no problem, phil. in fact, i just moved it to a www share for easier download. not everyone is as handy with ftp as we may be...
http://basstardz.dhs.org/duc/duc_mus...efe/Strive.mp3

i agree with 7 about the snare... needs a little more beef. sounds like a M-16 of a snare. make it sound more like my good friend, Mr. One-Niner-Eight ...

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Thanks Roy! I should (finally) have a finished product in hand next week. I can't complain too loudly as they really do good work, but DiscMakers seems to be going a tad slow on this one (going on 5 weeks now). Maybe they're really backed up with orders? Hmmmm.

Once that's taken care of, I should at last have a chance to sit down and listen to a lot more of the songs everyone else has been posting.

Phil - Love the track. Clarity is superb. Have to agree about the snare though. It's rather woosy for my liking. I like a snare with guts

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Mark, Darren, is the snare low on the whole track to you or just when the "crunch" guitars are going? I had thought they needed to come up in the crunchy parts - and I was going to verb it a bit, but the drummer liked it dry and lower... that's one of the reasons we're letting people hear it - to get their impressions so we can change things now (isn't PT and total recall WONDERFUL?). Anyway, thanks for listening - all comments welcomed - it's only going to help us make it better overall.

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Phil,
Great mix... on the snare, to me, more than anything, it's a touch too tinty, or thin sounding...and could come up a touch. I 'hear' a little fatter, yet still, percussive snare... but using this one, I would try to fatten it up, perhaps with EQ...
Everyone's an expert , I know...but that's my honest opinion.
I do say this only to bring it up to the quality of the rest of this fine mix...

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

i just listened again and i think the snare sounds ok after all. its actually the toms and kick that i don't like. they're very boomy and they overpower the snare.

i changed my mind. i do like the snare. its a bit low, volume wise, still.

Hey Phil,

I really like the vocal arrangement on the chorus, great job ! I also really like the transitions within the song you have really handled them well !!!

daB,

I just have not been able to get to your ftp site through a browser, maybe one of my settings ??? I usually get a server down or busy, try again later. I know I can hit ftp other sites. Thank you for moving it for http access. I also want to thank you for your tips page, it is extremely helpful !!!

Take Care,
Gene

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

I'm with Roy in that the tone is the problem rather than the volume. It needs to come forward, not up, so I think that reverb would probably hurt it more.
I also agree with Brian in that the boomy toms and kick probably aren't helping.

My taste only

Thanks Mark...I went through my Digitech modeler for this one. I actually put the solo down first (to a beat) before writing everything under it. That's an unusual way to record, but it helped make this piece more interesting... thanks again... ~Roy

Hey da Basstard..someone told me to do that last week [cleaning cookies out] and WOW. All the pop ups I used to get are GONE!! I use to have a problem getting on here at Digi....index page would freeze for about 30 secs. and it cleared up too! I surf the web using my PC!!!
Thanks for the comps Roy! Those guys are my buds!! I gave them what I call "The total Package"!
1. 16hrs. studio time
2. A "behind the Scenes" video of them recording in my lil' studio, I put it on their C.D.
3. A DVD promo pack//MTV style video//slideshow to one of their songs//Bio//extra funny bloopers!
4. And I did their (non-flash)website and hooked them up on MP3.com-that's where they wanted their stuff!
Hey Phil, I had their whole song on my website, but their fans went there and I have a free spot with small bandwidth, and it shut down every hour on the hour. So now there's a small 40sec. sample on the audio page there!
Oh yeah ROY I SERIOUSLY DIG THAT SONG MAN!!! I'm playing it right now--shuffling 'round my living room like Bill Cosby ! !

I can just picture that song playing on some end credits rolling out... in a BADD A$S Bruce Willis movie!!!!

Great job once again, Roy. Very nicely done. Nice to hear a guitarist who doesn't regard keyboards as his enemy, hehe. Everything I've heard you do has a certain idiosyncratic "Roy-ness" to it. I'd be hard pressed to put into words exactly what that is, but although each track is obviously different, they all kind of have your "logo" or "stamp" on them...definitely something most musicians stive for. Nice work!

ahh, what a lovely day
i have a song, recently redone, and actually finished this time. (i posted it about 2 months ago or so.)

it is here the link for it is at the top of the news section.

it is supposed to be kinda spaced out, hence the reverb, but it has a nice little surprise transition in the last verse
this is my first work that is piano driven btw.

Nice track. I enjoyed the vocals. Is that the NTK?
One thing I thought was that the heavy drums got a bit too much by about half way through the track.
Only personal taste though
Well done

Well done

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">yeh i just redid it with the NTK.
Yeh that transisiton was just something I was trying out. I was wanting to go from spacey, trance-like, to a full out rock song.

technically speaking though, how was that transition? volumes?
If you could tell, the tempo sped up also. obvisouly PT doesn't have en retarde tempo maps, so I just made it change on the spot right at that drum fill.

anyway

Ok Roy,
THAT TRACK IS AWESOME !
I'm not into instrumentals usually, but you got me with this one. When the first high solo starts, for a fraction of a second that very first high guitar note sounded like a vocal... you make that geetar talk, man.

This one is making my monthly "CD for the car", and it is roaring in the living room here in Brussels, and I'm getting stupid looks from the wife and daughter as I'm groovin' to the Mud Cat Blues...

Made my day.

Ahh, just took a listen to the Mud Cat myself..

Roy you continue to impress me with every song that I hear. Easily one of the best, if not the best slide guitarists I have heard. And yes, you definately know how to make that guitar sing man!! hehe.

Good show. tommy likee!

Am I done?

I am working on my first "real" recording for my band, have one song (out of 9...this could be a while) almost done....I think. It's going to be real tough to say that I am done. Anyways, was hoping for some critiques/opinions on this track.

http://www.elffarmraffle.com

If anyone gets a chance, would love some help.

Regards,

J

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

sologigolos/J,
The song sounds very good. For the mix, the only thing that I would suggest, is the long guitar chords are overdone just a bit as the song progresses. I just suggest they either be replaced with say, an organ, or gone, to keep the music interesting during the vocal/verses. The punchy acoustics(?) are good in the 'verses'...as a matter of fact, sounds like you have plenty of good stuff to work with.
I think this is a very good song, and effort. And I hope you don't mind my suggestions. I think it can be a strong song. Good job, definitely, so far... thanks for letting us listen... ~Roy
