I don't get "Save Target As" as an option...I just get the Open, copy, paste, delete menu...
Hmmm
then when I choose "open"...it goes into "Website found waiting for reply" mode and nothing happens.

neatguys,
Finally heard it. Great stuff!! Very pretty melody line and the guitar is well played.
Sounds like a great instrumental album cut...could hear it strategically placed between two album cuts, sort of a Zeppelin "Bron-Yr-Aur" type thing.
I really liked it!

More proof that the better the tune is, the better the production sounds automatically!!

Ok Dr John awesome!!I love the swirlyness ,the smooth vocals,PROduction.
Did you do the vocals at someones house?
It doesnt sound like it.Great job on the mixing!

Dr.John 12-29-2002 07:27 PM

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Hey Neatguy,

Oh yeah, the vocals were done at home, with all the rest of it. You wouldn't believe it, in the corner, under a wool blanket supported by mic stands to kill the ambience....

Long live home recording and the 001!

Thanks for listening...I was beginning to think nobody loved me...

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Hey Dr. John,
neatguys stole my word ..."swirlyness". I thought I was going to be original using that word. So, I'll have to think of another one.
Hmmmmm
How about "inter-twining" ?? vocals.

I really like the song and I'm very envious of many of you who can come up with a vocal part that is something "wholly other" than the music. I'm sitting here with a pile of great instrumental parts and I can't write a decent vocal melody or a lyric to save my life! And I'm a singer!!

The whole mix was a pleasure to listen to. The vocal sound is one of very smooth, cut-midrange quality. I like that. It's easy to listen to.
And the fact that you "deadened" the room noise is important when you have multi-layered vocals. Makes it much easier to place them in the mix!
Nice work. You guys have a slick style!

Keep it up!

Murph

Dr. John,
Sounds great! Like Murph, I'm reminded of Yes a bit, in the best sense. Some of the effects you use on the vocals are fascinating. I love the timing, it's just so different, but still flows so well. Your songs are always unique, it's a pleasure to listen. Thanks, and please keep em coming... ~Roy

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Roy, Murph, DDP!

Thank you for taking the time to listen. The vocals were done on an AKG SolidTube, with a Behringer Magician in the insert loop of the mixer. The vocal effects are really quite simple, and I can really recommend them to anybody who wants to go for this sound. Vocals were run through an AutoTune (I can run 4 AutoTunes at once using a guide track of the rest of the main session in a subsession) which was set for very subtle correction, mixed for levels and panning and bounced to disk in stereo to be reimported into the main session. Then just 2 AUX trax (one for background vocals, one for lead), both with delays (medium slap for lead, 400ms SuperTap on the backgrounds)and an Enigma for lead and a MondoMod for backgrounds. I don't use reverb on vocals any more at all. Adjusting the AUX sends of each track (sometimes with automation), you can get the spatial seperation you need to keep everything from sounding all piled up. I tried to keep the backgrounds bright.

The riff at the beginning is actually guitar, using an Auto-Wah envelope follower. The only synth lines are the bells, the string pad and a standard GM banjo. The rest is guitar. The drums are from an old Roland PMA-5, set for a TR-808 sound. Some odd percussion effects were added to fill some spaces.

I really liked the meter changes from 5/4 to 6/8, it kinda grabs you without being too odd.

Mastering was done with C4, Q10 and Maxim.

I am very impressed with all the stuff I have heard today. Especially how clear and up-front the mixes are. I just can't seem to get that. I always run out of headroom and have to turn things down. The mix looses that "in-your-face" feel that has become so popular. I think we have just too much stuff going on. Maybe I need an HD system (dream on!).

Thanks again!

Dr.John

Thanks DDP!
I wish it was one of those guitars
(martin, taylor, leravee.)
It is a fender 200.00 kit guitar that I am borrowing.Great action and playability though.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Roy,
I love She Wild!I'm trying to figure out how you did the backwards stuff at the beginning and the middle sections.Did you bounce to tape and flip the reel and sync up.Also the attack on the organ is that done throuh the fader in automation.Or is that automation on an effect. It's a cool sound.needless to say as always your drum tracks blow me away completely. Are those drums all samples.I thought yo mentioned once having a Roland for drums.Anyway another great tune Roy.Happy New Year Stu

Hey Roy I listened to almost all your stuff and wow!You are awesome. At playing, writing and mixing!Smooth brilliant ideas.
Have you ever listened to these cds?
Steve Tibbets "YR"
Jean luc ponty's "Enigmatic Ocean"

Hi there Roy

I'd have to add my hearty agreement with neatguys. I spent yesterday at work downloading your mp3s and giving them the high rotation. Hey!! I work IT support and there hasn't been much happening over the Christmas/New Years break.

I found your guitar work inspirational and soooooo very tasty. What's your setup if you don't mind me being so bold.

I particularly enjoyed summergirls.

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Thanks you guys so much. I appreciate your kind comments so much...

Stu,
The 'backwards stuff' is mostly Strat sounds created with the reverse plugin. I did indeed use automation on the organ parts for panning and volume, and for the percussion, I used all samples I've collected. (thanks, Stu)
~
neatguys,
Thanks so much... I would love to hear some Steve Tibbet (because I haven't), and I'm sure I've heard Jean luc Ponty, but not sure what. I'll try to find some of it though...
~
Scoobster,
I really appreciate your kind words... My setup is simple. For guitar, I either mike one of 2 Fender amps, or I play through an RP2000 guitar processer(Digitech). I have a custom built, kindof Strat/Les Paul hybrid guitar, and just got a new Strat as well (which I'll be using on my new stuff). (Thanks again... )

Thanks very much, Roy

Hey DDP... sheesh, I love it... 'It's my mind you'll drain' is a fantastic piece, man. I admire your style, I really do. It always makes me happy, and that's gotta be a good thang... One of these days, if you'll let me, I'de love to play a little slide on something of yours. But what I'm hearing sounds perfect for it anyway. Just keep it up, man... Thanks, Roy

DDP 01-02-2003 01:48 AM

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

hey roy, that'd be great havin' you play some slide on a tune- i'd be honored. god knows i'm no slide player! usually i leave the slide playing to a friend of mine but he's been busy with a new baby so i just did it myself. i think the simpleness of the slide added to the songs "hicness".
i'm definitly gonna hold you to your offer!

thanks for listening

ok, in an attempt to get a song up on the DUC and to get Capt. Pants to stop yelling at me i made a little tune yesterday and i am deciding to post it.

i seem to be having some troubles with the mixdown (all the levles are wacky in my headphones) so please excuse the low volumes (you'll probably have to turn it up)

Click Here and then click on "the girl of my dreams" oh yea, i know the vox suck cause i sang so dont turn it to loud
