pure distortion. (unless the part calls for it, but that should be rare). There's a fine line between clean and distortion, and in that place, you have the most control over a guitar's personality.
Enough rambling...

Telepc,
Thanks for the complement...I enjoyed your song, too. Keep posting your new stuff when you can.

Micah I listed to Joshua Caleb.this is definetly a heartfelt song for your son.You have honored him well in your writing and really good acoustic guitar playing.Beautiful job.

Later Stu

Micah...I agree...it's not easy to put something like this down in a song, but you did it, and did it well. I can relate, because I went through it...twice. Anyway, great song.

Stut5 and Roy,

Thank you for your kind words. I really appreciate them. Obviously the song means a lot to me. Thanks for the feedback.

Micah

John,
'I love Lesbians' is great...the chorus lyrics kill me... ...and the music is cool too. Tell me about your guitar setup if you would. Sounds great...still listening to some others when I can.
thanks, Roy

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Roy,

My guitar on that tune, if I remember right, is a fender strat. I modified the wiring so I can flip a mini switch and the back two pickups become a humbucker. It is a cool sound to add to a strat. Other than that is is a stock american standard. I'm using that humbucker switch.

I have a Rivera Rake Reverb amp, 55 Watts?, and 2 Celestian GT75 somethings... Channel one on the Rivera is like a marshal and channel two is like a fender. The Lesbians song demands channel one!

I also have a Los LoBottom Sub made by Rivera.

I usually run a Ywang Mamsteen (Spelling??) preamp pedal. It has two knobs and a foot switch. There is a overdive and a level knob. I really like the punch it gives my overall sound and I almost always have it on, but just enough to add some punch. A lot of the sizzle comes from this little gem. Any two knob preamp stomp box should do.

The mics: A Dragonfly for the Celestian Cab and a SM57? for the sub. They were both real close for all the tracks. I was trying to get as much separation as I could.

I think I gave it some DVerb on the mix but nothing else.

That guitar solo is one of my favorites... It just came together. It is one of those that I listen to and don't quite understand how it came out of me.... I never play quite the same thing twice but I'm half tempted to sit down and learn it!

Thanks for listening and the feedback is great to hear.

Happy Plucking!

John
