to drumkid...... your song 3 lacks virtual environment.... when i first heard it it sounds like i'm in a 5x5m store room... no offense ok? try to think of a good environment. and add more body and top end to the vocals. goodluck!!!!

Some new ones

All,
So the latest project came back from mastering up in New York at Jigsaw Sound. The first two songs on my Myspace page below are the new ones. Turned out great for the most part. They are very happy with them so I am happy. The third song is a re-vamped version of a song written for me from a client who was ticked at my past years divorce chaos. Too funny and makes me laugh each time I hear it.

Mastered at jigsaw sound by NATHAN JAMES

Check them out below on my Myspace. The first 3 are the new ones.

More to follow later..

Thanks,
Doc

Here is the updated version of Stay I said I'd post. Thanks to Roger and Naagzh for the comments. Very helpful. I'm wrestling with the guitars a little. They were Pod'd (with some real crappy tones) and I don't have any clean tracks to reamp. Ohh well, thanks for listening.

Stay 8/10

Hey Roger, I really like the Song and the Guitar Sounds, the Riff, and all hte cool FX!
sound good!
i just think the Drums sound a little too "programmed", but that is fine... that will just change if you have a drummer playing it, so this is not a point here, I think!

is there more stuff like that?

Cheers, Andi

Hey Andi, Thank you very much for the words.
You're right about the drums. I had too many limitations to make it even sound decent. i programaed it all with reason and tewaked the samples... You can only do so much with Redrum.
I will redo the drums with a newer drums simulator plugin. It's hard to find a good drumer!!! Also, its good to add that i did this in 2004....

I have another song i was recording, and i did the drums using Kontact and DFFH. Let me know what you think about this one.

OK, I been reading this forum for over 2 years and I am finally ready to post.
http://www.myspace.com/dfreshstudio
I recorded a guys demo last month. I have a 002R, Music Production toolkit (beat detective & sound replacer!), IK CSR reverb plugins, Reason, MXL V69, Rode NTK, Earthworks QTC1, D112, SM 57, 3 Sennheiser 604's, Rode NT5's. I go into PT through a Yamaha 01V mixer.

Any help on production/mixing is greatly appreciated.

Jonathan,
I like your music. You have great range in your voice. Can you tell me a little bit about your drum sound? I really like your snare.
Keep it up!

Hi!

I have recorded a song using my trusy old 001 for a project that has so far received some fantastic feedback, however I need some feedback on the song, the recording, the lyrics, the structure etc. I would really really appreciate it if you could take the time (4mins) to listen to it and let me know what you think.

It's called Roller Coaster and is available to listen to on MySpace - you can click on the link below!

My Space - Jonathan Haselden

I know lots of people are asking for people to listen to their tunes, but I would really appreciate you listening to it and telling me exactly what you think. You can email me if you want with feedback:

Thanks so much.

Nice scoring Roy! Reminds me a bit of Danny Elfman.
What orchestra sounds do you use?

PS> what if the very last note would have been a low, unison, pizzicato note? Just a thought.

Sweet!

Hi Doug Farrar.. sounds pretty good.. production-wise I like what you've done...

otherwise the drums sound (esp. snare) sound a bit thumpy/muddy.. it doesn't have any crack/sizzle to it.. i would try and find the snare in the overheads and emphasize it a touch with EQ... sounds like what i'm hearing is mostly a sm-57 on the snare..

the vocals sound to be a bit stale also... try putting a very short stereo delay on the voc. track (about 10-20ms) and mix it in at about 15-20%.. it will give a bit of air/ambience to it..

i like the snare rolls into the heavier parts.. any tricks on how you did that? i know i hear it all the time, and there must be some trick to it, but every time i've tried to do it, it takes me about a half hour in Reason to create each individual note, and set the velocity for each one...

The voice and the production style remind me of David Crowder..

If you have a chance, check out my latest project at http://myspace.com/saidsower or http://www.saidsower.com ... the production isn't nearly as Poppy as what you have there.. more on the indie side i suppose... but you might like it.. i do!

Hi.

My ears are tired and I can't tell the difference between mixes anymore. Can anyone throw me some ideas for tidying this up please?

It is my first post here but don't hold back. I can take it.

Thanks for your time and interest.

p.s. this is in mp3 format which I find a bit frustrating. I find I have to "compensate" in the mixing process for it. Anyway...

WHY? That makes no sense? Rip it higher than 96 and rip it at 320. High bandwidth these days man. Why are you compensating for a MP3 format at all. Heck, that is a norm with kids who like to ride their bikes down streets with Ipods on, but jesus do your music right and mix for you and your clients ears. MP3 should be the LAST format you should be worried about. Let the kids rip it to MP3 and destroy your mix.

Doug.....I used a combo of ViennaStringOrchestra, Miloslav orchestra, and STII for that....and yes, a low pizzicato note on the end might've been cool.

Re: Latest Stuff...

Hey guys!

I posted some link somewhere in this thread way way back, and now I've got a newly completed song. 2 things to note, 1 is that I'm aware that a scream in the bridge needs to be turned down (and I shall do so later today, and this may be updated by the time you listen...) and the other thing is I'm also aware there's a little off-timing in the final chorus, which kinda sounded alright to me (but may be fixed too).

What I'm really happy about is that this is my best Mixing job, as well as my personal new favourite song I've made solo, and I was hoping that someone, anyone, could let me know what they think.

Top Of The Hill

Compared to my past work, I notice improvements, myself. If you can find the old stuff, feel free to compare. Otherwise, just please comment about this mix on it's own.

Thanks

Update: I just posted this and quickly made the changes I said I would above.

ok ive been recording in pro tools for about 2 years now using 002r. i have done a few short courses in the engineering side of it and i did pro tools course 101. i iwll continue it but jsut dont have to time right now.

anyways im ready to post some of my stuff that ive been doing over the few years.

AiM Studios

the songs signify and war were done just recently for their demo, i used mainly 57mics and beta57 for kick and rode nt5s for overheads, i used 57s to mic up guitar amps and i used the bass mic and di for bass tracks.
i used a behringer 32ch 8bus mixing desk for the drums and the overheads i used m-audio octane. i didnt eq it at all on the mixer. it was all done in PT

vocals funny enough i used a behringer B1 pro, not the best thing but i couldnt get my hands on anything else at the time. i really like how those two songs came out mainly because we only recorded mixed and mastered them all in about 2weekends worth

the other songs throttle and our story were done late last year, this was some demos done which was my 1st reall recording/mixing sessions in PT.

Please let me know what you think either adding me to myspace or on this forum or sending me a private message..

Cheers
Matt

Re: Mac Mixes!!!!!!!!

Hey All... first post here and a brand new pro tools user. I just recently upgraded from a Roland 1680... to PT 7... so I got a lot of learning to do. I would like your opinions on a couple of mixes here. These songs were tracked on my 1680, then brought over to protolols for mixing and such. I wouldn't call these done, but i would like some feedback before I continue.

Here they are...

2 Songs

They are both meant to be kinda raw and such...

Blindfold turned out more country than I anticipated.. mostly due to the bass.. I think.

Behind the Blinds is a super rough song. All tracks were first takes w/ out us really knowing the song.. so it's meant to sound a bit sloppy and what not. VERY minimal micing on the drums. Sloppy drums, slop guitars etc, needs some editing, etc.. The bass drum needs more presence.. and some other stuff.. well, that's why I am posting these songs.. I could use some feedback

Opinions are welcomed.. please

I'm pretty close to finishing my first recording using protools. I would very much appreciate someone telling me what they think, and also giving some mixing/mastering advice. I just can't seem to get it quite right. My biggest concern is that it is just not loud enough, but with the master fader almost peaking during the bounce, I don't know how to get it any louder. Anyway, thank you for listening and helping me get it together.

xnorfin.....good job on the guitars...nice and tight...the drums should come up overall, imo...and I suggest a 'breakdown' part say about 2/3 of the way through, for dynamics' sake, so the main drive part can kick back in and kill til the end.

Good job overall.

have two new records due out in Oct. titled Dollar Store Squirt gun (electronica), and Acoustic Uncut Vol.1 (unplugged acoustic raw guitar, non-mixed/mastered and recorded with a single microphone), both of which are available for full download for a limited time only in mp3 format on my site. Please visit my site and give them a listen when you get a chance. If you only have a short amount of time, I would highly suggest Acoustic Uncut Vol. 1. Any feedback would be appreciated. Tracks from the disc "From Misery Comes Darkness" were recorded at Trillium Lane Studios (Trilliums Lane Labs) a few years ago on a PT set up. Not sure which one....I wasn't paying attention!!!

Compare to the "This Blood Bestowed" track which was a different studio but also PT.
